Our New Salon… Love Kelly x

News 2 Comments

It was just 2 and a half years ago, in early 2009 that after having worked in salons both in Lincolnshire and in Penzance, I made the decision, then just 22, to take the step into the world of business and start my salon.

Having experienced first hand being a manager, and a stylist, in some larger salons, I realised that so many salons were missing the touch of a qualified and experienced hair stylist in the running of the business, and often this meant that clients weren’t given the service that they should have been. Because of this, even at the very beginnings of Kelly Anza Hair Design, my plan was to create a comfortable, cosy atmosphere for clients to relax in, and still get the exceptional service and professional hair styling they deserve.

From viewing the premises on Parade Street, Penzance, to opening the doors to my first clients, it took no more than 4 weeks to completely revamp, style and decorate our tiny building space into a cosy, yet luxurious salon. I have to thank my team, family and friends for helping make that possible! Of course, opening in such a short space of time was a risk, as it meant us all giving up work for a couple of weeks and putting our all into the salon, but luckily it paid off and I don’t think any of us have looked back since.

My team of 4 soon grew into a wonderful team of 6, and the salon started to feel a bit too close for comfort. We soon realised that to cope with the overwhelming success of the salon, we were going to need more space – any guests will know how little room to manouvre there is – and so after just 6 months of business we extended onto the second floor of our salon.

And things haven’t slowed down since – under 2 years after expanding the salon, I realised that, thanks to the unrelenting, and quite honestly overwhelming support of our loyal clients, friends and family, the team (which now consist of 5 stylists, 2 juniors and 1 assistant) the business had well and truly outgrown our building. I don’t think any of us realised when we opened that the salon would be such a success – opening a new business in the middle of the recession was a risk, but thanks to a lot of hard work, we’ve not only made a small business work, but we’re having to move to larger premises to keep up with demand.

So my dream come true of opening my own salon has taken a massive jump, and at the age of just 24, I will be lucky enough to be opening my own salon on the main High Street in Penzance. When I first saw the building, I could see how the space could be used as a salon straight away, and I knew it was the place for us – but not without some very, very hard work. Since viewing the space just 2 months ago, the entire ground floor of the new Kelly Anza Hair Design has been entirely refurbished.

Between working late nights to see to clients and train our assistants, I’ve also been frequenting local auctions to source out vintage furnishings and helping out redesign the building – it’s every stylist’s dream to open their own salon, but to completely design their own and put their own stamp on their local High Street, that’s just unbelievable. Still avoiding the clinical, cold look of many high-end salons, we have kept the comfortable, unique, vintage-inspired look we’ve come to be known for, complete with beautiful vintage furniture, like our gorgeous seat in reception, which was originally made in the 1700s – it’s inspired the entire room!

We will be closing our Parade Street premises on the 5th November, and are reopening on Thursday 10th November in our new salon, in 29 Market Jew Street, right next to the Victorian Tea Rooms!

Without our amazing clients, friends and families, none of this would be possible, and we can’t wait to show you what you’ve helped us achieve. And to thank everyone, the team would love to invite all of our clients, past, present and future to the Kelly Anza Hair Design Launch Party on Saturday 12th November, where you will be treated to a tour of the new salon, a glass (or two) of champagne and a few Paul Mitchell goodies too!

If you’d like to make an appointment with a member of the team, or would like to learn more, phone the salon on 01736 361 878, or pop in and visit us!

Wrap up, Keep Cosy, Stay Soft and Stylish…

How-To No Comments

After every summer, we can almost hear a sigh of relief from our hair, after the salty sea has dried it out, the sun has bleached the colour out, and we’ve heat-styled it to death (usually trying to curl it into ‘natural beachy waves’). Infact, right now our hair hates us. Our highlights are brittle and our colour is faded. Time for some serious TLC before those harsh winter storms come in…

By the time September sets in, your hair’s been through the hair damaging hell that it summer, so it’s time to give it a really good pamper! Book in with your chosen stylist for a cut, and if you usually have your hair coloured make sure you book in to have that freshened up too. When you phone up to make your appointment, ask to have it upgraded to include a Wash House Experiance. This is a series of luxurious salon-exclusive hair treatments, deep cleansing shampoos and head massages that will remove any product build up or chlorine from the hair’s cuticles, and inject your hair with protein, load it with moisture and give it a dazzling shine! This is just an extra £15 onto your total bill and includes a  Paul Mitchell Take Home Kit, which we will pick out specially for your hair’s needs.

By getting these treatments and a cut and colour, your hair is a fresh canvas before the winter – think of it as a spring clean, you remove everything that you don’t want, and clean and freshen it all up so it looks healthy and shiny until your next appointment! A good cut will take away all those dead ends, and will stop any split-ends in their tracks before they get worse – what’s not to love?

Those of us that are lucky enough to live in Cornwall know that whilst summers aren’t always rainy, winters are. Wind, rain, and cold weather are typical of winter all over the UK, and sadly aren’t our hair’s best friends. Whether it’s the hot, dry heat of central heating, the bitter cold of the outside, hats causing havic with our styles, or rain washing them out, we all have hair issues throughout winter. So before you grab your winter coat, check out our quick guide to winter hair care…

Winter Weather Hair Problems!

Rain ~ As soon as you’ve finished blowdrying your hair into tousled, waved, full volumed perfection, it’s always there to rain on your parade (excuse the pun). Damp, wet, rainy weather is our basolute worst nightmare, and somehow there’s no avoiding it, hat’s will give us hat hair (see below), umbrellas will no doubt blow upside down, we just don’t know what to do… However, there is one solution. Structured up-dos are perfect in rainy weather, and will hold their own against the elements. This winter, channel J-Lo with a high up mega-bun! After blow-drying your hair, smooth a little Foaming Pommade through hair. Foaming Pommade is a Hair Saviour this winter, and it holds the perfect balance between wax and serum, giving hair a gorgeous soft sheen but giving it flexible hold and texture too – what’s not to love? Once you’ve done this, smooth hair back into a high-as-you-can ponytail, and secure with a band. Next, use your Wonderbrush to backcomb the length of the ponytail and get some texture into the hair, and then wrap this hair around the band and secure with plenty of grips. Generously spray hair with some Extra Body Finishing Spray and your have a sleek, stylish, fun up-do that rain can’t touch!

Wind ~ Curly haired ladies will know why wind causes such a hair problem to their locks – whilst straight haired lovelie’s hair might just get blown about in blustery weather, even the most defined, soft, conditioned curls will blow into an uncontrollable mess in a bit of a breeze – but not to fear! Our Style Capsule Wardrobe is here to help! After washing and conditioning hair, smooth some Super Skinny Serum through hair, as this will help smooth strands down and stop them from becoming too flyaway. Dry hair as usual (we recommend twisting your hair up into lots of skinny twists and then diffusing until mostly dry) and then the secret trick? Lashings of Paul Mitchell’s Freeze and Shine. This pump hairspray will admittedly make your hair feel stiff and sticky, but it will also give it tremendous hold and a gorgeous gleam of shine, and should stop those curls from separating too much and frizzing out!

Hat Hair ~ The ultimate winter accessory… Until you have to take it off. Hats come with so many hair issues, they leave us all in a state – but don’t despair! We have a few hints and tricks to stop them ruining your day.

      • Choose your hat carefully. If the band around your head feels a little tight, it is almosr definately too tight, and you need to pick a bigger size. Not only does a tight hat create unsightly forehead lines (we’ve all seen them), but it also will slow circulation to the scalp and could slow hairgrowth!
      • Hats keep the head warm which is great in cold weather, but not so great for those of us prone to greasy roots!  To help prevent them, usse conditioner only on the ends of hair, avoid using very hot water whilst washing hair, don’t brush or scrub the scalp too much whilst washing or styling, and try to use a shampoo designed to give volume to limp hair. If lank roots are still giving your grief, try using a spritz of Batiste Dry Shampoo – it’ll mop up grease in no time!
      • If your hat’s quashing your volume, keep a Wonderbrush in your handback for a quick nifty backcomb whenever you need to top up on volume!
      • Still not loving this seasons hats? Go for a sleek faux-fur headband, which will keep your fringe smooth, your ears cosy and your locks out of your eyes!

Temperature Trauma ~ Central heating, chilly air, heat styling – all of this can cause massive trauma to your hair this winter, so act quick! Once a week, use a deep conditioning treatment through the ends of your hair – we recommend using Super Charged Moistueriser (however if you’re not sure, pop in for a product consultation with a member of our team in salon) to boost shine and condition in hair in just 5 minutes! Just smooth on to freshly washed locks, leave on for 5 Minutes or more (try wrapping in a hot, damp towel for ultimate cuticle penetration!) and then rinse thoroughly, finishing with your usual conditioner. This will give your hair a boost! Then, before drying, give hair a good spritz of with Heat Seal or Seal and Shine. These products are some of the most effective heat protection products on the market, and will create an invisible barrier on hair against the elements. Lastly, just be kind to your hair. Excessive straightening, curling, colouring and blowdrying will make hair feel much dryer than usual, so avoid over washing, always use conditioner, and if you have long hair try using a leave-in conditioner (The Conditioner is great) or a serum on the ends of hair to provide extra protection!

The Winter Style Wardrobe

Super Charged Moisteriser ~ This will give hair a surge of much needed moisture whenever needed, simply smooth onto hair after shampooing, and then wrap into a hot, damp towel and leave for at least 5 minutes – we like to put it on and then sit on the sofa and watch the soaps with a glass of wine! – and rinse thoroughly. Instantly refreshed hair!

Foaming Pommade ~ A wonder product! This nifty little thing works as a serum, and a wax. It had enough hold to give hair texture and protection against the elements, but it’s also gorgeously smoothing and gives it plenty of shine! Hair perfection.

Heat Seal/Seal and Shine ~ Whether you straighten your hair everyday, or just quickly blast it off and go, these will give the best thermal protection! They create a completely invisible barrier on hair which will stop heat affecting it at all, whether it’s GHDs or just central heating, they’re all damaging, and these will totally stop it!

Freeze and Shine ~ This is the best hairspray we sell, in our opinion anyway! It give’s amazing hold, and gives hair a flawless sheen! It’s perfect for updos, for curly hair, for anything! Great protection from the elements.

Straight Works ~ This is the ultimate smoothing blowdrying lotion, which will smooth even the thickest, wildest hair, and is heavy enough to make it stay smooth all day long. Shiny, soft, gorgeous!.

Fashion from Out of this World…

The nights are beginning to draw in, the weather’s getting colder and finally, winter fashion is on our minds, and this year one of our absolute favourite trends are all thing Intergalactic, and we aren’t talking about Star Trek…

How far into space will you go?

If you’d rather keep your head well below the clouds, there are loads of subtle ways to work the Milky Way into your beauty Routine..

When you think space, the instant thoughts are blacks, navy blues, deep purples and silvery whites, and there is no better wintery look than a rich, navy blue smoky eye. Enhance the shape of your eye with a silvery shadow on the inner corners, and don’t forget that Urban Decays Heavy Metal Liquid glitter liners are the ultimate in space-age glam! Ronnie at BowsAndCurtseys.blogspot.com recently did this amazing Nebula Inspired Make Up look, which uses brighter colours inspired by some absolutely incredibla photos of nebulas! Smokey, sexy, but still bright ~ check out what she used and more photos on her blog here.

Another great way of sneaking this look into an outfit without making too much of a statement is a Galaxy Themed manicure! You could just add a hint of outer space into your look with deep purple nails with silver cresent moons, or you could follow this wonderful tutorial from the girls at Lipgloss&Black (we featured their gorgeous Halloween playsuit last year here) using a few different polishes, a foundation sponger, and a toothpick! This look is seriously gorgeous, and could be customised to include colours, shades and finishes of your choice! We finished ours with a slightly glittery topcoat for a more party perfect look!

If you like to keep your feet on Planet Earth, perhaps give your footwear a speedy style update with these gorgeous shoes…

A good pair of shoes can make or break an outfit, and if you want to be ahead in the the style stakes, a pair of Jeffrey Campbell Litas are  the go to shoe for fashionistas and bloggers all over the planet. The block wooden heel makes them the perfect shoe for evening, but the large platform means that the foot only sits at a roughly 2.5inch heel height, so they’re great for wearing to work, college or a day shopping! They come in a massive range of colours, textures (brocade? velvet? glitter!?), and designs, however our favourite are these galaxy print beautys, which we think would look perfect paired with a pair of skin tight jeans and an oversized vest! Buy them directly from Jeffrey Campbell Shoes!

If you’re not so sure about the steep heel (or the price tag) on a pair of JC Litas, why not go for something a little more casual? Vans have created a gorgeous Space & Time themed version of their Authentic shoe (our go-to pump for comfy weekend walks!) which is not only gorgeous, comfortable and stylish, but is also just £39.99 here!

Already have a pair of shoes that you love? Why don’t you have a go at creating your own galaxy themed kicks with this nifty tutorial? All you need is some acrylic paint, a small paintbrush, and a lot of imagination! We like the idea of matching ours to our nails!

Go all the way…

Make the universe the main attraction in your outfit with one of these gorgeous statement pieces… Pair with black for a cool rock chick look, or white for a  sweet summer style…

Australian Brand Black Milk Clothing were one of the first to cotton on to the space-age trend, and now create leggings, swimming costumes, dresses, bodysuits and tops all with different variations of their galaxy print on. We love this pinky-toned pair of leggings!

The girls over at Lipgloss and Black have put these lovely DIY shorts onto their etsy account – combine studs and galaxy print on a pair of cut-off denims for the ultimate punk rock take on this look!

This gorgeous cocktail dress from Lipsy is a great elegant way to work the galaxy look in a girly way, just team with a pair of nude heels and a stunning pair of earrings and it’s a perfect look for a night with the girls for cocktails!

Top off the look with some Starry Accessories (click the images to buy them)……

Who needs Ibiza?! So the weather in Penzance might not be quite that good, but just in case these few Jubilee Sessions Essentials will help you survive, rain or shine…

Rain…

If we’re unlucky enough to have rain on any of the Jubilee Sessions (touch wood!) then we’ve comprised a small selection of absolute essentials to help you stay dry (unless you decide to brave the pool regardless)…

  • Umbrella ~ An absolute essential if the clouds decide to break, the trusty umbrella can keep your mascara from running and your hair from frizzing. New Look have some gorgeous frilly floral ones, perfect for that chic, feminine look.
  • Rain Mac ~ There are hundreds of stylish, quirky, lightweight macs in the shops – Topshop have some gorgeous red patent ones at the moment, or go for a Barbour for a bit of extra luxurious warmth. Very Alexa Chung
  • Boots ~ If you’re not going to be braving the pool if the weather turns chilly, a good pair of boots will be your saving grace! Uggs will be a total no-no around the pool, but a pair of wellies or Doc Martens will be comfortable, rain proof, and total grunge chic!

Sunshine…

When the sun shines, everything seems better, but don’t forget these few essentials to make things a bit more bearable…

  • Cosy Cardigan ~ When the sun goes down, it can get a little chilly, so grab a nice chunky knit cardi to keep warm in style. Pair with mini shorts for a sexy, pretty look…
  • Pretty Bikini ~ A gorgeous, look-at-me bikini will turn heads across the pool for all the right reasons. Whether it’s a sexy little black number or a frilly floral fancy, this is a staple for the summer, and definately a must for the coolest pool party this summer!
  • Flip Flops ~ Whether it’s a pair of tough, leather gladiators or a pretty pair of tribal, beaded flip flops, a light pair of comfortable, cool sandals will be an absolute essential. Team with on-trend turquoise nails for a brilliant injection of colour!
  • Sunnies ~ Watch the sun go down in style with a pair of high-fashion, quirky sunglasses – we’re absolutely loving all the retro, cat eye styles that are in at the moment, perfect to compliment a 50s style bikini!

Transform your look like Katy Perry!

How-To No Comments

Since Miss Perry burst onto our radios, iPods and TV screens in 2008 with ‘I Kissed a Girl’, we loved her quirky girly style, hardened up by her signature ebony hue. However, despite always having had black hair, we know that’s not her natural colour, no matter how well she fakes it! Here’s how to work her style, whatever your colour…

Black Hair

To keep your dyed black hair looking fabulous can be quite an upkeep, especially for fair haired ladies!  Between keeping your hair in good condition and those roots at bay, you can be in for quite a hard slog, so here’s a few tips to keep your dark coloured hair fresh and beautiful…

  • Keep up with your regrowth appointments ~ depending on how fast your hair grows, you could be having to get your roots recoloured as often as every 3-4 weeks, however there are ways to make this more cost effective. Firstly, coloured dry shampoos are your best friend. They make them designed for dark hair and a generous spray down your parting will blend in roots between colours! When you do book in your regrowth, try booking it in with a trainee or a junior stylist to make your appointment a little more wallet friendly – our lovely trainee Sophie is avaiable for appointments every Tuesday, and regrowth prices start from £12 – bargain!
  • Treat your hair to keep it strong and soft ~ frequent colouring of hair can be drying and damaging, so keeping your hair in the best condition possible is always important. I know you’re probably thinking ‘My hair feels way better since I’ve been dying it dark!’ – but trust us, when you come to fancy a change (like Miss Perry), having strong, well moisterised hair in good condition will be your best friend. If you’re only having your roots coloured each appointment, that’s a great start, but keep up with your hair by applying a treatment (like Paul Mitchell’s Super Charged Moisteriser) once a week, and always protect it from heat when styling.
  • Make it suit your skin ~ we often have clients coming to us, desperate for a change because they don’t think their freshly coloured hair suits them – and if you’re a natural blonde who’s gone for a deep cocoa hue, then it won’t take to you so well, so make it suit you. If you like to wear a full face of make-up, start off with investing in a new foundtion or tinted moisteriser in a slightly warmer (not darker) colour. This will stop your skin looking too ashen! Follow this with a new bronzer and blush to really warm up your skintone, to ensure you look fresh and healthy. If your natural colour is dramatically different to your new dark hair, invest in a good quality eyebrow pencil or shadow – even if your hair’s black, go for dark brown as it’s more flattering. This will help your new ‘do look natural on your skin.

Auburn Locks

Katy’s gorgeous red tone looks to us as a result of lightening her hair, and is a great stepping stone on the way to blonde – you can actually see that her hair is a much deeper colour at the ends from years of dying it. Going from black to blonde is a long, steady process, and if you want to you will have to bear in mind that to get your hair to that colour and in good condition, it will take at least 3 colour appointments. This can sound like a lot of expense and upkeep, but once your locks are there, all you’ll probably have to do is pop in ever 6 weeks or so to get those roots freshened up and a toner.

Before you even start thinking about how to keep up with the blonde, you need to learn about the inbetween stages. It looks as though here Katy’s had either a colour removal process, or a series of gentle bleaching processes called bleachbathing. This will still dry out your hair, but it’s a good way to slowly start stripping the colour out of your hair, without it going bright orange! Once you’ve had this done and lightened your hair by a few shades, you can have a semi-pemanent colour put on to even the colour out before your next appointment. If your dark hair hasn’t got too much colour on, you might only need to do this once or twice before going in with highlight, however if your hair has more layers of dye or is particularly damaged, you might need more time between appointments.

If your hair is dark and you’re looking to start lightening it, the best thing to do is begin your colour-process at home. This doesn’t involve any colour, just shampooing it with either a dandruff or a no-tears formula baby shampoo (these kinds of shampoos gently strip out excess colour in the hair because of the PH balance) and then using plenty of nourishing treatments and conditioners to give your hair an extra boost of strength! If you’d like a consultation for either colour or just the products you need, either give us a ring and book in with the sylist of your choice or pop into us and we’ll do our best to help!

Blonde Bombshell

Since Katy Perry uploaded the blonde picture on July 4th to her Twitter, we’ve been absolutely dying to see a proper photo of her blonde. It looks as though she’s had some highlights put through and has now got a gorgeous, multi-tonal, caramel blonde. Doesn’t it suit her? If you’ve got to this stage, follow these quick tips to keep it look fabulous…

  • Meet your new best friend, Platinum Blonde Shampoo by Paul Mitchell is a gorgeous smelling, gentle shampoo that has a deep violet tone to it. This purple colour will counteract any pesky, unwanted, yellow tones in the hair and keep the colour looking fresh between colours!
  • Up the Ante on the Treatment front by investing in a bottle of Super Strong Liquid Treatment from Paul Mitchell. This leave in spray will strengthen hair upto 60% from the first use, and can be used every time you wash and dry your hair – just spritz through before you blow dry!
  • Visit the salon for regular toners, because whilst the purple shampoo is great, sometimes you need something a little more powerful – why not upgrade your appointment with a Wash House Experiance? A gorgeous treatment to pamper your hair and scalp which includes a take-home kit to continue that great feeling in your own bathroom!

So now you know everything you ever need to know about achieving Katy Perry’s Total Blonde Transformation!

If you’d like to book in for a consultation, treament or colour appointment, just give us a ring on 01736 361 878 or pop in to see us at 12 Parade Street – we look forward to seeing you!

The Guide to Love Riot Survival!

Fashion, How-To No Comments

If you live in Cornwall, there’s almost no way you haven’t heard of Love Riot. Producing the absolute best club nights in the entire of the South West (and probably the rest of the UK too), these evenings of music, ridiculous fancy dress and much, much too much alcohol are almost always a sell out, and we love them!

However, whilst us girly girls love letting out hair down (so to speak), we almost still forget all those little essentials that will make your Love Riot weekend a lot more pleasant…

The Checklist:

  •  Car/Van – not only are cars a great way to get to any Love Riot event, but they’re great to use as a giant handbag, a changing room and even a tent.
  • Sleeping Bag – because honestly, waking up freezing cold in a car at 6 am with a hangover is no fun.
  • 2l Bottle of Water
  • Painkillers – self explanatory.
  • 1 large can of glitter spray – endless Love Riot fun to be had with one of these!
  • Spare Pair of Shoes – going barefoot is not fun.
  • Torch
  • Face wipes – to make you look a little more presentable when you stagger home.

Now the car’s all packed up, let’s get thinking about your hair, make-up and outfit!

The Outfit

Whilst no one’s going to be looking at your outfit (too busy having a good time!), us girls like to look nice, but after many a Love Riot, we know that comfort is key! We love Motel dresses because they always make a statement, look cool and are flattering, but also they’re almost all made of jersey and are comfortable, cool and go with everything! We love this one (right) from MotelRocks.com for just £38! Team with some big earrings and a killer tan!

Accessories wise, stick to a small across-the-body back to keep a few essentials (the amount of phones we’ve lost..) in, and stick to flat shoes! We usually go for trusty gladiator sandals or pumps, but if it’s winter or you think you might be outside a bit more, wellies are always good!

The Hair

Hair needs to be dance-proof, sweat-proof, and generally party-proof, so we always say go for something that wasn’t particularly neat to begin with!

Try washing your hair with Paul Mitchell’s Lemon and Sage range of shampoo and conditioner, and then run some Extra Body Mousse througg from tips to end, and then scrunch dry or diffuse to get some body and natural waves and curls in those lengths. Using a curling tong or your GHDs to put a few extra curls in, and then use your Mighty or WonderBrush to get some serious volume in those roots! Next, tip your head upside down and spray a generous ammount of Freeze and Shine Spray through it, and then plait a few small sections around the front a grip back for a pretty partly look that won’t get in the way of your night!

The Make Up

Whilst there’s no need to got overboard on make-up (it’s just going to sweat off anyway), we still like to put a little bit of effort in! Stick to a tinted mousteriser and concealer, and pat some translucent powder over the top for long lasting coverage! Use bronzer across the forehead, down the briges of the nose and along the cheekbones to give you a sun kissed glow, and use a little bit of pinky blush on the cheekbones! Use waterproof mascara and eyeliner, and steer clear of too much eyeshadow, it’s just going to melt off! We like using a little bit of glitter gel eyeliner to make our eyes stand out a little. Finish off with a slick of pinky gloss and you are ready to go!

Check out Slut.co.uk for more information on future Love Riot nights and to buy tickets!

The ‘Lob’ (that’s Long Bob if you haven’t heard)!

How-To No Comments

It’s been drifting on the perimeter of the fashion crowd’s Next Big Hair Trend for a while, with occasional celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Palmero, sporting them for for quite some time, but the 70′s-esque Lob Trend has now hit, and suddenly it is the cut to have this spring!

What is The Lob?

It really is just a long bob, the same blunt cut style you would have at your jawline but taken down a few inches so that it sexily grazes your collar bones, and frames the face. It can be worn with or without layers, and is often complimented nicely with a full or sweepy fringe – wispy fringes are generally a no-no with The Lob, as they can look out of place with the blunt, definite lines of the rest of the cut.

Will my hair suit The Lob?

Yes! Most hair sits perfectly in The Lob, it just means customising the style to suit you. Have very fine hair? Go for a slightly longer, bluntly cut Lob with no layers, this will make your hair feel bulkier and thicker, and really show off that cut! Blessed with beautiful curls and waves? Ask your stylist for a very long inverted bob – this merely means that it’s cut slightly shorter at the back with layers that graduate from shorter at the back to long at the front. This will allow for your curls to bounce up and give your hair gorgeous body without becoming too triangular! It’s also a great way to freshen up longer hair and take all those worn-out, dead ends off it without losing all sense of style in it!

How do I style The Lob?

However you like! The lob looks gorgeous with a little bit of body and some waves, but dead straight to show off the cut looks gorgeous too – and you hair is atill long enough to experiment with up-do’s plaits and hair extensions! What more could you want?

Still need some convincing? Check out these celebs that have already gone for The Lob…

This spring it’s about not spending hours in the salon chair having hundreds of laborious highlights, or ultra glam blow-dries, or poker straightened, sleek smooth hair. Spring/Summer 2011 is about rolling out of bed and running straight to the beach, hair falling in natural waves and curls, it’s about tucking fresh flowers picked from the garden in your hair to give it some hippy-chic glam, and it’s about sunkissed, subtle, grown-out highlights.

Wash using a gentle shampoo like Shampoo One (it’s yummy, coconutty smell will make you feel summery before the sun’s even come out), and wash using a moisterising conditioner (if your hair’s particularly dry, go for something a little more intense like Paul Mitchell’s Instant Moisture Dail Treatment). Run a little Sculpting Foam through the ends (this is another summery-smelling product that’s just a soft, conditioning mousse) to give it some texture and then either leave to air dry, blast with a hairdryer or diffuse to encourage any natural wave in the hair. Get your hands in at the roots and mess it up to give it some lived in body, and if you go to the beach, embrace the salty water – it’s better than any salt-spray on the market to giving you surfy, sexy hair.

If you’re going out, why not add in a plait, maybe a basic or fishtail plait down your back if your hair’s long enough – make sure it’s not too neat, and to give it that ethereal, lived-in look, use the palms of your hands to rub the plait and the hair on your head to loosen the style and encourage a few flyaway strands – or if your hair is shorter, maybe just a little plait around the front to keep hair off the face, or as part of a quick, messy up-do. Tuck a few fresh flowers in (daisies and pink campion look gorgeous) and you are set for beach, bbq, afternoon in the beer garden, wedding, work… Wherever the spring breeze takes you.

Go for grown out, ombre tones in a combination of golden and ashy browns and blondes. It’s all about the boho-esque, last-year-I-backpacked-around-thailand-for-6-months look, even if you didn’t, you stayed in rainy Britain and you’re actually just going to have it faked at the salon!  Fancy spicing things up a bit? Go for pastel tones through the ends for a little injection on springtime colour…

Grow Out that Crop in Style!

How-To No Comments

Every season, a new model, celebrity or fashion icon walks out with a shocking, daring and always completely stunning new hair cut, and more often than not, the reason it’s so shocking is because it’s so short. From Agyness Deyn’s quirky, elfin crop, to Frankie Sandford’s a-symmetrical ‘do, there’s always a a super-short, daring cut in fashion. It’s fun, it’s easier to style than long hair and it makes a massive impact (hello Miss I’m-Newly-Single and I’ve had a make-over), so why not go for the chop? Many of our clients already have, and kept their new sexy, edgy cropped styles, and absolutely loved them.

However, it’s not always something you want to keep. You might love it when you get it done, but often the upkeep of short haircuts (they often need cutting more regularly) and the inability to style it in as many different ways as long hair can make you tire of your new, daring cut more quickly. And this isn’t a bad thing!

It’s natural to want to change your hair and it’s better that you tried it and didn’t get on than never tried it at all! Growing hair out can be a long and laborious process, but here’s a few tips and ideas to help you keep on your road to long hair, without giving in and cutting it all off again!

Regular Trims

It sounds mad to keep cutting your hair when it’s already short, but within reason it will help you in the long run. Every 6-8 weeks, go to your hairdressed and ask for an intensive conditioning treatment and a trim. Make sure you explain to your stylist that you’re trying to grow your hair out, and they’ll be able to give you other advice too! Often you’ll find a certain part of your hair grows faster than the rest, and on a lot of shorter styles and pixie crops, to get an even result the sides have a long way to grow to catch up with the back! To keep up with this, get the back trimmed short to the nape of the neck until the sides grow down to match, and then you can concentrate on maintaining a style, whether it’s a bob or a longer, more layered cropped style.

Carey Mulligan went for a chic bob whilst growing her pixie cut out.

Keep Healthy

It sounds obvious, but it’s so easy to forget that what you put in your body affects how it looks on the outside, and hair is no exception. Hair is made up of protein, so to keep your hair string and healthy, a protein rich diet is essential – but don’t forget your veggies too! Plenty of fruit and veg is not only good for your digestion and your overall health, but they contain essential vitamins and nutrients that is essential for healthy hair growth. Remember that a healthy diet will also give you a killer figure ready for summer! Lastly, drink plent of water, at least 1.5l a day – this will keep your hair soft, moisterised and healthy and your skin glowing, clear and smooth. What’s not to love about a healthy, delicious diet?

Experiment

It can be boring growing your hair out, especially because hair isn’t exactly a fast grower! To stop yourself growing bored and fed up and getting tempted to go for the (much unwanted) chop, why don’t you experiment with colours and textures? Semi Permanent colours are a great, less damaging way to change your look that permanent colours and enable you to try out many different tones and shades! If colouring isn’t your thing, grab some curlers, a pair of straighteners and some hairspray and experiment! Part your hair on a different side, backcomb it into a rockabilly quiff or curl it and give it some rock’n'roll volume! The world is your oyster, and the only limit is the length of your hair and your imagination. Go wild!

Accessorise!

Even if you follow all of our guidelines and rules, there will still be times where you’re stuck and an in-between, you’re hating your hair and you don’t know what to do – curb these bad hair days with a dose of fun, bright accessories! From cover-it-all-up beanie hats to prim-and-pretty alice bands, the right accessories will made your day go from bad to gorgeous in just a second! We love Topshop for stylish hairslides and Etsy.com for unique, wild and wonderful hats!

Spring 2011 Trends ~ Bold Colours!

Fashion No Comments

It may only be January, it may still be frost and cold, but Spring is right around the corner, and here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we’re counting down the days until the weather gets warmer, the trees get greener, and the days get longer!

Spring fashion is always fun, not only is it a breath of fresh air from the dark, dreary winter fashion but it’s a great chance to buy some gorgeous statement pieces and basics that will take you right through to Autumn. The catwalks for Spring/Summer 2011 had loads of wearable key trends, from 70s’ Glamour to Eclectic Chic, the trends for the upcoming season are fun, wearable and easy to combine with your own personal style!

Bold Colour!

It’s something that takes a little bit of confidence and an eye for colour to get just right. Whether it’s Colour Blocking or simply adding a dash of Bold in with your outfit with a brightly colour trench, Big, Bright, and Beautiful are what this trend is all about. Clash a few different shades or wear an entirely Vermillion outfit, stand out from the crowd and smile, it’s almost summer fater all!

The Skirt

Trousers aren’t anywhere to be seen on the catwalks in bold colour, no, instead it’s all about the Midi Skirt. It’s the Mini’s more demure friend and the Maxi’s cheeky little sister, and we love it for spring, and it works perfectly in a bold, brash colour – just make sure it sits high on your waist and reaches just below your knees for the most figure flattering, fashion friendly look.

2. Coral Skater Skirt, £34.99, RiverIsland.com

2. Blue Checked Shirt, £29.99, Zara.

3. Draped Red Body, £29.99, Zara

2. Mustard Ponte Shift Dress, £40, Topshop.com

American Dream Hair Extensions ~ Now at Kelly Anza Hair Design!

How-To, News 2 Comments

As many of you have probably realised by now, here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we are always on the search for the best quality hair extensions we can find. They’re a great way to change your look quickly and easily, without the stress, hair damage or bank-breaking expense of permanent, bonded extensions or permanent colour.

You’re probably thinking, well surely they’re all the same, but honestly every supplier and seller of clip-in extensions offers a totally different quality! From vibrant, tonal long lasting color to ensuring the hair is thick, healthy and still feels amazing after some heavy duty curling, hairspray and washing, and of course are bank-balance-friendly. We wanted to make sure any extensions we offered or recommended to our clients were perfect. And trust me, we’ve tried a lot.

Finally, we’ve found the best value and quality (in our opinion) on the market! American Dream Hair Extensions are 100% Natural Hair and come in over 80 different shades and colour combinations – from plaitnum blonde to bright blue to dip-dyed black and red, they have it all, enabling you to either change your colour or add natural length for as little at £22 a weft!

How much are they?

An 18″ weft of hair that’s 6 clips wide (that 12″ wide which can either be used in one piece to give length all over or can be cut into sections for hints of colour or length just where you want it) costs £22 (+ £4 postage on the total number of wefts). We recommend 3 of these for a full head of extensions to add length and volume so if you’re thinking about ordering a full set it’ll probably cost you around £70, but if you’re hair’s finer you could probably get away with wearing less and if you want hair with much more volume, buy an extra pack, it’s completely up to you.

How long do they last?

Clip-In Extensions will last for life, providing your care for them well. This means always using heat protection when styling, using plenty of intensive conditioning products and not washing them too often. For more information on caring for your extensions, take a look at our Extension Care Guide.

How can I ensure they’re the right colour?

Visit us in salon for a consultation where one of our stylists will be able to match your colour to one of over 80 different shades and tones to ensure they’re perfect for your colouring.

How can I use Extensions to change my colour?

Because American Dream Hair Extensions come in over 80 different shades, you can use them to add subtle lowlights to the underneath of your hair, add slices and chunks of bright, vivid colours, or use their Dip-Dye colours to fake a vibrant, dip-dyed look without damaging your own hair! Book in for a consultation with one of our stylists and see how you can get the colour you’ve always dreamed of with Extensions!

How long do they take to put in?

When you make your appointment to have your extensions cut in so they blend into your own hair, your stylist will take the time to teach you how to put them in yourself when you get home. Once they’ve done this, the first few tried it will take a little longer as you get used to the sectioning and where they are positioned, however once you’ve had some practice, putting in your extensions can take as little as 5 minutes! Quick and easy!

So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call on 01736 361 878 or pop into the salon today and book in for your free Extension Consultation!

Step-by-Step: Short Hair Updo!

How-To No Comments

Loads of hair styles and hair guides always focus on long hair, at least past shoulders usually. And how does that leave us short haired ladies feel? Well, pretty rubbish actually. Because we don’t want to always wear the same style, we want to be able to wear elegant up-dos and rock-chick quiffs, and preferably without the help of extensions. So this one’s for all the ladies with sleek, sophisticated bobs who want to rock a different look on the weekends!

What you need:

  • A Pair of Straighteners or a Curling Tong/Wand (the narrower the easier, but don’t worry if yours is wider!)
  • Sectioning Clips
  • Hair Grips – try and find these in a colour similar to your hair for a pro-look!
  • WonderBrush
  • Extra Body Finishing Spray – something with a seriously strong hold is needed for this look!

Before:

Our model for this look (the lovely Lilly) has a short graduated bob, which is cut right up to the hairline at the back. However, if your hair is longer or shorter, do not panic this look is great on a variety of different lengths and styles, and luckily for any hair-beginners out there, the key is to not be too neat. As always, this look is better on second day hair as it won’t be so slippy, but you have just washed it, use some mousse and styling product to give it a bit more hold.

1. Separate hair into two halves at the back, and clip it up out of the way leaving about an inch (that’s long enough to curl) loose. Don’t worry if the hair isn’t long enought to curl, we’ll get to that later! Using your GHDs/curler, take chunky sections and curl them. If they don’t look very neat or stick out a little, don’t panic. when you’ve curled the whole section, backcomb the roots and the curls to mess them up a little more and spray with hairspray. Continue this up the head to the crown.

2. Using the same technique of curling and backcombing, this time take sections on the side of the head. Try to curl slightly neater around the very front for a neater, sleeker look. Sometimes it’s easier to backcomb the roots first, and then curl, and always curl away from the face at the front for a more flattering look. Once all the hair is curled and backcombed, spray generously with a strong hold hairspray. Now your hair should be looking bit and wildly curly like the last photo below. If your hair was too short to curl like we perviously mentioned, just backcomb it and spray with some strong hold spray or wax to give it texture, and it should blend in with the curls – the most important part is getting loads of volume into it. Now you have the foundation for your up-do.

3. Take a deep, low side parting (this is best on the side you usually wear your parting if you wear it on the side, but take it a little further down) and use your WonderBrush to gently backcomb the roots. Take a 1-2 inch section at the front on the larger side of this deep parting, and use your WonderBrush to smooth it over and back, and secure with a grip. Continue taking similar sized sections, but instead of pulling them down, once you get past the ear pull them up to create the look of an ‘up-do’. If your gets shorter at the back, stop as far down as you can get, if not, keep taking sections until the centre of the hairline at the back of the head.

4. Once you’ve taken these sections, spray generously with hairsprayn and gently backcomb around the front and just have a play until it’s sitting how you like it. Use a strong hold hairspray (longer hair girlies go for Extra Body Finishing Spary and shorter hair should use something like Paul Mitchell’s Freeze and Shine for a spikier, more defined look) and you are ready to show of your gorgeous new up do!

Step-By-Step: The Beehive!

How-To No Comments

From the OTT retro style of Amy Winehouse to the vintage loveliness of Dusty Springfield, the beehive is a classic ‘do that never seem’s to go out of style. It’s height makes it glamourous but it’s completely adaptable, so don’t be afraid of going for the daytime-beehive, it can look sleek and smart as well as sexy and fun. There’s hundreds of products on the market right now, from ‘Instant Beehives’ to technical root-lift gadgets, but we’re here to show you that you don’t need anything expensive or techinical to get this kind of big hair, just a £1.95 WonderBrush and a spritz of hairspray!

What you need:

  • A pair of Straighteners or a Curler – this isn’t essenstial, but can help with smoothing out curly hair before you start or adding some curls at the end!
  • Sectioning Clips
  • Hair Grips – these are best in a colour that matches closely to your hair, but don’t worry too much!
  • Super Clean Light – whilst this is a great light hairspray, any will do, but finer haired girlies, go for a stronger hold!
  • Snag Free Bands – These aren’t essential but can help in sleeker styles, make sure they’re snag free to prevent breaking your hair!
  • The WonderBrush – it’s wonderful, to be quite frank.

Before:

Starting off with smooth, brushed hair is a must, but don’t worry about it being too clean, second day hair will often hold much better. If your hair is clean, use a generous amount of mousse or styling liquid before drying it,  as this will stop hair from being too slippy. If you have naturally curly hair, straighten it first but try to do this the day before too, so some of the natural movement is back in it and it’s not too poker staight, this too will help it stay up.

1. Separate hair in two halves, the top half should be take from around from ear to ear, however if you want your beehive to just be on the top of your head, take this section higher. Split this section into two halves vertically (like shown) and clip up out of the way. Take a small slice of hair in the middle of where it’s not slipped up, just a few millimetres thick and a couple of centimetres wide, and use your WonderBrush (a comb will do if you haven’t picked one up yet) to gently back comb the roots using small strokes from about 2 inches from the roots back to the roots, to form lots of knots in the hair. Repeat this on the sections either side.

2. Continue this up the head, taking small sections like the first on carrying on up into the two top sections. The trick to this is keep the sections small, spray slightly with hairspray after backcombing, and the bigger you want your beehive, the more vigourously you want to back comb (for example, if you only want a little big of height, only backcomb gently very close to the roots, but if you want a huge beehive, backcomb the hair from further down the hair and do it more). Continue this until all the hair in the top two sections has been backcombed, but leave out your fringe if you have one, and then gently use the WonderBrush to smooth the top layer out of the knots and brush it back.

3. You’ve now created the foundations for your beehive, and you probably look like you’ve just got fabulously big hair! But in the next step you can make it even higher, and get the perfect beehive shape. Using your WonderBrush, continue to smooth the top layer of hair out like before, but this time pull it into a pony-tail at the back of the head, but only using the backcombed hair, leave that bottom section out.  Once you’ve gathered it at the back, push the whole section up a little – this will give your beehive even more height – and then grip in the centre at the back. Most people should be able to just get away with using two grips in an X shape to hold, but thicker hair may need more.

You now have the basis for your beehive! You can leave it like this, but here’s a couple of fun ideas to make it look even better…

The Work Beehive

This is a great look for work, business meetings or even a sleek look to go with an dress in the evening. Simply pull the rest of the hair back into a smooth ponytail (use your WonderBrush) just below where you’ve secured the beehive. Tie it with a snag-free band as tight and close to the base as possible. To hide the band, take a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail and srap around the band, and then grip the ends underneath the ponytail with a kirby grip. Spray generously with hairspray!

The Glam Beehive

Quick and easy, glamourising your beehive is easier than it looks, simply curl the rest of your hair using either GHDs or a curling tong/wand, whilst backcombing the roots slightly to encourage body! Finish off with a generous spritz of hairspray and a gorgeous hair band or clip, and you have yourself perfect hair for a wedding, party, or prom. Gorgeous!

“I want to bleach my hair!”

How-To, News No Comments

So, you were blonde, and it was lovely. Your healthy, natural, golden locks were gorgeous and healthy and thick. They shone in the sun and they were your best friend. And then you decided to dye it dark. It washed you out, it faded really quick and the roots on your crown look like you’re gaining a bald spot… This, this is not the look you were going for. You need to get that colour back, you want to get rid of the colour on your hair…

So you decide that getting it bleached will be the best thing.

We get tonnes of girls coming in to the salon with this situation, and the first thing they ask is how much for a full head of bleach. The chances are, this bleaching isn’t going to give you the result you want. Firstly, due to how dye sticks (especially home dyes and when people have coloured it more than once) your hair will end up patchy. The natural roots of your hair will lift up to the whitest of blonde, but the ends will probably be left looking dull and orangey. I bet you didn’t have dull orange hair before, did you?

Then, there’s the condition issue. Bleach/lightener can literally suck the shine and health completely out of your hair. If you have long hair, the ends are likely to break, which could give you a chemical haircut, even if you don’t want it. This can be hard to fix, often once hair has been over processed, the best thing you can do is cut the worst of it off. Admittedly, we’re over exagerrating a little, with some good hair care and the right strength bleach this shouldn’t happen, but if it does, you’ll feel worse about your hair than when it was dark!

Lastly, as all over bleach will more than likely lift your roots lighter than the rest of your hair, you then get the issue of regrowth. Compared to Gwen Stefani blonde, even the lightest natural hair will look dark, and it won’t just gradually fade out, oh no, you will be left with a big, dark ruler line. Instead of your usual 6-8 weekly highlights, you’ll be noticing those dark roots in 2-3 weeks! Scary, isn’t it?

Fergi’s highlights took her from dark to sunkissed blonde in a healthy, natural-looking way. Gorgeous? I think so!

This isn’t all doom and gloom though, we aren’t saying you can’t go back to blonde, we’re just saying that an all over bleach is not the way to go (and certainly not one to try at home!). The best, easiest and longest lasting way to go back to your blonde is highlights. Before you protest and say you don’t want stripy hair, we aren’t talking about massive chunky slices of blonde, we’re talking full head, finely woven highlights of blonde to blend into the darker colour thats around and give you a sunkissed blonde that look completely natural. And when your hair grows through, the multi tonal blonde will blend into your roots, giving you a soft, faded effect rather than a harsh solid line.

Once you’ve had a full head, the upkeep can be easier than you would think. You probably won’t need to come in for 6-8 weeks (though many clients come back in around 4 weeks for a toner to be put on to banish yellow tones), and when you do you can opt for a T-section or half head to get rid of pesky roots without breaking the bank!

Have we swayed you against reaching for the bleach?

If you’d like to come in for colour correction, book in or come straight to the salon for a consultation with your chosen stylist. This will give you a chance to discuss the look your going from, how long it will take, and for the stylist to get a good look at your hair and take any tests she needs to before carrying out the service you decide on.  If you’d like to book in, just visit us in-salon on Parade Street or give us a call on 01736 361 878 and we’ll do our best to help you.

Kelly Anza loves… Fearne Cotton!

How-To No Comments

You watched her on Saturday morning TV as a kid, you watched her on Top Of The Pops as a teen and now you listen to her whilst you’re sat at your desk everyone morning on Radio 1. She’s on the cover of Cosmopolitan and she always in the style pages. She even has her own show (‘Fearne Cotton and… [insert celeb name here]‘). You can’t escape the fame of Fearne Cotton, but that’s not to say she’s one of those celebrities you just can’t get rid of – she’s down-to-earth, she’s funny and she oozes indie-cool style. Which is why we love her, obviously!

Her style is all about rock’n'roll cool, and her casual approach to her hair definately shows this off. Her colour is naturally mousey, but she has just about always had natural-looking, sunkissed blonde highlights, which not only brighten up her complexion but give her hair a bit more of a rock-chick texture. If you’re looking to steal Fearne’s colour, follow these tips:

  • If your hair’s naturally blonde or mousey ~ Ask your stylist for lots of chunky highlights in several different shades of blonde. This will give you a messy, fun blonde without taking away the natural colour of your hair. We think a really pale blonde, a honey blonde and an ashy brown look great together!
  • If your hair’s naturally light to medium brown ~ Go for subtle caramel tones to switch up your colour, but keep it looking low-maintenance and natural. The key to this look is looking like you haven’t spend ages in the salon or styling your hair. We think a tonne of slices of colour one or two shades lighter than your natural below your parting look great - and placing them below your parting means no regrowth! Perfection!
  • If your hair’s naturally red ~ Lucky you! Red hair is great for getting that rock chick vibe! Often blonde highlights on red hair can go a little brassy, and brown can look a little out of place, so instead of going down the highlight path, why don’t you just enhance your natural colour? Ask your stylist about InkWorks today and put a wash of orange, red or pink over your colour, and stand out from the crowd!
  • If your hair’s naturally dark brown to black ~ Blonde won’t look great on you, but different tones of browns and reds will look amazing against your glossy, dark hair! Try deep shades of plum and slices of velvetty deep red to really liven up your locks!

Fearne’s hair is, and almost always has been, long with no definate fringe, which is great because it means you can tie it up, curl it, straighten it, or just blast it off and leave it. However, for many of us, this just isn’t always possible, because we made the mistake of going for the Pob (Posh Spice Bob)), or the Frankie-Sandford-Crop. Don’t be sad though! If you’ve already got hair at or just below your shoulders, invest in some clip-in extensions (HeadKandy.com!). If you don’t qualify for clip in’s, just accessorise well!

Fearne’s daytime look is casual, messy and a little bit undone. To get the look yourself, was with a volumising shampoo and conditioner (Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body range is great!) and then towel dry until as much moisture is out of the hair as possible, and then comb into a middle/off-centre parting. Run some Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam through from root to tip, and then blast hair off until completely dry – try tipping your head upside down to get more volume!  If you need to, straighten a few sections, but otherwise, voila! You’re done in a record timing, leaving you a moment to grab breakfast before Fearne’s more formal and evening looks are still unpolish compared to most celebs, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t up the glam factor! With way more body and movement, Fearne keeps her usually rocky style cool and carefree, but gives it a sexy, classically glamourous twist. To get Fearne’s evening look, begin like above for her daytime look, but use the Extra Body Scuplting Foam to give your hair a little more oomph! Blast off with your head upside down and make sure to really focus on drying your hair away from your head at the roots. Once completely dry, grab a large-barrelled curling tong, and take large sections to create large, tousled curls in the ends of the hair – remember to curl away from the face at the front for a more flattering look! Break up the curls with your fingers and spray with a soft-hold hairspray (we like Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Light)! Finish off with some cat-eye liquid liner and a fierce red lipstick!

If you’d like to pop in for a consultation or make an appointment, either visit us in-salon on Parade Street, call us on 01736 361 878, or use our new online bookings tab to make an appointment yourself!

Kelly Anza loves… Glee!

How-To No Comments

If you haven’t heard about Glee, you must’ve been living under a rock for the past year. The US television phenomenon follows a group of oddball High School students and their teacher trying to regain respect for the school show choir (Glee Club). With it’s catchy choir-versions of pop songs and with guest appearances and music from the likes of Britney Spear and Lady GaGa, this show could be cheesy, but no, it’s funny, witty and very good fun!

And with all this good fun is some very good style, from Preppy Cheerleader Chic to Punk Rock Style, this show has something for everyone, and in preparation for series 2, we thought we’d take some style inspiration from the cast…

Racheal Berry

She might be picked on by the cheerleaders and the football team might laugh at her, but Racheal Berry knows she’s going to be a star. She works hard, is dedicated, and has the talent. Infact, she’s so confident, that she always signs her name with a gold star at the end. However, we’re not so bothered by her talent as we are her gorgeous hair!

The key to Racheal’s look is natural style, but still kept pretty. Her naturally dark hair is in impeccable condition, and has a really healthy, glossy shine to it. The key to this look is find a colour that looks natural on you – try going for your natural shade but adding some warmth for a more flattering colour, so go for a more golden brown rather than a flat, ashy blonde! The next thing is length, Racheal’s hair is naturally long, which enables you to get the loose tousled curls she wears, but sadly not everyone is blessed with thick, long hair. And if you’re one of these people, why not just fake it? go to HeadKandy.com for some gorgeous extensions to boost your style! Get them cut in by your stylist, so you can have long natural layers, just like the girl herself!

When styling your hair, use head protection – Racheal almost definately uses lots of good hair-care products to keep that glossy finish. Try washing your hair with a moisterising shampoo and conditioner (Paul Mitchell’s Instant Moisture is a life saver!) and once a week leaving an intensive treatment on the hair! Before you dry it, generously pray with a soft-hold heat protector like Paul Mitchell’s Heat Seal, and then blow-dry with a large round brush to not only give it body but smooth out those cuticles! Once hair is completely dry, use a large-barrelled curling on to curl some chunky sections of the ends of your hair, and then spray with a soft hold hairspray!

Quinn Fabray

Originally set up as the nasty cheerleader, Quinn Fabray soon became the show’s sweetheart after her unexpected pregnancy. With drama galore, it could be easy to look past Quinn’s cute preppy style, but it’s flattering, cute, and we love it!

Typically blonde, Quinn’s ‘All American’ style can suit just about anyone, even if you won’t suit blonde, a few subtley placed caramel highlights will lift up dark hair and give it an entirely different look. The best way for fair or mousey haired girls to get Quinn’s colour is by having lots of very fine highlights in a very pale blonde and then a darker more caramel colour with them. This will give you a perfect blonde but the darker colour will help to blend the blonde into your roots.

Quinn’s look can work on most hair lengths, but just below shoulder length is the best length for it. Quinn usually wears her hair up in a high ponytail for cheerleading, but later in the series she starts to wear it down much more. To style your hair like Quinn’s, part it slightly at the side and blow-dry with with a bit of a thickening blow-dry lotion in (Paul Mitchell’s Thicken Up is great). Try drying it with a round brush to get movement and shine in the ends! Finish off with a few loose curls in the ends with you GHDs, and then either finish with a pretty grip keeping it off your face, or in a high ponytail for a bit of Cheerleader Chic!

Mercedes Jones

Diva-In-Traning Mercedes Jones is definately the most glam of the Glee crew! Not one to shy away, Mercedes likes to be the in spotlight, and her flair for fashion and love of bling ensures that often, she is. And her hair definately reflects this…

Glossy and dark, Mercedes obviously puts a lot of effort into her hair. Often going for sleek straight lengths against her natural curls can be very damaging, however her hair is always in top condition. To keep your natrually curly hair in great condition (despite how much you straighten it) just follow these few simple steps…

  • Regular trims will keep split ends at bay, which will help stop your hair frizzing and looking damaged. Mercedes has longer layers in her hair, and in the first series often had a long, blunt fringe. Keep trims small but often to avoid having too much taken off is great if you’re growing your hair too!
  • A good treatment left on for a while once or twice a week will give your hair a boost of shine and condition every few days. Ask your stylist what your hair needs and what they recommend.
  • Serums can be a lifesaver if you’re prone to frizz. These will add moisture, protect hair from the elements and smooth down any frizz – Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum can be used before and after blowdrying, and will keep hair smooth until it’s next wash.
  • Finding a good heat protector is essential for both straightening and curling your hair. Use one before you dry your hair (like Paul Mitchell’s Heat Seal) and then one before styling as well (an aerosol spray like Hot Off The Press by Paul Mitchell works wonders) will keep your hair feeling soft, healthy and smooth, no matter what you do to it.

Emma Pillsbury

Completely OCD and a hopeless perfectionist, Emma Pillsbury is the McKinley High Guidance Counsellor, and her prim, pretty, neat style drew our attention straight away. With her light chesnut hair and that perfect blowdry, we are instantly in love.

The secret to her style is a really good cut! With the length just below shoulder length and longer layers, Emma’s style isn’t so much about the layers or the length as it is the shaping around the face. From her long, swept fringe to the length of her hair is all layered, making for the perfect blow dry.

To blow dry your own hair like Emma’s, wash with a volumising shampoo (Paul Mitchell’s Lemon and Sage shampoo from the Tea Tree range smells divine) and use a light conditioner on just the ends. Towel dry hair to get most of the moisture out, and then run a volumising mousse through the hair, we recommend Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Sculpting Foam! Rough dry hair until it’s just damp (focus on getting body into the roots by pointing the nozzle of the hair dryer upwards) and then using a round brush, blow dry hair section-by-sectiom (1 inch sections) curling the hair under. When you get to the front, use the round brush to blow-dry the hair tightly under, and then use your hand to brush the flicks back, creating Emma’s gorgeous flick! If you can’t get the hang of this, use your GHD style to create the flick instead! Spray generously with a strong hold hairspray and your blow-out should last for days!

Tina Cohen-Chang

Punky, alternative and shy, Tina’s the alternative member of the Glee club, and often finds it hard to stand out against the other Divas.. But we think she stands out perfectly, with her edgy style, and her hair? Stunning!

Tina’s naturally black hair stands out not only because of it’s length and shine, but also because it’s perfectly coloured, and that colour suits her. If you want to go for a more alternative style, but aren’t naturally dark, there are other ways of getting a bold, noticable look without going that dark. Naturally brown hair? Why not try a bright scarlett red or a deep plum, with a few black slices around the front? Naturally fair? Go for the lightest, whitest platinum you can, with a few  rebellious lilac streaks! It’s all about finding what suits you, and making it brighter. If you want to get Tina’s electric blue streaks, why not ask your stylist for some InkWorks? Semi Permanent colours in everything from Electric Blue to Hot Pink to Bright Yellow, these are the perfect way to switch up your look, without committing.

If you’re not allowed brightly coloured hair or streaks because of school, college or work, why not get some brightly coloured clip-in extensions? Then you can just clip in those bright colours when you want them, and when you can’t have them in you can just take them out! Perfect!

Our Christmas Party at The Great Escape, Truro!

News No Comments

This year, we originally intended to do what everyone does for their work Christmas party, you know the deal, get dressed up after work, go for a meal somewhere and drink much too much wine, go out far too late and wake up feeling tired, hungover and pretty much just awful. But then we realised we do this a lot throughout December anyway, plus with the salon getting busy and working late.. Suddenly going out didn’t seem so inviting.

And then Kelly came up with the best idea yet: We visit The Great Escape beauty salon in Truro. The Great Escape is a gorgeous little beauty salon just outside Truro’s city centre. With a cosy, vintage-esque style (much like our own!) and lots of comfy cushions, the salon makes you feel instantly at home from the second you walk in the door. The girls in there were absolutey lovely, and quickly led us up to the Relaxation Room where we would be spending our Girl’s Night In. It was a cosy and warm ittle room with 2 sofas and a lovely big beanbag and loads of cushions. Complete with champagne, tea, smoothies, nibbles and face masks, the room was a complete dream – not to mention the Sex And The City boxset! We relaxed and had some pizza wfirst, and then 2 by 2 went off for our treatments. We had the most relaxing facials and back and shoulder massages ever, and manicures. We then finished off our own facials in the room with luxury Spieza face masks, which was so much fun!

We couldn’t recommend a Girl’s Night In at The Great Escape enough, and if you want to find out more, just go to The Great Escape Online or onto their Facebook Page – just search The Great Escape Beauty!

Get New Year’s Eve Fabulous!

Fashion, How-To No Comments

Whether you love it or hate it, New Years Eve is one of the biggest, most glamourous nights of the year around the world. From Masked Balls to Club Nights, this is the night everyone wants to dress to impress, whether you’ve found your midnight kiss or not. Because we want you to feel and look your absolute best this New Year’s Eve, we’ve put together a quick guide to get you ready for the big night…

5 Days to Go, Decemeber 26th.

You’ve eaten until you couldn’t move, you’ve drunk yourself into a permanent headache, and you don’t really feel like you can move anywhere except the sofa… Well, pour yourself a large glass of water and get moving! The best way to feel good is to boost yourself with energy and keep hydrated, so go for a jog around the park or a dog walk across the beach to get that bloody flowing again! This will not only make you feel better, but will help stop bloating before the big day! Try to stick to soft drinks from now on, and don’t over-fill on bread, pastry or cakes. We know you’re probably not at your thinnest after Christmas Day, and losing weight in such a short amount of time is near impossible, but let’s not try to gain any more, okay?

4 Days to Go, December 27th.

You’re feeling much better after a good night’s rest and a little bit of exercise, so today we’re going to start on our outfit! Most sales in larger shops and departments stores will start today, despite it being a Bank Holiday, so get out there early! The best way to seek out the perfect party dress is to shop around, don’t have a specific idea in your head, try on as many as possible (even if it looks gross on the hanger) and choose the one you feel comfortable in. Remember to seek out shoes and accessories in the sales too, the perfect dress could be already in your wardrobe, but just missing that perfect belt or that sequin blazer! If you’re unsure but someone else is eying up that dress, check the returns policy on sale items and if you can, buy it and decide later, that way if you don’t want it you can take it back, but you aren’t risking missing out on a total bargain!

3 Days to Go, December 28th.

Providing you haven’t already, book in at a local beauty salon for a couple of treatments. We reckon the best Pre-New-Years treatments are a good manicure (and a pedi if you’re going to have your toes out!), an eyebrow shape, and a spray tan. You may fancy more or less, but when booking ask if there’s any packages or offers that can save you money – this way, you can make sure you’ve covered all areas for the cheapest price! We recommend getting these all done on the 30th, so that they have time to settle before the big day. If you have time before, book these before, as you’ll be gutted if you have to paint your own nails!

2 Days to Go, Decemeber 29th.

Hopefully you will have kept up the gentle exercise, eating well and having plenty of water since Boxing Day – well, now it’s time to up-the-ante! Begin avoiding food that will bloat you (things like:  beans, peas, broccoli, cucumbers, pickles, onions, apples, bananas, wheat products, eggs, carbonated drinks and cream) as this can make you feel fatter than you actually are! However, don’t fall into the trap of not eating at all, as this can send your body into panic mode and you will put on more weight than you lose! Today is also a great day to plan your make-up for the big day, a practice run will ensure you know what you’re doing and give you a chance to experiment with any new products or looks before you’re friends are rushing you on the night! We’ve included a few videos with great make-up for New Year at the bottom that you might be interested in!

All spray tans vary, and your beauty therapist will let you know what to do, but with many the day before you go for your tan is the day to exfoliate and moisterise… So make a really good evening of it! Pop down to Boots or Superdrug, buy a luxurious scrub and some other nice products, and have a proper pamper! Run a bath, use a face mask, light some candles, watch a girly movie.. Enjoy it! Today is also the first day Kelly Anza Hair Design is open again for the New Year, so if you haven’t already, book in for a blow dry or a hair up to take some of the load off your shoulders the day before!

1 Day to Go, December 30th.

Today is Salon-Pamper day! For a spray tan, follow you’re beauty therapist’s instructions on what to do before the tan – this often means not using an products like deoderant or moisteriser and just taking a plain shower. This is also a great day to get any last-minute bits and pieces you need, from tights to something to drink before you go out to false lashes, if you gather up all those odds and ends today, tomorrow will be much less of a rush! Today is also the day, if any, that a huge red zit will start to linger under the surface on your nose. Don’t panic and squeeze or pick at it – this will only make it angrier, more red, and possibly nasty and scabby – not the look you were going for? We thought not. Get hold of some spot-on gel (anything with tea-tree or witch hazel will be great) and just keep gently reapplying – remember that at least when it’s just a bump, make-up will cover it, but if it’s a sore or a scab, nothing will cover it totally.

Remember to relax, keep drinking plenty of water and eating the right foods – a portion of chips and a pint could make your stomach go from flat to bloated for tomorrow night!

0 Days to Go, December 31st.

It’s tonight!! Today it is essential to have a really good lie in, and a good, wholesome breakfast. Porridge is a great one, as it will keep you going and warm you up, plus with some blueberries and honey it makes it delicious and healthy. In the morning, make sure you have everything you need to hand, as now is the last chance to get anything you don’t really have, and remember not to miss your hair appointment! Before you go out, have something filling to eat, we love things like pizza and pasta, whilst they might not be healthy they’re easy to make and will keep you full all night (until you stumble into the kebab shop anyway…) and will help prevent alcohol from going straight to your head.

Remember to book any taxi’s you might need in advance (and put the money in a separate pocket in your handbag so you won’t spend it without meaning to!), take your mobile phone and keep it in a safe place, and stay with your friends! Less importantly (but in some ways moreso), take a bottle of eyelash glue if you’re wearing falsies, some clear nail varnish if you’re wearing tights (to help stop ladders in their tracks), and your lip colour/gloss to touch up! If you’re doing big or styled hair, buy a small bottle of Paul Mitchell’s Freeze and Shine to pop in your handbag – £3.25 for constant hair touch ups!

Remember, stay safe and have fun this New Year’s, and we’ll see you in 2011!

P.S. Great New Years Make Up…

Post-Break-Up Hair Appointments ~ The Right Way

How-To No Comments

It’s happened. You saw it coming for months. He’s packed his bags, you’ve cried your way through The Notebook, laughed your way through Forgetting Sarah Marshall, tried and tested every bar of Cadbury’s in Tesco, and now you’re finally feeling a whole lot better. Infact, so much better, that you’ve decided to need to start afresh. It started with rearranging your entire flat, and then you started a whole new diet, and now, you need a change. A big change.

Not a week goes by without someone wanting a whole new look. Colour, cut, style (and you know they’re heading to Topshop straight after) – and why? Nine times out of ten it’s because of a man. Now we aren’t saying that a drastic change to go with your new single lifestyle is a bad thing – not one bit! A great new look can set your head straight, and help you to move on. It’s fun, and at least with a new look you can see pictures with The Ex and pretend it’s not you!

However, despite a big change being great for a break-up, it can also lead to regrets and general bad-feeling. Always had bum-length blonde locks, and love them? Just because you’re dealing with a break-up, don’t change something that is you. He may have broken up with you, but you shouldn’t break up with the love you have for your hair.  So if you’re considering the Post-Break-up-Hair-Appointment, here are a few things remember:

1. Wait 2 weeks, at least. Because even if you don’t feel it, your mind will be all over the place. Do you really think taking inspiration from GaGa is a good idea? Would you in your right mind do this? Take some time, browse the internet and some magazines, and settle on a style you really like. Pin it on the fridge for a week before you do it – if you have any doubts, don’t make that appointment.

2. If you’re gonna do it, do it right.  And by right, we mean completely. If a whole new you is what you’re really in need of (after the all important waiting period), do it properly. Never had a fringe? Blunt and heavy! Always been blonde? Go dark Chesnut! Long straggly ends? Go for a Sexy Bob! There’s no point in getting a Post-Break-Up ‘do if it’s not going to give the right message. You should be telling people you’re back, you’re confident, and you don’t need Him anymore. Hair can speak volumes, let it say something about you.

3. Make a repeat appointment when you go for it. That Rihanna-Red will not stay vibrant if you don’t keep it up, and you don’t want people thinking you’re as drab as your hair do you? Ask your stylist about the best ways to keep your style up, and make the next appointment there and then, whether it’s highlights in 6 weeks or a semi to brighten it up in 2.

Now we’ve helped you with your new ‘do, head to the MAC counter for all new make-up and then hit up Topshop. Tonight, you’re going to be a whole new woman. On his credit card? Oh go on then. See you in The Zero Lounge!

If you’re looking for a new style or colour, pop in to Kelly Anza Hair Design for a free consultation, or phone us on 01736 361 878, and we’ll help you find the (sensible) change you’re craving!

All Partied Out: The Kelly Anza Team’s Festive Season Survival Guide!

News No Comments

Because whilst we all get a few days off, and should probably take this time to relax, how can we?! With parties and invitations to nights out and junk food coming out of our ears, we can’t resist to take up every offer and get into the festive spirit, even if it means wearing ourselves out. But you can prevent the damage, with these few simple steps…

1. Start Off Beautiful!

It’s so easy when you’re busy with work and parties and dinners to begin to forget about yourself, whether it’s forgetting to get your hair done or letting your nails chip – and the best way to prevent this? Start off Beautiful! As soon as December 1st hits, book in for some very important appointments. Firstly, book in to have your hair done – whether it needs to be done now or later in the month, book well in advance, most salon’s find the week before Christmas gets booked up as early as November, so make sure you get your way in there! Secondly, go for a pamper. A facial at the beginning of this time will make sure your skin’s in good condition before you start to abuse it (with the late nights, the forgetting-to-take-your-make-up-off, the hangovers and getting dehydrated), and why don’t you treat yourself to a Gel Polish Manicure? These genious treatments (offered now in most salons in Penzance) involve putting a layer of coloured gel (like you would use for nail extentions) over the nail, which lasts until you have them taken off! Perfect for when you’re too busy to reapply!

2. Always Take Off Your Make-Up

And we know it’s a chore for most lovely ladies after a night out! But think about it for a second: During the party season, you want to look your best, so without realising it you’re probably cakin more make-up on your face than ever before, and we all know you’ll at least once reapply on top of you evening make-up – don’t deny it! Just thnk of your poor old pores, getting more and more clogged up with dirt, getting drier and more and more tired… Counteract these acts of skin misjustice with a skin regime to boot! Start off by investing in some good quality cleansing wipes – we don’t think you can go wrong with Simple’s Cleansing Facial Wipes – at just £2.99, these little wonders remove all traces of make-up and leave skin fresh, smooth and moisterised.

3. Prep That Pout!

Whether it’s underneath the mistletoe, or when the clock strikes twelve at New Year, soft, smooth, kissable lips are essential during the party season, despite the harsh cold. Often lips can get particularly dry, chapped and sore when the weather turns cold, and a great tip for reviving them is smearing on loads of Blistex’s Relief Cream – it’s penetrates the lips and deeply moisterises them! Once this has stopped them feeling cracked and sore, keep up that smoothness with Carmex Cherry Lipbalm! Not only does it smell delicious, but it protects the lips and keeps them smooth, and is great to prep your lips before wearing a gorgeous Berry lipstick, the only colour our lips will be gracing this festive season!

4. Defend Your Locks From Heat!

Simple blow dry to curled, smoothed, backcombed, it’s all damaging, and with the cold weather taking it’s toll as well, your hair’s going to be sad! And I know we repeat these things all the time but: Invest in a good shampoo, conditioner and weekly treatment. Use the treatment once or twice a week and leave it on for as long as you can. Avoid using excessive heat on your hair. Always use a heat protect spray before any heat-styling. And finally, a good serum can revive those ends without washing your hair. Live by these rules, this party season, and stop your hair from tiring itself out.

5. Perfectly Primed and Ready!

The perfect primer will not only make your make-up apply easier, it’ll make it last longer and it’ll mean you need to use less! The whole point of a primer is to prep (or prime) your skin ready for foundation, so that it can really hold on to the skin and do the job it’s meant to do without sliding off or flaking! Which we all know happens a lot when we’re on the dance floor! There are loads of different brands and kinda, but if you’re looking to spend a little more, MAC’s Prep + Prime is great, but GOSH also do a great one for just £11 if you’re on a budget! If you’re looking for the perfect long lasting, crease free smoky eye this season, look no further than Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. This little Holy Grail of Make-Up will make your shadow appear brighter, more vibrant, and make it last all night long. We swear by it for crease free eyes, and you only need a tiny bit!

6. Look After Those Feet!

Whether it’s platforms, peep toes, or kitten heels, we all know heels get a good wearing during the party season – and whilst they lool beautiful, they can also make walking for the next few days agony! We can’t stop this post-party-pain, but we can help you in a couple of ways! First off, as a general rule, the cheaper the shoe the more pain you’ll be in! A good quality pair of heels will be made to support your foot and look good, and the sole won’t be too solid – have a good walk around in them before you buy, and imagine standing up in them all night. Are you wincing? If so, don’t buy them! Secondly, always take a pair of flats with you. A night can be ruined if you have to go home early because your feet hurt. You can get loads of fold-up flats, that still look party gorgeous, to fit in your clutch. No excuses!

7. Keep Hydrated!

Sometimes, during this time of year, we kind of forget about keeping hydrated. We swap our diet cokes for mulled wine, our early nights infront of the TV for late nights on the dancefloor, and our usual salads for salty roasts. And in the end, our skin feels dry, we feel exhausted and frankly, we don’t want to part any more. Often, these are signs of dehydration, which can make you feel sluggish, give you headaches, and cause your skin to break out and become dry. Not what you were planning on? Didn’t think so! If the cold air’s making you crave a hot coffee, swap it for a fruity or herbal tea. Alternate every alcoholic drink on a night out with a soft drink (this will also prevent a hangover from hell!). Lastly, when you get in, before you go to bed, have a pint of water. I know that sounds excessive, but it will help rehydrate you!

8. Look Sensational, Not Starved!

When everyone’s talking about their amazing little black dress or their new skin tight trousers that their gonna wear this season, it’s easy to begin to feel a little competitive about how you’re going to look in your outfit. You know, when you start noticing little lumps and bumps, thinking your fat when you’re not! Avoid this by eating healthily from the start of the month. Avoid treating hangovers with a fry up, and opt for porridge and fruit instead. Swap bloaty fizzy drinks for still, and always go for diet coke in mixers!  These will stop you eating any unnecessary large ammounts of fat and anything that will make you feel bloated. Don’t you feel better already?!

9. Plan Your Way Home!

It sounds obvious, but a safe way home will end the night on a high! Wandering around on your own late at night is dangerous, so make sure if you’re walking, you’re with a friend. If you’re planning on getting a taxi home, book it before you go out – this is an especially good idea if you have somewhere to be in the morning – and in your name. This also gives you a great opportunity to haggle the price of the taxi a little cheaper, before you’re too drunk to be taken seriously. Lastly, if you have a designated drive, try not to make them feel left out! Arrange for another of your party to stick to the soft drinks, and if she/he says it’s time to go, listen!

Subtle, Pretty Ombre or Need Your Roots Doing?!

How-To No Comments

You can’t open a fashion magazine at the moment without seeing it. It’s everywhere, all your favourite models, actresses, popstars, they’re all doing it. Or not doing anything, as it would seem. Ombre hair (which to you and me just looks like massive roots) is massively in, and whether you like it or loath it, we’re pretty sure it’s here to stay. From Rachel Bilson or Elle Macpherson to Drew Barrymore and Alexa Chung, all our favourite Fashionista’s are donning this sunkissed, California-inspired style.

However, don’t think it’s as simple as just missing out your next few colour appointments – sadly, it’s just not that simple! Ruller straight root lines and dramatic two-tone locks won’t do it. It needs to be faded and beachy, but still shiny and healthy! The colour needs to fade from a natural brown at the roots (too dark and the contrast might be too severe, too red and it can look orangey, too ash and it could look dull) to a fresh, dark natural blonde at the ends – if it’s too light, it could look coloured, which is the look you don’t want!

There are loads of different techniques for acheiving this look on the market, from cleverly placed foils to balayage, so we’d recommend visiting your chosen stylist for a consultation if you’re looking to achieve this look on your hair! Still intirgued? Check out these ladies who have already opted for ombre…

Ditch the Dress this Christmas: Miss Minimalist

Fashion No Comments

Every winter, we only have one mission: to find the perfect party dress. The dress that will take us from Bonfire Night to New Year, will attend every party, is bold enough to make us stand out but subtle enough that we can change the look with different accessories… This mission is one that we usually fail in too, instead of finding the perfect party dress, we find 5 almost perfect dresses, costing us 5 times the ammount we want to, leaving our purses empty and our wardrobes embarrassingly full with one-wear-wonders.

However, at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we’ve decided this winter we’re going to change all that – because dresses aren’t the be all and end all of party chic. From playsuits and jumpsuits to pencil skirts and vintage blouses, we’ve decided this year we’re going to create the perfect budget winter wardrobe to bring you to next spring, without blowing all the cash on one dress! And our budget for each capsule wardrobe? £150! Not too shabby for a selection of red carpet worthy outfits that will last you all winter, eh?

Outfit #4: Miss Minimalist

You have bigger things to worry about than shoes and clothes… You like to keep things smart, simple, and sexy. Too much frill and colour leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth, it’s all about sharp tailored lines and neutral tones, not looking like a circus tent.

Statement Piece: The Black Flaired Trousers

These gorgeous bell bottomed tailored trousers are a great investment buy ~ not only do they suit just about every size and shape, but they flatter them. They’re smart for work but can be dressed up for a night out or thrown on with a comfy jumper and leather belt for a day of shopping and coffee – £59.99 from Zara.

Cover Up: The Camel Trench

A staple in any fashionista’s wardrobe, a good camel-colour trench will work from autumn through to spring, year after year. The flattering shape means it’s suitable to wear with dresses, trousers, skirts or shorts, and it’s neutral colour will work with anything. We found this one for just £24.99 from H&M, so as well as being flattering and having longevity, it won’t break the bank.

Shoes: Leopard Print Pumps and Camel Platform Courts

When you’re in black, the idea of a ‘pop’ of colour can sometimes seem a bit tacky, but all black can make you feel like you’re going to a funeral, so swap the bright for something a little more nrutral. Greys, nudes, browns and camels are really popular this season, and look gorgeous with black trousers. The leopard pumps (£16.99) add a fun element to your look without being OTT, and the camel platforms (£22.99) are chunky enough to not be drowned by your trousers. Both from New Look.

Basics: The Cut Out Vest

This sexy cut-out vest will add some understated sex-appeal to the entire outfit. The black keeps the look sharp and elegant, but the cut out mesh panels keep it sexy and seductive. £14 from boohoo.com.

Finishing Touches: The Statement Necklace

Finish the look off with a large, glamourous statement necklace. We found this one going for just £0.99 (£3.99 p+p) on ebay! The more glam, the better, as this will take your look from formal chic to Christmas Party Glam!

End Price: £143.94

Top Tip ~ Switch the look up with sequin cardis and and chunky belts, experiment with elegant jewelerry and keep make up sharp and simple – chiselled, bronzed cheekbones and sharp liquid liner keep the look fierce.

Great on curly hair, it’s liquid texture helps you define curls and hold them for hours, even days, and gives incredible shine! It’s handy pump means that you can decant it into other bottles, such as smaller travel sized bottles which are great for keeping in your handbag on the go. You can even buy litre bottles of it to ensure they never run out.

Great for: Holding any style you throw at it – this has industrial hold and a shine you wouldn’t believe!

Rubbish for: Soft, floppy, silky styles – this spray is all about texture, hold and attitude!

Spray Wax

Applies like a spray, feels like a wax – great for girls who long for second day hair after a wash or for shorter haired girlies and gents who want texture without the worry of being too heavy handed with the wax, this spray add hold and definition without making the hair feel stiff or sticky. It’s flexible hold makes it easy to style and not as hard to wash out as other waxes can. It’s also small enough to pop in your handbag if you’re going out for the weekend!

Rubbish for: Holding styles or protecting hair from the elements!

All the above products are by Paul Mitchell and are available from Kelly Anza Hair Design.

Step-By-Step: Fishtail Plaits!

How-To No Comments

Everyone seems to be wearing them at the moment, from Cheryl Cole to Rihanna, everyone’s loving fishtail plaits. And whilst they look laid back, easy, simple, fun, a shocking number of people don’t know how to create these amazing braids! We promise they’re easy, just follow our step by step guide…

Before:

Here, we’ve use a selection of our model’s clip in extensions, and a set of red ones – a different colour going through the plaits adds interest! You do need long hair for this, but don’t worry if yours isn’t quite there yet, just visit HeadKandy.com! Make sure the hair is well brushed and smooth, or it’ll be much more difficult!

1. Starting with your hair smooth and brushed, separate the hair into two even sections – don’t worry about it being perfectly neat, this looks great because of it’s undone, versatile look!

2. Take a small strand from the underneath of one of your sections of hair. The smaller the better as it makes the plait look more ‘fishtail’ like. Pull the strand over across the section of hair it’s from, and then add it into the other side.

3. Do the exact same on the other side, pulling the strand over from it’s original section to the new one.

4. Continue this all the way down, taking each strand from the back of the opposite section. When you reach the bottom, secure with a snag-free band.

5. Once secured, use the palms of your hands to gently rub the plaits – this will help to give them a slightly worn, messy look, which is what the fishtail plait is all about! If you want a looser look, pull small strand out of the plait slightly, but if you want it to look smart and polished, you can skip this last step!

Clip In Extensions: Our New Best Friends… Sometimes…

How-To 1 Comment

You’ve, at last, finally found the perfect clip in extensions – the right colour, the right thickness, oh my! It’s very exciting. You got them home, and clipped them in, and marvelled at their beauty, and yours, now your have the long thick hair of your dreams. You took them for a visit to the hairdresser, who cut them in so they blend into your own hair perfectly, and put a few curls in them for Saturday night. They’re your new best friends!

But then, you thought you’d give them a wash, because they smelt a bit stale and smoky after Saturday night, and now they just don’t feel the same. They’ve lost that shine and feel dry and brittle, and are leaving you thinking, what have I done wrong?

Well, we’re happy to tell you, you’ve done nothing wrong! This is the sort of thing that happens to everyone when they first wash their extensions – when you buy them, they’re usually coated in some kind of serum or sillicon coating to keep them looking fresh and shiny in the packet, which is why they feel unbelievably soft until the first wash. And then it’s a shock! But don’t panic, you just need to learn how to care for your extensions to prolong the life of them – if you look after them properly, they should last a lifetime! So we created a little guide to help you rebuild your extension romance…

Problem 1: They’ve begun to feel elastic-y and are really hard to brush!

Often, this is because they’ve been bleached or pre-treasted before you buying them – but don’t worry too much! Invest in a really good strengthening treatment, and also an intensive moisturising conditioner. After shampooing, blot the extensions with a towel to take away most of the moisture, and then smother them in the strengthening treatment (we can also provide an intensive strengthening in-salon only treatment at the price of around £10-£15, which may be of use if your extensions are old or particularly dry). Wrap them in a towel or plastic bag, and put in a warm place for around 20 minutes. The heat will help open up the hair cuticle, ensuring the treatment really penetrates the hair, and because they’ve been wrapped up none of the moisture will be able to escape. Once you’ve left them, rinse them off and apply the moisturising treatment, and do the same. Finish off with a smoothing conditioner, and rinse them well. This should make them feel much healthier.

Problem 2: They feel fine after washing, but then begin to feel horrible when I dry them!

Whilst your natural hair can probably get away with some pretty severe blow-drying, extensions can’t – they’re very prone to being dry because they don’t have the constant supply of nutrients that your natural hair does have. This can cause them to feel expecially dry and brittle after blow drying. First off, step away from the blow-dryer. Are you really in that much of a rush to dry them? The best thing to do is to wash them in the evening, comb them through, and instead of blowdrying, lay them out on a towel near a radiator and let them dry naturally over night. This will stop them severely drying out, and leave them dry and natural ready to style the next day. Secondly, don’t go and put those lovely treatments to waste! Lock that moisture in with a good quality blow-dry lotion/serum and heat protection spray! They’ll never feel good if you don’t treat them well!

Problem 3: Their condition feels fine, but after I wash them they are soooo tangly!

Before washing your extensions, begin to gently comb out any knots from the very ends, working up. The more gentle you are, the easier they will fall out! Once you’ve combed and brushed them through ready for washing, run a gentle shampoo (anything bland or moisturising!) through the hair from clips to ends, being careful not to rub the hair – almost like you would conditioner! One the shampoo is covering all of the hair, rinse out with warm water. Condition them in the same way, and whilst the conditioner is on them, comb them through again. It’s time consuming, but oh-so worth it!

Problem 4: They never go as smooth as my own hair!

If you like to wear your extensions straight, remember that you extensions are going to always be drier than your own natural hair! This will affect the outcome of any styling! However, try using a heat protection spray before straightening them, and then smoothing a serum over them to smooth them down completely, which should add shine as well! Also, one problem might be that your chosen hair extensions aren’t REMY hair. Remy basically means cuticle correct, so in the extensions the hair is all pointing the same way as it naturally grew. You’re probably thinking, why does this matter? Well, think about a cat’s fur, and how it grows in one direction, and if you push it the wrong way, it get’s all ruckered up, yeah? Well, that’s what the cuticles of your hair are like, and if you constantly straightened your hair upwards, it wouldn’t become as smooth and as glossy.

Problem 5: Once I’ve curled my extensions, they’re really hard to straighten!

Once you’ve curled your extensions, do you really want to have to put them through the trauma of all that heat all over again!? If you really have to, start off by giving them a really good brush to get as much hairspray out of them as possible! This will instantly make them easier to straighten. Next, spray them down with a touch of water or something like Awapuhi Moisture Mist by Paul Mitchell, and either blow dry them on a low heat or leave them to air dry. Next, spray on heat protection, and slowly glide the straighteners down each section, but only once, and then leave to cool. Smooth over with serum and you should have perfectly straight, silky hair.

The Kelly Anza Team’s Winter Survival Guide… For Hair!

How-To No Comments

The nights are drawing in, the clocks have changed and we’re swapping salads for soups. That’s right, summer’s over already (it feels like it’s barely begun!) , and so we’re stowing away our bikinis and our suncream in favour of scarves, hats and woolly jumpers. It’s not all doom and gloom, mind you, because with the winter months comes parties, presents, and general good festive feeling all round! But, before you party too hard, spare a thought for your poor old hair…

Poor old hair!? I bet you’re wondering what damage winter can do after you’ve spent all summer doing your best to protect it from the sun, right? Well, winter is just as bad, if not worse! The cold, blustery weather will suck the moisture and general good health out of your hair, and not forgetting all that dry, hot central heating! Constant dramatic temperature changes (dramatic? Yes! Think of going shopping at christmas, all the shops are hot and outdoors is cold, and you’re constantly darting from one to the other!) can turn your hair dry, brittle and static, and so here’s our guide to help rescue those locks!

Always Be Prepared!

Now, we all know the old saying that a good offence is a good defence (or something?) and this goes for your hair as well! The best way to stop is use preventative measures before it gets too bad! Before winter really sets in, and just as the summer is out, invest in a good cut and if you colour your hair, a colour too. A good cut will get summer’s nasty dry ends off and mean your hair is healthy before winter begins. If you’re having your hair coloured, ask on booking your appointment to upgrade it to include a Wash-House Experience or a strengthening streatment. This will cost you around £10 – £15 more, and if you book in for the Wash-House Experience, you will also recieve a free take home kit to extend your good hair’s life! This is a great thing to have done regularly as it gives the hair an extra boost of protein and moisture that it can be hard to acheive at home.

The Winter is Here!

Next, begin spoiling your hair, and continue to do so all winter. treat it like you do your skin. Everyday, apply ‘moisteriser’, or as we know it, conditioner. A good ‘daily’ conditioner will keep your hair soft and strong everytime you wash it, but remember that this cannot be enough. An intensive treatment to use at home is a great way to upkeep your hair’s condition, we think something like Paul Mitchell’s Super Charged Moisteriser is great for a once-a-week pamper. This will inject the hair with tonnes of moisture – simple smooth a 50p sized amount through towel-dried hair, from root to tip, clip back, and leave for as long as you have time for (we reckon 5 minutes or more will do the trick). When you wash it out, your hair will feel as good as new, but don’t forget to smooth your daily conditioner over it again as well!

Most hair doesn’t agree too well with being washed everyday, and in the winter it’s very important not to overwash your hair – your scalp produces oils that help condition your hair, and washing will remove these. Every second day should be about right, but if you have dry, curly or damaged hair, try to wash it less, and smooth serum or leave-in conditioner (Paul Mitchell’s The Conditioner is amazing, and gentle enough to use all over the body) and battle greasy roots with Batiste Dry Shampoo (£2-£3 in most health and beauty shops).

Hats are a great fashion accessory and are, admittedly one of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep warm, and whilst you might think that it’ll protect your hair, thinks twice. Constant wearing of hats can overwork sebaceous glands, leading to lank, greasy roots. Make sure yous hair isn’t too tight and that between wears you get it regularly washed or dry cleaned. Hats can also increase static – to combat this, use a leave in conditioner and a light hairspray to combat this – Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Light hairspray has great hold but is barely detectable in hair, and is designed to decrease static.

No matter how much you’re in a rush, never, ever go out with your hair wet in the winter. Not only will it make you absolutely freezing, but if it’s cold enough the water on the hair will freeze and cause your hair to snap off – not in such a hurry now, are you?

Light at the End of the Tunnel

The ice is thawing, there’s snow drops and daffodils scattered about, and you get the treat of walking home from work in the daylight – it can only be the end of winter! Hurrah! But before you rush off and forget your hair-care routine don’t forget a few little things…

  • Regular deep treatments should be part of your hair care routine year round, and used more often in mid summer and winter.
  • Getting your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks will keep your ends feel thick and in great condition, and will nip off any split ends before they work their way up the hair shaft – make sure you get those locks looked after!
  • After every colour, try to book in for an extra treatment – some of our salon only treatments will begin to rebuild even the most damaged hair! Ask to upgrade your appointment on booking.
  • Get ready to battle summer…

If you have any questions, would like to book an appointment or ask about the range of treatments we carry in the salon, give us a ring on 01736 361 878 and we’ll do our best to help!

Outfit #3: Designer Goddess

You live in the best designer copies you can find on the high street, and every year you save religiously for the new IT handbag. Jimmy Choo for H&M? You queued for 6 hours to buy the whole collection. Giles Deacon for New Look? You sold your SATC box set to pay for it…

Statement Piece: The Velvet Playsuit

It’s cute but has a luxury designer feel, this gorgeous velvet playsuit will keep you warm and have people asking you about it all night. It’s just £38 for ASOS.com and can be dressed up or down… We like it in this gorgeous deep red.

Cover Up: The Waterfall Jacket

This cute ‘waterfall’ style jacket is the perfect cover up this winter, and will add a bit of tailored-chic to your part look – and it’s seriously good value too, at just £14.99 from H&M! Tip: Add a chic cameo brooch to give it a vintage look!

Shoes: Grey Pumps and Killer Black Lace Heels

These cute pumps add a great military feel to the outfit for daytime, and grey is a great soft alternative to black! Comfy and cool, and just £23. For night time, glam the look up with these killer heels. Black lace adds interest with a different texture, without being ott, and what’s better is these are just £30! Both from ASOS.com

Basics: Daytime Jumpsuit and Nude tights.

This gorgeous jumpsuit is just £27.99 from New Look. It has a gorgeous fit with a beautiful crochet back – understated detail! It’s a bargain and can be dressed up or down from day to night. We decided it was unnecessary to get a picture of nude tights (they aren’t exactly pretty) but are a great addition to the outfit at just £2.99 from H&M!

Finishing Touches: Glam Red Lipstick

MAC’s lipstick in Ruby Woo is a classic deep red that will set off any glam outfit – leave the rest of your make-up simple and chic, and a dash of this red will set your look on fire! £12.50 from Mac Cosmestics.

End Price:  £145. 47

Top Tip ~ Add subtle gold jewelerry for a richer look – a small gold pendant works perfectly – and finish with your favourite designer-esque clutch bag.

Sexy, Stylish, Spooky… #4 Ghostly Girl!

Fashion No Comments

The ultimate in last minute Halloween costumes, ghost outfits usually consist of an old white bedsheet, a couple of strategically placed eye holes, and not a great deal else. However, this is neither sexy, nor stylish, and is certainly not a look we’ll be replicating this halloween! Because who wants to go to a party in a bedsheet, really?!

Instead, take inspiration from the past, be it Marie Antoinette or 1950s pin up, all-white outfits and deathly pale skin is the perfect look for haunting your favourite parties this October, and personally, I’m thinking 1920s, ghostly lace, pale make-up, flapper girl style…

The Outfit

Whilst the items we’ve chosen are pretty much spot on, the chances are you’ll have something similar in the back of your wardrobe, so instead of going out and buying all new, have a hunt around – you never know what you’ll find! We’ve stuck to cream and white, but any pastels work for this look as long as they’re very pale.

The Dress – £26.99 - New Look

Pale Lace Tights – £8 – Accesorize

Lace Heel – £45 – ASOS.com

Earrings – £14  – Accesorize

The Hair

When doing a Vintage style look, the hair simply needs to go with the outfit, and as we’re going for a 1920s Flapper Girl look, finger waves are simply the best route to go down! They’re a little trickey and might take a few goes, but well worth it in the end – as they’re hard to explain without showing you, we ound this amazing video on YouTube to help us explain!

The Make Up

Here, we’re thinking milk pale skin and kissable lips…

Face: After cleansing and moisterising, apply a thin layer of a foundation primer – this will help keep your skin matte and stop your foundation from melting or flaking off. Follow this with you usual foundation – if you have one, use a matte-finish foundation in the palest colour you can get away with! Flapper Girls always had china-doll smooth skin. Next, apply a touch of a frosty pale pink blush to just under the cheek bones, giving the face some definition without taking away from the ghostly pale of your face. If you don’t feel pale enough, use a highlight on your forehead, cheek bones and nose to give you an ethereal glow! Finish with a pale-coloured setting powder, and take in your handbag to re-apply, just in case! A simple black beauty spot applied just below the eye is a great finishing touch – just use a black or dark brown kohl pencil!

Eyes: Keep eyes simple but sexy! After applying an eyeshadow base/primer, use a pale beige-grey shadow across the entire eyelid, blending up into the brow-bone. Highlight the inside corner with a shimmer white, and then use a darker grey (usually a flapper loo would carry more brown tones, but we’re looking for a colouless ghostly effect!) in the crease and ouside corner to gently contour the eye.  Finish off with a very thin line of black liner on the upper eyelid, as close to the lash line as possible, and then curl your eyelashes and apply a couple of coats of mascara.

Lips: Bright blood red lips usually look great with a flapper-girl outfit, but there’s something about them that’s just too bright and alive for a ghost ! So, find your deepest, darkest purply-red berry lipstain (think the colour your lips go after eating too many blackberries) apply a couple of coats, concentrating the colour in the centre of your lips, and then wait for it to dry – colour that will last all-night-long, and look sexy and ghoulish all at the same time!

There you have it, our very last Sexy, Stylish, Spooky… For this year! Hope you all got some great ideas for you halloween outfit – if you and your friends took inspiration from our Sexy, Stylish, Spooky.. Series, please send in your photos and we’ll feature them right here!

Salon International!

News No Comments

As a majority of you probably already know (because we haven’t been able to stop talking about it) this weekend the Kelly Anza Design Team travelled up to London to go to Salon International! For those of you who have never heard of it, Salon International is a huge trade show for those in the hair and beauty industry, with many world reknowned hair care and beauty brands. Not only is it a great opportunity for these brands to show off their products, but also for top stylists to present their latest looks and ideas and pass these on to other stylists. Needless to say, we returned feeling tired but inspired, ambitious and armed with new and exciting products!

Whilst there we met up with the Paul Mitchell team, who were promoting their new Awapuhi Wild Ginger range of haircare. Not only does their new range smell delicious, but it combines the moisture-rich juice of the Awapuhi Ginger plant (a Hawaiian staple in the Paul Mitchell hair care range) with the KeraTriplex formula, a protein almost identical to human keratin (which is what our hair is made from) found in pure sheep wool from New Zealand.  With this combination, Paul Mitchell have created a system that reduces breakage by 80%, improves shine by 35% and prevents colour fade by 67% – which is quite amazing! As one of the only salons in the UK to even have tried this product, let alone have it in the salon, we currently don’t have it up for retail, however feel free to ask one of our stylists what Awapuhi Wild Ginger can do for you and your hair in the future…

We also came back with a pair of brand new, gold plated GHD stylers. The GHD stand beckoned us from afar, with it’s gold and black, it’s huge chandelier, not to mention the most amazing wallpaper throughout… It was incredible, and right down our street – Vintage, Gold, with tonnes of framed pictures of the GHD Stylist’s amazing work. Needless to say, we were in hair heaven.

On the many stages we also got to see some of the worlds top stylists showcasing their newest looks and ideas for upcoming hair trends, which included some amazing hair up techniques – from using staples instead of grips to building hair out of a steel cage, we saw it all, and can’t wait to put our own twist on all the amazing styles and techniques we learnt about. Got a Christmas party lined up? Why don’t you pop in to the Salon for a free consultatiom on how we can make your hair party fabulous this Christmas? Be it edgy and unique or elegant and traditional, we have it covered.

Not only did we learn about Hair Up techniques but some of the incredible barbers from clipper brand “Wahl” showed us some surprisingly elegant, feminine and edgy cuts – using clippers instead of scissors. Sounds mental, we know, but it creates a flattering, soft, feathery finish that can be time consuming with scissors. From sleek bobs with gorgeous choppy layers, to edgy designer crops, Wahl had it covered – and that’s not even starting on shaving a London skyline into someone’s hair…

If you’re interested in making an appointment with one of our stylists, give us a ring on 01736 361 878, or pop in to make an appointment or for a free consulation in the salon!

Sexy, Stylish, Spooky… #2 Putting the Vamp in Vampire!

Fashion No Comments

Whilst figuring out suitable Halloween outfits is a nightmare, attempting to dress as a vampire is even more of a challenge! Because whilst shows like True Blood are great, and the Twilight films are hugely popular, other than a bit of dark eye make-up and some digitally enhanced fangs the vampires look much like everyone else - and at Kelly Anza Hair Design, looking like everyone else is the last thing we want!

So we put together a few things to keep you standing out from the crowd, without the fake blood and painful glow-in-the-dark fangs…

The Outfit

With this weeks outfit, we decided we wanted to keep it sexy, without being OTT, but we also wanted to keep it away from being too typical of a vampire outfit, so you’ll see we’ve steered away from fangs! Here’s a few ideas to tickle your tastebuds (without the blood)…

The Hair

With a look like this, hair needs to be a little more soft and natural to stop you looking too harsh – so think soft, sexy waves…

  • Long haired ladies, get some body in that barnet! The vamp look is all about looking seductive, and we all know nothing is sexier than big hair! Use some mousse, get a round brush in there and get some volume and some waves! Soft curls and waves aren’t always easy to acheive at home, so why don’t you pop into the salon for a blowdry? £13 for gorgeous hair? Bargain!
  • If you can’t stand the thought of having your hair all down, why don’t you put it in a low side parting, sweep it all to one side and fasten it with grips – elegant but sexy, this look will also show the side of your neck. Brave ladies – why don’t you recreate a vampire bite to show off?
  • Shorter hair? Blowdry to get some body into it, and keep it looking sleek! Soft waves are the key, so step away from the straighteners!

The Make-Up

When your hairs vamped up, your heels are on and your corsets pulled in tight, the last thing your going to want to worry about is you make-up – so for this look, we’re going to keep it simple, no falsies, just clear skin and dark lips…

Face: Apply your normal foundation, patting it smooth, and concentrate on getting extra coverage under the eyes – whilst Kristen Stewart rocks the dark circles, we aren’t so keen! Use concealer to pay extra attention to any blemishes! For this look, we want you to look healthy and sexy, not dead, but still pale! So step away from the bronzer and use a light dusting of rose-pink blush just on the apples of your cheeks, to give you a healthy flushed glow. Next, dust your whole face with a light powder - don’t be too heavy handed with it, we want your skin to look matte and doll-like, not caked on!

Eyes: The secret to the eyes is to look natural, so first apply an eye-primer on the lid to even out the skin tone, and then just line the inside corner and the rim of your eye with a white pencil - this will brighten your eyes and make them appear wider. Finish off by curling your eyelashes and applying a couple of coats of mascara.

Lips: We think a strong, bold lip looks great with this, but we don’t think red would suit, so we’ve gone for a few layers of black gloss. I know you’re thinking “Black Gloss?!” but it’s absolutely gorgeous! A few layers of it will give you a glossy, dark lip without much effort! We like the YSL one but Rimmel does a cheaper vesion!

Step-By-Step: Curling with GHDs!

How-To 1 Comment

It’s quick, easy and produces some incredible looks – but still, hundreds of gorgeous girls are still unaware of how easy it is to curl with their straighteners! And because we’re constantly getting girls asking us how, we thought we’d put together a step-by-step guide on how it’s done! If you have any questions just send us an email or a message on facebook, or if you just can’t quite get the hang of it, ask your stylist to show you on your next visit to Kelly Anza Hair Design!

Before:

First thing’s first: What You Need!

  • 1 pair of GHDs (or other medium-sized straighteners)
  • Heat Protection (We used Hot Off The Press by Paul Mitchell, designed to be used with hot styling products on dry hair.)
  • 2 Sectioning Clips (Thick haired girlies may need more!)
  • The WonderBrush (not needed but definately helps!)

1. Starting with dry hair, brush thoroughly to remove any tangles – if you naturally have wavy or frizzy hair, don’t be tempted to straighten it first! This isn’t necessary and will just cause more harm than good!

2. Take your first section at the bottom back of your hair – we recommend between 1 and 2 inches, but the choice is yours; spray with your Heat Protection and if you’re looking to add volume to your hair or use the curls as a base for putting it up, gently back-comb the roots with your Wonder Brush.

3. Take a strand of hair (the size will depend on the overall look your going for, smaller sections will create more defined spiral curls, wheras large sections will give it more of a loose, tousled wave) and clamp the staightener at the roots, as if you were to straighten it, however as you pull the straightener down the hair, twist it so that the hair is wrapped around the barrel of the straighteners. Glide the straightener right down the hair, and let go.

4. Leave each curl to cool as you carry on curling the rest, taking the same size sections all the way up, and spraying each one with your chosen Heat Defence. As you reach the top, backcomb each section to give the look height and volume – much more flattering than flat hair! Around the front, try to curl hair away from the face for a more flatterying finish.

5.  Sprtiz with hairspray and then run your fingers through curls for a more natural, separated finish – if you plan on having your hair curly all day, try to curl it tighter in the morning as the curls will drop!

Ta-Da! Gorgeous Curls with you GHDs!

Sexy, Stylish, Spooky… #1 The Undead!

Fashion 1 Comment

Halloween can be great fun - big parties, pumpkin carving, spooky decorations… But sometimes getting dressed up can be a challenge for the fashion conscience girl. I mean, you don’t want a Mean Girls moment and turn in in full on horror, do you? And those costumes from fancy dress shops are truly cringeworthy…

It can be a total predicament, but sometimes, the subtle nods to halloween fancy dress are what makes a great costume, so we had a hunt for the best costumes so you don’t have to! From The Undead to Zombie School Girl to Evil Sorceress - we have your back covered.

For our first Halloween themed how-to, we decided to go for the subtley undead – we don’t mean facepaint, bones and ripped clothing, we just mean a couple of bones and some spooky make-up…

The Outfit

When you’re trying to keep it low-key, Halloween can be a minefield - what’s too much? Do I even look like I’m in a costume? So we thought we’d put together a dead sexy outfit, from jewelerry to shoes, for any budget. Here’s a few must-have costume highlights…

The Halloween Playsuit – £48.70 - Lipgloss and Black

Fishnet Tights – £4.99 – New Look

Black Shoe Boots - £28.99 – MissGuided.co.uk

Vampire Teeth Necklace – £13.99 – AttitudeClothing.co.uk

The Hair

For a simple look like this, any hair goes, but there’s a couple of things you can do to give your outfit a little bit more wow factor…

  • Flash of Colour – Fancy really switching it up? Get a streak of colour through your fringe or across the side of your hair (this is great for long haired girlies who want to wear it up!). Blood red looks great in black hair, and a black slice is sure to mix up blond locks. Why don’t you pop in for a consultation and ask about our Semi-Permanent InkWorks treatments, for bright and daring colours on a budget!
  • Dare Devil Quiff – A punky quiff can add a rebellious touch to your outfit, and let’s face it, when else can you get away with skyhigh hair? Simple take a section of hair at the front of your head, about eye-brow to eye-brow width, backcomb the roots, and then do the same about 3 inches from your hairline. Generously hairspray and then fasten the ends at the crown of your head (backcomb further back for a mohawk look).
  • Make your own totally unique DIY fascinator – A fascinator adds instand glam to any party look, so why don’t you make a sexy, spooky fascinator yourself? Just grab yourself a plain hairclip, some cheap plastic halloween decorations (we like spiders best!) and some netting, grab some glue and get creative!

The Make-Up

Some might think more subtle make-up would suit this look - we aren’t those people! We think some dramatic red lipstick, bit eyelashes and maybe even a little bit of contouring on the cheeks, just to look extra skeletal! Here’s a quick guideline of what we’d do, but there’s a million different ways you could go about this!

Face:  Using either your normal foundation or a shade paler than your skin tone, lightly apply foundation or tinted moisteriser across the whole of your face – remember to blend well at the edges! Apply concealer where you need it, but keep it looking light and matte. Using a matte blusher of your choice (extra brave girls, try a dark brown eyeshadow),  trace the line of contour underneath your cheek bones (the bit that goes in when you suck your cheeks in). Trace this lightly back to near your ears but don’t bring this line too far forward – about an inch back from your nose and mouth is about right!

Eyes: Start off by dabbing a white, shimmery shadow around the inside corner of the eyes – this will not only make your eyes look bigger, but make the rest of your shadow appear blacker and brighter. Using a black shadow, fill in the rest of the eyelid, and blend towards the brow slightly, so it doesn’t look too harsh – we think a shimmery black looks best for this, but this is only a rough guideline! If the black doesnit look like its covering, try using a black kohl pencil underneath as a base. Apply a line of black liquid liner to the top lid, and use a kohl pencil to line underneath the eyes as well. Apply the biggest falsies you can buy and finish with a touch of mascara!

Lips: The perfect finishing touch, line and fill your lips with a red lip pencil (this will help it last extra long) and then go over that with your red lipstick. Finish with a slick of Lipcote to ensure it lasts all evening, and for an extra splash of glamour, add the shiniest red gloss you own!

Let us know how your Undead Costumes, Hair and Make-Up go, and send us you pictures!

Get The Look: The Saturday’s New Video “Higher”!

How-To No Comments

Since we first laid eyes on the Saturdays, we knew they were ones to watch in the style stakes – and they have not proves us wrong! Always perfectly on trend, stylish and sexy, they all have their own look, and we love it. Stylish and fun, this is a girl band we want to be a part of! And let’s face it, their hair is always spot on. From Una’s long auburn locks to Frankie’s edgey crop, we always keep an eye out for their hair - and their new video “Higher” is a perfect example of these lovely ladies good taste in hair styling, which is why we decided to tell you how to get the look!

Vanessa’s Sexy Ponytail!

For this look, it’s best to start out with freshly washed hair so that you can blow-dry it appropriately to go into this style, however this isn’t totally nessecary as a little bit of dry shampoo and a good hairspray can go a long way!

First off, start by washing your hair with your usual shampoo and conditioner, but we would recommend that thicker and curlier haired girls use something smoothing and moisterising, as this look is all about sleek glossiness! After washing, towel dry your hair thoroughly to get most of the moisture out – this will cut down drying time.  Before we crack on with the drying and styling, pick your chosen weapons of defence – heat defence that is!  We like to use a thickening mousse for this, like Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Sculpting foam, but if your hair’s partyiculoarly thick, why don’t you try mixing a little Sculpting Foam with some Super Skinny Serum by Paul Mitchell? This will cut down drying time and hold your style! If your hair is particularly fine or flat, why not try a root-lift spray too?

Once you have everything you need, rough dry the hair until it’s almost dry without putting in a parting - concentrate on drying the roots away from the head, to get that all important rootlift! Next, grab a large round brush, and, taking small sections from the nap of the nack (clip the rest out of the way for now and work your way up the head) blow-dry the hair smooth at the ends, and, if you can (we know it’s tricky on yourself) work on getting a bit of a curl or wave at the ends. If you point the hairdryer down the hair (towards the ends) it will help close and smooth the hair cuticle, acheiving Vanessa’s glossy shine!

Now you’ve completely dried the hair, section off the back, about an inch or two at the nape of the neck, and start to back comb the roots very gently. This will help give the ponytail hold and body! When you’ve backcombed the roots, take large sections and gently curl either using a tong, wand or your GHDs. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, it’ll look better if it’s a little messy! Continue to do this all the way up the head, backcombing more from the crown forward to simulate Vanessa’s quiff-like style.

Using a soft-bristles hairbrush, gently smooth out all the backcombing where you can see it (nape of the neck, around the hairline) and begin to pull hair into a ponytail. Decide how far up with want the ponytail to be (we think the around the crown of your head looks best!) and very loosely fasten with a snag-free elastic. Because this is fastened very loosely, you should still have some body in the front, but if you don’t just gently tease bits out of the main pony and re-grip, pushing forward slightly. You can really play around here, but remember, the look isn’t meant to be tight and smart, so let go a bit, if a curl falls out, leave it!

Once you’re satified with the shape, take a section of hair from the underneath of the ponytail and wrap it around the band, gently securing with a grip. Spray generously with a shine-enhancing spray with a lot of hold - we love Paul Mitchell’s Freeze and Shine! Team with a pair of hoop earrings and you’re good to go!

Una’s Tousled Locks!

Una’s long hair suits this kind of casual, wind-swept, run-your-fingersthrough-it look, but it’s not as get-up-and-go easy as it looks! Find out how to acheive it below!

Start out by washing your hair with a light but caring hair product – part of the beauty of this look is having really healthy hair, so make sure you’re giving it what it needs! We reckon most long haired girls will benefit most from something like the Paul Mitchell Strength range of shampoos and conditioners, which focus on getting protein back into damaged hair. Towel dry thoroughly, and then spray a product like Tea Tree Lemon & Sage Thickening spray through the lengths of the hair – this delicious smelling spray gives hair body but stops it from feeling stiff or sticky.

Rough dry the hair concentrating on getting body at the roots until it’s almost completely dry, and then using a paddle brush, dry the end concentrating on making them smooth – point the hairdryer towards the ends of the hair to smooth the hair shaft as it dries. Once it’s completely dry, grab your trusty GHDs (other traighteners will work, but curling tongs are good too!) and, taking large sections of hair (the bigger the better) and gently curl the ends of them, giving them more of a loose wave rather than curl. Once all hair has been curled, simple run your hands through your hair, toss it upside down and spray it with a light hairspray like Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Light – enough to give it a little hold without weighing it down or making it stiff!

Team this look with fresh, dewy skin for a healthy, country girl look, or with smokey eyes for a vampier night time look!

Rochelle’s Retro Curls!

This look is sexy, glam and cool, and ooozes vintage style. Rochelle’s long dark hair looks gorgeous, but we think blonde bobs would look incredibly Marilyn Monroe with this look!

This look is best with second day hair, but if you’re starting from clean, use some mousse in it so give it some hold, and just rough dry in until comletely dry.

To begin, give your hair a good brush and get out an tabngkles from the ends – it’s good to start a style like this from fresh. Next, generously spray aheat protection spray through the hair – we love Hot Off The Press by Paul Mitchell!

Starting at the back, Backbomb the hair at the roots, and then, if you have the time, curl each section with bendy rollers – however, we’re usually in a rush, so we’re gonna talk about GHDs. Take sections about an inch thick, and tightly curl with GHDs, spraying each section with a soft-hold spray as you go. Whem you get to the front, curl all your sections away from the face for that flicky, vintage style look.

Once all the hair is curled and backcombed, again spray but this time with a slightly stronger hairspray like Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Finishing Spray, and run your gingers through the curls slightly.

Mollie’s Boho Waves!

In this video, Mollie’s look is very similar to Una’s, in that it is long and tousled, however Mollie has gone for a more Boho themed look by topping it of with a summery straw trilby – a great way to hide second or even third day hair!

Starting off with your unwashed hair, spray a little dry shampoo into the roots (blondes, talc is great for this!) and brush until it’s settled in. This will disguise any signs of grubbiness in case your hair flies off in the wind! Next spray some heat protection spray through your hair – this will not only protect it but give it a little texture when curling – and then we’ll get started on styling!

Using your trusty GHDs, take small sections of hair and curl – if you curl them so the hair goes diagonally down the straightening iron instead of straight across, so the curls are longer and looser.  completely until all the hair is done, but if you have shorter layers around your face like Mollie, try to keep them slightly straighter and just flick them away from the face instead of being curly or straight.

Once finished, run your fingers through the curls to break them all up, and then run a serum through like Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum to give them shine and a bit of much needed moisture!

Pair this with your favourite trilby and some Kohl lined eyes and you too can have Mollie’s Boho Rock Chick look!

Frankie’s Sexy Crop!

When Frankie chopped her locks off into this edgy crop, we fell instantly in love – it combines the soft girliness of a voluminous bob with the punky fahsionista toughness of a crop. The result? Sexy rebellious hair to suit the most straightlaced of girls.

If you’re lusting after Frankie’s cut, go for it! It’s a crop with the feeling of loss when you go to bursh your hair. Its quick and easy to style, and suit almost anyone – if you’re thinking about it, why not pop into the salon for a free consultation so you can make sure it’s right for you?

Frankie’s crop is so popular because it means sexy waves without the dedication on long hair. If you want her look, begin by ashing your hair with a volumising shampoo (we love Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Range) and a conditioner if you need it. Rough dry and run a bit of styling lotion through the hair - this will smooth down the shorter side and give the longer side hold and heat protection – Paul Mitchell’s Fast Form is great for this, and smell gorgeous. Begin by blasting the hair off until almost dry, focussing on drying the hair forward. Next, grab your trusty medium sized round brush, and section by section, dry the longer side so that it flicks under. As you get to the front, take your sections horizontally across the head, and, still using the same brush, dry the fringe under and across slightly, so it acheives this sexy flick.

Once you’ve dried all the hair this way, finsh of with a bit of wax to mess it up and hold it in place – Paul Mitchell’s Spray Wax is perfect for this, as it covers evenly without getting too clumpy! Team with a bad girl attitude and some feminine jewelerry and your look is complete!

And there you have it, the lowdown on The Saturday’s gorgeous hair looks in the video for Higher!

Look out in October for our fun and sexy series of Halloween Hair Ideas!

Now that Kat Slater has made her dramatic entrance back on the set of Eastenders, we thought we would take inspiration from this loudmouth londoner and do a feature on… Yep, you guessed it, leopard print! Ok so maybe not Kat Slater style (or Bet Lynch for all you Corrie fans out there) but you get what we mean, right?

After seeing this print cropping up all over the place for some time now and more recently on the catwalks at London Fashion Week,  Leopard Print is certainly making it’s mark in the world of fashion. From tights, to dresses, to make-up, this is a trend that isn’t going to go away quickly.

So how do you wear it? Well it’s easy, one print item at a time, two at a push. It can be anything from a scarf to a dress, or if you’re feeling really adventurous and fashion forward clash it with a different pattern. Team with red lipstick to take you from day to night but keep the rest of your make up subtle.

Don’t be afraid of this trend, embrace it and most importantly of all have fun with it!  But do remember ladies, more often than not, less is definitely more!

Here’s a few of our favourite Leopard Print picks this season…

How-To, News 1 Comment

Here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we like to stay one solid step infront of the pack, which is why when looking at the predicted hair trends for this Autumn/Winter, which is why this winter we’ve decided to take our inspiration from the recent Spring/Summer catwalk shows – and they did not disappoint. From Mulberry to Topshop, the runways were full of glamourous, sexy styles, from the well loved Candyfloss hair to Florence Welch inspired colour, and we love it.

Topshop Unique ~ Candyfloss Hair

Think middle-partings, pastel pink slices, endless crimping and backcombed to no return…

Charles Anastase ~ Blunt Fringes & Tousled Bobs

Messy, tousled shoulder skimming bobs with blunt, heavy fringes… Replace the floral with an aviator jacket and wide leg trousers, and you have the perfect City Girl look for this Winter…

Wedding Hair… For Men!

How-To No Comments

Whilst the Bride’s getting her make-up artist sorted, choosing a dress, fretting over hair up, or down or up, we know you gents quite often find yourself sat twiddling your thumbs – you don’t need to wear make-up, and the suit’s already been picked out, what else is there to do? Hair?

Okay, so I know you’re probably thinking “I don’t need my hair done, it’s only short!” but don’t you think it would be nice to chill out with a cup of tea and have your hair washed and styled on the morning of the big day? Or if you’re having a summery wedding, why not pop in for some subtle highlights before the big day and bring out your inner-surfer? It’s not going to make you look less manly, but it will stop you feeling jealous of the girl’s pampering session!

One Month Before the Big Day

This is a great opportunity to talk to your Bride-To-Be and ask her thoughts on your hair – she will have undoubtedly already chosen a dress and had a consultation with her hairdresser, and will probably have ideas for you too! You don’t have to tell her what you have in mind - just make sure whatever you do, she isn’t going to hate it (no tramlimes and mohawks without permission boys!). Once you’ve had a chat, pop into the salon for a consultation – a stylist might be able to give you ideas you’d never thought of, highlights, cuts, toners, the possibilities are endless!

One-to-Two Weeks Before the Big Day

On your consultation, arrange your next appointment at least a week before the big day - but no more than two weeks, or your style will possibly have grown out or you colour faded before the big day! We reckon about a week in advance is good for colour, as it means you can get used to it before the big day or if you’ve decided your choice wasn’t for you , you have plenty of time to change it! It’s also a great time to get your hair cut if you’re looking for a total restyle, because again, it’ll give you time to get used to it (and you’ll get a chance to show the bride your new look before the day).

The Big Day

If you’ve not had a chance to get your hair cut before now, this morning is a great time to get that mop neatened up! Book into the salon (bookings should be made in advane to avoid disappointment) for the morning of the wedding, and relax with an invigorating head massage and a hot cup of Green Bean coffee – exactly what you’ll need to start the day! If your hair’s already been cut, why don’t you pop in to have it styled? Whether you just want a little wax in it or us to straighten and style it, it’s a great opportunity to relax before worrying about speeches and suits with the groomsmen.

If you have any questions, are looking to book in or are simple just a concerned bride, give us a ring on 01736 361 878, and we’ll do our best to help you relax, ready for your special day!

Flying back into trend: The Aviator Jacket

Fashion No Comments

Hair and fashion go to together like two peas in a pod, and let’s face it, what’s a great up-to-date hairstyle without a stunning catwalk-worthy outfit to go with it? And because sometimes we all need a little help in finding that perfect dress, coat,  jacket, shoes… We decided to enlist the help of our very own Fashion Guru! Have a certain fashion problem you need solving? E-mail us at salon@kellyanza.com or on our facebook and we’ll try to feature it in an upcoming article!

Flying back into trend: The Aviator Jacket

No, we are not talking about RayBans or Topgun, we’re talking about the Aviator Jacket. If there’s one item you should be wearing this Autumn it is the aviator, with it’s snug shearling collar and tough leather shell, this is the jacket of the season, perfect to take you right through from Autumn to Spring.
Redesigned from the original flight/flying jacket (a statement jacket worn by airforce pilots in the 1940s and onwards) and first seen this season all over the Acne and Burberry catwalks,  British clothes horse Alexa Chung brought it into the spotlight, and now more recently Chloe Sevigny & Rihanna (when she’s not holidaying in Barbados) have been spotted wearing the fashion must-have.

So what can you wear this stylish yet warm and comfy jacket with, I hear you say? More to the point what can’t you wear it with, this wardrobe staple will easily go with any outfit.
Miss Chung toughened up her velvet evening dress with her Acne aviator while Chloe threw hers over some ripped Levi shorts. Either way you can’t go wrong, this jacket is for everyone no matter what size or shape you may be.

My top 4 jackets featured below range from around £58 to £750. Ok, so not everyone has £750 lying around but this is the Acne aviator that started this season’s huge fascination with this classic design! No wonder it’s such a favourite with celebs!

1. From Topshop – £58

2. From Topshop – £78

3. Acne at net-a-porter.com – £750

4. Asos.com – £350

Back to School Cool!

How-To No Comments

It’s september, and that can only really mean one thing – a new school year, a new term, and sometimes even a new school. And on that first bad back, who doesn’t want to make a great impression on their new classmates and teachers?! We know we always did, which is why we’ve dedicated this How To to all you pretty girlies heading off to school next week! And don’t panic about getting up at 5am to get yourself smart – these tutorials (with a little practice) should take you no more than 10-15 minutes to complete, leaving you with an extra ten minute snooze before dragging yourself up!

The French Plait

Whilst this is probably the hardest of our three styles to master, once you’ve learnt how to do it, you’ll be able to do it in seconds – which is great for school! These are great for keeping your hair out of your eyes and neat and tidy, and will mean you don’t have to think about your hair all day. But don’t think this means it’s boring! You can use french plaits a million different ways – across the front of your hair to keep your fringe out of your eyes, across the back diagonally, ending in a low, side pony tail, if you even have the time (which I’ll be impressed if you do before school!) you could add a couple of little cornrows to your parting.

A french plait, for those of you who don’t know, is simply your basic plait but fastened to the head. This is acheived by adding in sections of fair each time you pass a strand into the middle. It sounds complicated, but here’s a quick video tutorial we found that’ll help you get your head around it!

It’s tricky at first, but we promise if your persevere, and practice on anyone you can get your hands on, it gets loads easier! Here’s some pictures to show you what you can do with french plaits…

The Neat & Chic Ponytail

I know you’re all thinking that ponytails are SO obvious and SO boring but the really do not have to be! They can be the sleekest, smoothest, most gorgeous hairstyle, if you just know a simple little trick…

First off, make sure your hair is smooth and tangle free, and if you have time in the mornirng or even the night before, maybe just run the straighteners through it to ensure its straight, smooth and shiny. Next, pull all your hair tightly straight off your face (this is great for girls with long, 1 length hair but if you have a fringe why not put it in a quiff or even take the time to french plait it to the side? Smoothing if with a brush, pull it into a high ponytail and secure with a snag-free or covered hair elastic. Before you do anything else, spritz your hair with a light mist of hairspray to stop any flyaways. Now, for the special trick! Take a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail, no bigger than pencil-width, and wrap it around where the hair elastic is, and secure with a hair grip, again, on the underside of the ponytail (so no one can see how you did it!). And there you have it, the seam-free ponytail! And we promise, you’ll get loads of compliments on it!

The Low Bun

This is one of our favourite looks in the salon, mostly because almost anyone can do it and it’s a great carrier for some cute accessories! It works on straight hair, curly hair, and even if you haven’t had time to blow-dry it, straighten it, curl it, whatever, it still looks super cute! Especially if you mic it up a little and sweep it across to the side!

To acheive this look, simply use your hands to loosely gather your hair at the back of your head (you could use a brush and wear this look a bit tighter, but we prefer it a little more beachy and casual), just above the nape, and secure with a thin snag-free/covered hair elastic. Next, continue to take small sections of hair, twist them a little, and using hair grips just grip them right in at the base of the pony tail - if you want a messier look, gently backcomb each piece before twisting and gripping. Do this until all your hair is gripped, and then spray a lighty hairspray all over, and voila! You have a cute and pretty surfy bun! When doing this, you may find other ways you want to acheive this look, or twist in the hair and that’s completely upto you – if you want to leave some long sections out for a more punky, messy look, do it! It’s your bun!

Make it Your Own

The best way to make your hair really your own at school (without breaking the rules) is to decorate your favourite looks with some pretty accessories and clips – this is expecially cute if you can find some to match your uniform colours! There’s hundreds of things on the high street, but here’s a couple of our favourites!

These pretty and elegant clips are just £3.99 from New Look, and would look great tucked in a french plait for a bit of school-girl sparkle.

These cute Leopard print slides from topshop are just £6.50 and are bound to bring a bit of an edge to any cutesy bun!

This pretty floral headband can girly up an style in an instant, at just £8 form Topshop, it might just be one of our favourite Aumtumn buys!

The Make Up

Whilst we all know make-up’s stictly forbidden in school, a little gloss and mascara won’t hurt, so here’s our favourite back-to-school make-up tutorial!

Have a great time at school guys! Let us know how these looks work for you,and if you have any questions, just ring, email or pop in to see one of us!

Summer Offers with Paul Mitchell Luxury Hair Care!

News No Comments

Do you deserve a little treat?

yes we do!

We think so, and apparently Paul Mitchell do too, which is why they have such amazing offers on their products at the moment. Their range of luxury, cruelty free products have been created by hairdressers, ensuring the best quality, and all for an affordable price – which is why we, at Kelly Anza Hair Design, swear by it.

This summer, Paul Mitchell are offering sets of 500ml Instant Moisture Shampoo and Instant Moisture Daily Treatment for just £20 – the bottles are larger than the 300ml we stock, and will last you forever. This is a great system to last you over the summer months when sea, sun and pool water can make your hair feel dry and difficult - great for anyone with normal to dry hair!

Anyone with coloured hair will know what a pain the summer is – whilst the sun is gorgeous, and our tans are fabulous, we hate our quickly fading hair. So when we heard that Paul Mitchell were also offering sets 500ml bottles of Colour Protect Shampoo and Conditioner for just £18.50, we couldn’t be more happy. This luxury shampoo gently cleanses hair without removing any colour, whilst the conditioner softens and protects hair and colour without weighing it down. And for this price? Why not!

This summer, Paul Mitchell have also added a new product line to go with their gorgeous-smelling line of Tea Tree products. We had the delicious smelling Lavender and Mint range, to smooth and condition, and of course, the original Tea Tree Special Shampoo, for the most invigorating cleanse and the freshest smell you can find, and now we have Lemon and Sage, a fresh, revitalising shampoo to help add body and volume to flat locks. To celebrate the launch of the Lemon and Sage line, Paul Mitchell are currently offering a free bottle of the Lemon and Sage Thickening Spray when you buy the shampoo – this spray makes a great accompaniment to the shampoo, as it adds tonnes more body to the hair, without making it feel stiff or dry, and has the same delicious smell.

And whilst we’re on the subject of body, have we told you about our Little Wonder yet? For just £1.96 we can offer you Vogetti’s Little Wonder, a handbag sized teasing brush for big haired vixens on the go. This little beauty can be used to style heavy fringes, smooth frizzy areas and build volume on sky scraping styles – at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we’ve all bought one, because at £1.95 it’s a total steal – and we promise that you’ll use it almost every time you style your hair!

Plus, at the moment when you buy Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Special Shampoo, a great invigorating cleanser that helps cleanse hair and sooth the scalp, you get a free bottle of Lemon and Sage body wash, great for early risers to add a dash of zing to their morning routine!

So there you have it, all the lastest and greatest offers from Paul Mitchell - Only available whilst stocks last!

Quick & Easy Sexy Summer Styles!

How-To No Comments

It’s almost August – and here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, that can only mean one thing – parties, parties, parties. Be it on a beach or at a BBQ, we can’t get enough of the most sociable month of the calender (except maybe December, but whatever!), or the gorgeous summer fashions. We’re loving floral shorties, slinky dresses and metallic sandals. What we aren’t loving, is faffing around with heat-styling tools, getting hot and bothered, when all we really want is to be on our way out, in the sunshine with our friends and families. And that’s the reason we created our Quick and Easy guide, to sexy summer hair – because let’s face it, just a tan is not enough!

On The Beach

Beach hair is sexy – everyone knows it, that tousled, salty, surfy hair is gorgeous. What isn’t gorgeous? Faded colour, dried out ends, and dodgy fringe tanlines restricting you from having your hair up for the rest of the year. Which is why we reckon a gorgeous, casual hair up is the thing to have – and it’s nicer than a basic pony tail. Start off by taking the first section of hair at the front of your head (usually your fringe!) and twist it up, pulling it back, and grip it. Repeat this across the front of your head, and down the sides – and don’t be afraid to play around with this, if you like your hair in a side parting, twist it and grip to the side, if you like your hair straight back, do lots of twists straight back like cornrows – the outcome is down to you. Then, taking larger sections at the back, to the same over the back – don’t think about it, just pull bits back, twist them and grip them. Once all your hair is completely up, spray generously with either a strong hold hairspray like Paul Mitchell’s Freeze and Shine, or a UV protection spray.

The best thing about this style has to be it’s great Day-To-Night tranformation - going to the bar from the beach? Simple pull all the grips out, run your fingers through your hair and clip the front back, and you have beachy tousled waves, without the GHDs. This style is great because of it’s diversity and ability to suit all hair lengths - we recommend it for growing out short cuts – but sometimes longer hair is harder to get up, so a simple bun can work the same. We think this looks great finished off with a gorgeous flower clip, like this one from Etsy. Hawaiian chic, made easy!

At a BBQ

BBQs are one of our favourite kinds of parties, and what’s not to like? Yummy salads, massive burgers, tasty drinks, all in the sun! You know what the only bad thing is? Tucking into a tasty hot dog when out of no where a gust of wind blows your hair straight in your face – and your food. So our favourite boho chic style for BBQ fun – without ketchup-hair – is a gorgeous fish-tail plait. This might sound complicated, but it’s seriously as easy as a normal plait, with a lot more style. Leaving your fringe forward, pull hair back and the the side at the nap of the neck, and separate into two. Take a small strand from the back of one of the two sections, pull it out, over the section, and then add it to the underneath of the other. Repeat this, but taking hair from the other section every second time. After a while you should start to see how it’s becoming an amazing looking plait. Carry on, and then secure at the bottom with a clear plastic snag-free band. This style looks great messed up a bit, so rub the plait gently between the palms of your hands to almost ‘frizz’ it up a little.

Finish off with a chic elastic headband worn around the temples, we love this one with feather detail from Etsy!

Summer Wedding

Champagne, love, dancing, weddings are full of great things, and whats better than the only time we can think of, when it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a ridiculous fascinator and actually fit in! Summer weddings are great for dressing up, but we always think that as a guest, it’s nice to keep things simple, so we reckon something plain but pretty makes perfect wedding hair (the the guests!). We love curled and wavy summer styles, so find your favourite way to wave with our previous curling how to, and curl all your hair, concentrating on the ends for a more natural look. Next, decide which side you want your fascinator (we like it to be on the side away from our side fringes!), and then taking the very bottom of your hair, sweep it all to the other side, and secure with a grip, and then work your way up until all your curls are pushed to one side. Here, you can play about with them, clip them up a little, back a little, whatever you like, until your happy.

Spray this generously with hairspray and then push your fascinator into the side without all the curls. We love this chic little number from Etsy, perfect with a vintage beaded clutch!

We hope our speedy summer styles have helped out a few of your hair dilemmas this summer – if you have any you’d like to add to our list, just send us a message on our facebook and you could have your ideas here!

Big Hair, Fake Lashes and Muddy Wellies – Kelly Anza’s Festival Survival Guide!

Fashion, How-To No Comments

Since Kelly and Brydie booked their tickets to the Reading Festival this year, all they seem to be able to talk about is what to pack,  how they’re gonna do their hair and how much make-up they reckon they’ll be able to carry – and let’s face it, for the high maintenance girl, living in a tent for 5 days with no access to showers and hair dryers, this can be quite a challenge.  Whilst our guide won’t be able to help this years Glasto-goers, we thought we could at least help everyone attending the rest of this summer’s festivals, so here it is, our quick guide to getting gorgeous in a field!

Before you Leave

Whilst I’m sure your pre-festival planning is usually centred around how many bottles of Rattler you can fit in the boot of your car, remember your poor old hair! Now, whilst you probably spend your life conditioning and straightening your hair, when camping in a muddy field, it’s going to be the last thing you want to think about, so prepare before you go!

The night before you leave, have a pamper session – it’ll be worth it when you get there feeling fresh, not groggy! This is a great opportunity to paint your toe nails (if the sun shines, you’ll be wanting to get the gladiators out) and also a great opportunity to prepare your hair for the worst neglect it’ll ever experience! Now, for once we aren’t going to recommend any deep conditioning treatments, or any super smoothing serums, because when you can’t wash your hair for a week, it’s going to get pretty greasy, and when you’re sleeping in a stinky tent? It’s going to get pretty greasy, pretty fast. The best way to prevent this for as long as possible is to use a deep cleansing shampoo before you go. We love Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Two for deep cleansing, colour safe washing, but if you’r hair is particularly fine, why not book in for a Luxury Wash House Experience? With this we can use the deepest cleansing shampoos and include an exfoliating scalp sugar scrub, perfect for relaxing and cleansing before your big weekend. Finishing this all off with a voluminous blow-dry and soft curls will work wonders – and our lovely Brydie swears by crimping this year, not only a daring and sexy trend but a great way to disguise the fact that it’s not been washed for a few days!

After you’ve cleansed and scrubbed until your hearts content, you’re not going to want to undo all that good by sticked a heavy conditioner on it are you? Whilst we certainly don’t recommend not conditioning it at all, a light conditioner will help prevent the colour from fading and the ends from becoming damaged, so using something like Extra Body Daily Rinse from Paul Mitchell will help soften and protect those delicate lengths!

Other great treats before you leave is to use a really moisterising facial mask – a week of drinking, partying and not eating properly will leave your skin tired and dry, so protect against it with a deep conditioning mask. We love Boots Botanics Conditioning Clay Mask. A steal at under a fiver, it’ll give your skin the boost it needs to be glowing all festival long! And why not treat yourself to a home manicure whilst that’s sinking in? Painting your nails with this season’s coolest colours will ensure you feel on trend and fun, even if the heavens have opened and your new dress is covered by a bin-bag-like poncho! We love George at Asda’s new range of stylish nail varnishes – with a great one-coat thickness and the latest colours, they’re a steal at only £1.50 each! We love the shade Frostbite!

When You’re There

So you’re there, you’ve got your tent up and you’ve made friends with the lovely lads next door - now you just have to establish a quick and easy hair and beauty routine to keep you looking like, well, you! So here’s a run down of things to remember to include, and what we’ve tried, tested and recommend!

When you’re used to your 3-step cleanse tone and moisterise, nothing will quite compare, however, a good pack of face wipes will keep your skin going for a few days! We love Simple’s Kind To Skin Facial Cleansing wipes, as they gently remove make-up and cleanse the skin, no water needed. At £2.99, they aren’t going to render you skint, and can be used day and night for the duration of the trip (not that we expect you to remember to take off your slap before bed!). A great follow up to this is good old Nivea Creme! Created for hard-hitting moisture on the toughest spots, this is great for not only using on your face but on your hands, knees, feet and elbows, ensuring that no shower doesn’t always mean bad skin! It also makes a great base for foundation!

During the first couple of days greasy roots can be expertly covered up with Batiste spray on dry shampoo- now available in a variety of finishes, from silver and gold shimmer for the disco queen inside you, to black and brown for darker haired lovelies, if you haven’t already bought a can, get into Boots quick! And all you bottle blondies out there, the white and shimmer ones are great for covering up any pesky roots if you’ve not had time to pop to a salon! Other great ways to disguise lank hair are back combing – big hair and lots of hairspray will distract from any grease-issues in no time, and it looks sexy and fun! We love our Vogetti Little Wonder backcombing brushes, available from the salon for just £1 95! I cannot stress anough how amazing these little things are! Team your big hair with a generous spritz of Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Finishing spray and we have a match made in Big Hair Heaven!

Admittedly, all hair gets to a point where only a good scrub can bring it back, and unless you’re in a winnebago, this probably won’t be happening any time soon, so don a hat or a kitsch bandana and stop worrying about your hair completely! For trend conscious fashionistas, these gorgeous littletrilbys from Topshop will keep you looking sophisticated and stylish. Or, if you’re feeling a little more rock n roll, why not don a pin-up style headband? If it’s good enough for Marilyn…

Another thing we can’t recommend enough is a big, big pack of baby wipes! The cheapest ones you can find! The skin friendly wipes cleanse face, body and hands, leaving you fresh, clean and moisterised.

Home, Safe and Sound

So you’re home, after a long day of tent packing and travelling, you’re probably more excited for a shower than you’ve ever been in your life – so why not make it an indulgent one? Kick off those wellies, put on some chilled out music, and get pampering…

First thing’s first – take a shower. We’re not being nasty, but let’s face it you’r probably going to need it! This is the perfect opportunity to scrub down and get yourself clean before the real pampering can begin. We like to start off by lathering up a deep cleansing shampoo, like Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Two, and leaving it on for a few minutes – this shampoo is colour friendly, but is great for removing all that nasty product and oil build up which can make your hair look lank and that sometimes your usual shampoos can have problems removing. Whilst that’s working it’s magic, give your body a scrub down too, we love Soap & Glory’s Scrub Actually for a gentle, cleansing exfoliator with a delicious smell. Once you’re clean, smooth and gorgeous, rinse everything off, step out, and prepare for step two.

Next, no pamper session is right without a luxurious bath, so whilst running a nice deep warm bath (not too hot, or it will dry your skin out, which is the opposite of what we intend to do!) take a chance to give some love to those much negelcted locks. Towel dry until your hair is almost completely dry, and then smother on a large dollop of a deep conditioning treatment - for this, we reckon Super Charged Moisteriser by Paul Mitchell is spot on – and when hair is saturated in it, clip it back and forget about it!

Pour in some luxurious bath oil – your tired out skin is probably screaming for some much needed moisture, so we recommend a bath oil or soak like Lazy Cow Bath & Massage Oil, which has a gorgeous relaxing smell as well. Now sit back and relax, take a moment to rub those tired achy feet, cvlose your eyes and chill…

Once you’re done relaxing, use the shower or some clean water to rinse the treatment out of your super silky hair, and wramp yourself up in a warm, soft towel, and revel in the luxury of being clean, pamered and feminine again!

There we have it,  the Kelly Anza guide to the before, during and aftercare of your gorgeous selves this festival season! If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment, feel free to pop in or give us a ring on 01736 361 878.

How-To 1 Comment

It’s the perfect summer image – smooth bronzed skin, long dewy eyelashes and subtly sunkissed golden highlights on long, shiny healthy hair…

Sadly, this image isn’t as easy to acheive as most of us would like. Sure, we can do the bronzed skin with the hundreds of fake tanning products and methods out there, and yes, we can do long dewy eyelashes with the massive range to lengthening, volumising and waterproof mascaras out there – not to mention eyelash extentions. And highlights are a piece of cake too, with salons all over the globe perfecting magazine-worthy colouring techniques and gorgeous natural shades… The biggest problem? Long hair. In an age where the professional working woman wants to look sleek and stylish but have low maintenance hair, bobs have quickly taken over – and many of us regret going for the chop. Because let’s face it, isn’t it easier to just get those dead ends cut off and have something sleek and jaw skimming? And what do you do when your grown-out-bob gets stuck in funny inbetween stage that makes styling impossible? You could get it cut off again, but then you’re stuck in the bob-rut again aren’t you? But the ends are feeling fried.. If these thoughts have crossed your mind when growing out your style, then you’re reading the right article, because here is the Kelly Anza Guide to Growing Gorgeous Lengths!

The main thing to focus on after making the decision to grow your hair, is keeping it healthy. If your hair become damaged, dry or brittle, you’ll find that whilst it will grow, the ends will become straggly and thin, and your hair will be left needing several inches off to get it looking healthy again. So, first thing’s first, go to see your stylist, tell her what your aiming for, and book in your next years worth of hair appointments. Whether you like it trimmed every 6 weeks or 8, getting a regular tidy up will mean the ends of your hair stay blunt and healthy, and it’ll stay feeling thick and strong, and when you book in several appointments at a time, it’ll mean they work their way into your routine, and you’ll have plenty of time to arrange time of work, babysitters or transport to get to your appointments.

Once you have organised your next few appointments, work out a hair care routine to suit your hair. Again, your usual hair stylist will be a great person to ask about this, as she will have had regular contact with your hair, know your routine, and know what kind of products it will need. For example, if you hair fine hair that gets greasy quickly, an extra body shampoo and conditioner is great, but you ill also need to use a Hair Repair treatment weekly to stop your hair from drying out, or if you have lightened hair that is subject to heat styling on a regular basis, strengthening products will help work some of the protein hair loses when coloured or straightened often back into the hair. Always use a conditioner, even if you have very fine hair, and always use an intensive treatment at least once a week to maintain the condition.

At first growing your hair can go great – with particularly short styles, you can see growth in a couple of weeks, and you’ll feel great. Until, it gets long enough that your styling routine’s going to have to change. And your fringe is getting into your eyes. And the backs looking a bit like a mullet… Do not panic! The key to this is perseverance. If your gorwing your cropped cut out, yes, it will take a long time to get it past your shoulders, but instead of suffering, why not gradually get it trimmed into a bob first? The back will inevitably grow down faster, so why not just get that trimmed until the sides catch up? This will help stop you feeling like your hair is lacking style. Another great way to give your hair some style in those funny inbetween stages is to get some nice hairbands and clips. Gorgeous elasticated headbands are great for keeping grown out styles out of your eyes, and add a little boho chic to your look! At the end of the day, sometimes you will have weeks when you hate your hair, but the key word is: perseverance. The only way to get your hair long and gorgeous is to get past these stages, so put up with it and carry on!

Now you have everything you need to keep you and your hair happy on the outside, it’s time to start focusing on keeping it happy from the inside. This sounds cheesey and we know you hear it all the time, but it’s true what they say – healthy lifestyle = healthy hair. Regular exercise will not only keep your budy slim and toned and your skin clear, but it will help hair grow healthily, and keep it shiny and strong. Any exercise that gets your heart rate up will mean improved circulation, which will help your hair grow faster too, but stimulating the follicles on your scalp! As well as exercise, lots of protein rich foods and fruit and vege will help improve the condition and growing rate of your hair – and remember, not only are smoking and drinking bad for you, but they will also prevent alot of goodness your hair needs from getting to it.

If none of this is quite enough and you’re looking for a faster way to grow your hair, why not conider clip-in extensions? They’re a great way to add length and body in minutes, and they’re cheaper and easier than bonded ones. Our favourite ones are from FoxyLocksExtensions.com – they’re thick smooth shiny and ethically sourced, and great value for money. Once ordereds, pop into the salon for a consultation and we’d be happy to arrange an appointment to have your extensions cut into your hair so they look like they’ve grown from your own head, or coloured to match your hair. They’re quick and easy, and won’t damage your hair.

If you have any questions about anything we’ve mentioned, or you would like to book an appointment, please ring 01736 361 878, or pop in to our little salon on Parade Street, Penzance, today!

Kelly Anza loves… Nicola Roberts!

How-To No Comments

For this How To, we decided to give one of the quieter members of Girls Aloud a bit of the limelight. Nicola Roberts might now be known for her heavy partying, her celebrity husband or her mouthy attitude, but she has won the hearts of all red head girls in the country this last few years, for embracing her beautiful natural colouring and making the most of it, which is what makes her the perfect Kelly Anza hair icon!
Since winning a place in pop band Girls Aloud on Reality TV Show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. She has since made 5 studeio albums with the band, and has made a number of television appearances with them. In 2008 she also released her own make-up range, ‘Dainty Doll’ which, despite being discontinued in 2009, is rumoured to be making it back in to shops later this year. But between all this Ms Roberts still manages to look classically stylish like a true English Rose.
Whilst not many girls are blessed with those fiery red locks and porcelain skin, there are a few ways in which even you darker skinned girlies can copy Nicola’s look, and here’s how!

 If you’re…

  •  Naturally Dark – Whilst it’d be unflattering and slightly odd looking to go Nicola’s bright coppery hue, it can be really easy to work some warmer tones into your hair. If you life something quite natural and flattering, a deep red-brown or golden-brown gloss colour will give your dark lengths a wamer tone and alot of shine! Alternatively, if you don’t mind standing out in a crowd, some deep red sections in the underneath layers of your hair can brighten up your look without straying away from your natural dark – and so, keeping the look very flattering for your natural skintone.
  •  Mousey or fair - With mousey and fair hair colours, it really depends on your skintone for trying out Nicola’s colour. If you have fairly tanned or dark skin, it is probably best to go for a deeper reddish tone, like a coppery brown with some pretty golden highlights. This will be flattering for your skin tone and easier for mousey girls to keep up with! However, if you’re skin is fair or your hair is pale, you can go for Nicola’s fiery copper! Whilst it’s still best for youto chat withyour stylist about what suits you best, copper, red and golden tones can work perfectly for your skintone, it’s just about finding the right ones for you!
  • Red Haired - Lucky girl! You’re already almost there, as you’re colouring will likely be very similar to Nicola’s natural shade. However, to enhance your gorgeous fiery locks like Nicola does, why not book in for an InkWorks treatment, where we’ll mix a coppery red colour up, personailsed to you, to add brighter colour and gorgeus shine to your hair? Or even a PM Shines Semi Permanent colour treatment. Its all about brightening up what you already have – so the more orange, the better! Don’t be afraid!
When considering a cut to go with your new colour, we would usually suggest consulting your stylist, having a chat about your lifestyle and your daily routine to see if your chosen style will suit you. However, the great thing about Nicola Robert’s sleek bob is that it will suit any kind of hair! If you find your longer hair is beginning to feel limp and dull, a good blunt cut will throw some life back into it and give it some body – and its long enough to tie up, and customise with a fringe. Side parting kind of girl? A long heavy side fringe will vamp up this sexy style in seconds. Want something a bit more daring? Blunt cut bangs will give this look a modern edge – take them up an inch for a vintage look Bettie Page would be proud of! With longer layers it can be used to flatter thick hair and thicken flat hair. A long bob sounds boring but it’s the world’s most flexible haircut! And if you’re unsure about the length, you can take it up – recenty Ms Roberts stepped out with a cool, punky jaw length bob, perfect for growing out cropped styles and as an inbetween style for girls thinking about going for the crop.

To get this gorgeous body and style like Nicola,  simply work some Extra Body Sculpting Foam by Paul Mitchell into your hair from roots to tips when wet, and then blowdry on a high heat with a large round brush in small sections, focusing on getting height in at the roots and then a good flick under at the ends. Finish off with a spritz of Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Light hairspray, and voila, perfect style, shine and volume, the Nicola Roberts way!

To complete the look, think flawless skin (MAC Studio Fix foundation is a MUST!), vampy lashes (Eyelure’s Girls Aloud collection is in New Looks, Boots and Superdrugs across the country) and peachy pink lips (try Lip Stick in Vintage from Topshop’s new make-up range)!

Don’t be the Underdog – The New Undercut, the Kelly Anza way!

How-To No Comments

Recently, hundreds of celebs have not only been dressing down in ripped jeans and biker jackets, but they’ve also been taking the grungy look a step further in their hair – the buzzcut. From Hollywood Divas to IT girls, this style is in, and it’s here to stay (until it grows out..)!

Ths style is sexy, daring and cool, but be warned, take the suggestion of an undercut with a pinch of salt, because if you get it done and you hate it, it’s going to take a long time to grow out, so tread carefully with this kind of style. However, if you love it, it does take some upkeep! Depending on how short your buzzed section is and how short you like it, you will need to keep getting it trimmed as often as every 3 weeks! It might appear carefree and cool, but remember, celebrity shavers like Rhianna have personal stylists with them 24/7 – you do not! But don’t let the maintenance put you off! If you’re looking for a stunning style to shock, this could be perfect for you.

Feeling super daring? Ever thought about completely going for the chop? As sported by model Amber Rose, Beyonce’s sister Solange and now Agyness Deyn, super short styles are in. These are great if you already have a crop and want something a little different without growing your hair out. If you’re thinking of taking inspiration from these styles, remember that it’s not only your lifestyle you need to consider – these kind of super short cuts reveal your entire face, so if you’re a little underconfident or hide behind a fringe, don’t go for the buzz, you’ll only be left waiting for it to grow out! Great for girls with big eyes and elfin, feminine faces, this style will balance up your delicate features and give your style some oomph.

If you’re looking for something a little easier to pull off but just as daring as the full buzzcut, why not go for a slightly punkier look and have a section down each side shaved – much like a mohawk but less scary! R n B singers Kelis and Rhianna both stepped out recently sporting this edgey look, and won over the hearts of fashionistas everwhere as they combined their rebellious side with height, colour and cascading curls. However, this look is not just reserved for the shorter haired girlies! If you’ve got longer lengthed locks, why not try shaved sections just above each ear blending down into the nape – this look is gorgeous teamed with long straight lengths and a sky high quiff!

Longer hair also looks great with just one shaved section on the side – as sported by Alice Dellal and Sugababes singer Amelle Berrabah, this style can be used to look punky or sexy, and it’s becoming increasingly mainstream as girls and women decide to go for the chop and change their look. This is one of the easier undercut styles to go for because you can change the size of your shaven section according to how daring you are, and by changing your parting smaller sections are easy to hide – perfect for anyone still in school or with a strict work dress code.

Kelly Anza loves… George Lamb!

How-To No Comments
Whilst in the salon we mostly focus on women’s styles, there’s always an increasing number of men coming in asking us what we think is cool, what would suit them and how to care for their hair. So for this how-to we’re going to focus on an effortlessly stylish celeb man’s hair, and give you gents out there a few hints and tips on how to get his look. And who better to base our first Men’s How To on than the presenter of Celebrity Scissorhands, George Lamb.

The son of actor Larry Lamb, George has made himself a household name by presenting numerous BBC3 programmes including Young Butcher of the Year and The Restaurant. He also began his career by managing the band Audio Bullys and world reknowned singer Lily Allen before she got a record deal. Now presenting his own radio show, he still does television work but stays mainly out of the spotlight – what dosen;t stay out of the spotlight for long, however, is his style.

Recently, Lamb caused a stir when be began to appear on TV with ‘grey highlights’. Whilst there’s speculation to whether or not they’re real, we think they look very stylish and quite sexy! If you have found a few grey hairs around your hairline, and would like to enhance them, there’s a couple of things you can do. Firstly, choose a cut and style that will help to show them off. Often, Lamb pushes his hair back or wears it in a vintage-style side parting. Great for guys with an edgey, smart or vintage style of dress, a sleek side parting will show off that grey and flatter almost any face shape. When you see your stylist, tell them the look your going for, and she’ll be able to give you a cut to enhance what you have. Alternatively, if you’re lucky enough to not have any grey, why not ask your stylist for a few carefully placed highlights? Once lifted, these subtle sections of hair can be toned and given that silver look. But watch out, this can be high maintenance and mean you will need to come back every now and then to have any regrowth covered, so steer clear of this look if you don’t want to spend much time in the salon!

If you’d like to book in for a cut or a quick colour and cut, just ring 01736 361 878 or pop in today for a free consultation!

Indulge your Sweet Tooth with Candyfloss Locks..

How-To No Comments

Done are the days of poker straight hair in natural, neutral tones, of hair blowdried into shiny bouffants and smoothed into slick styles. Like the fashion strutting down the runways, hair has given up on neat and shiny and perfect, so put away that serum, get rid of those straighteners, and say hello to sickly sweet styles. Up until now, the hair on the catwalks has been more chocolate praline than candyfloss. Natural, smooth, sweet, and grown up, but fashion has thrown it’s toys out of the pram and resorted to childlike pastels, candyfloss and cupcakes, and here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we think this hair rebellion is for the better.

Candyfloss hair first showed it’s rebellious little face a couple of years ago, but not until now has it pushed it’s way onto the high street. Think big, sculpted styles, backcombed and fluffy and messy, low maintenance and high fashion. And for colour? Think pastel pinks and blue hues peeping through bleach blonde hair, or pale ashy browns with grey-blonde highlights. The Blue Rinse is back, and you’ll be seeing it on girls of all ages this summer.

The Texture

Think frizzy, fluffy and messy, this is all about big volume and no effort. Naturally a curly girlys? Brush it out, backcomb it, and hairspray it. This is all about height, so why not try a cheeky little frizzy quiff or if your hair is long, pile it all on top of your head, for an easy, glam updo – why not add a diamante barrette to pretty it up? If your hair is straight or wavy, you have two options – make the most of your straight hair and just backcomb it all over, clip it all up, and let locks of your hair fall down, creating a more casual look – or put some curls in (rag rollers and bendy rollers are the best for getting some curl in at the roots for volume) and then brush them out to separate them. And don’t forget, this look is all about being creative, tonnes of hairspray, hair grips and creating a size and shape you feel comfortable with.

The Colour

Whilst this look works for any hair colour, at the moment we’re loving platinum blonde hair with pastel highlights and OAP style blue rinses. It might not sound cool, but everyone from Kelly Osborne to Ashley Olsen is trying it – and we think they look incredible. Whether your style is pink and pretty or pretty in punk, there’s a candyfloss colour to suit you. If you’re going for summer dresses and lavender nails this summer, why not have some almost-white pastel pink and purple streaks through the underneath layers of your hair? Not only is this keeping with your fresh, summerly look, but it will show off your haircut and reflect your style without being too much. Are you more of a vintage band shirt and hotpants kinda girl? Why not go for the purple rinse – lavender hair and biker boots ooze attitude with a hint of girly charm. Here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we’re offering a chance for our clients to upgrade their service to include InkWorks – for as little as £10 you too could have candyfloss colour hair, just ask upon booking your next appointment!

The Make-Up

For this look to really pop, you need the right make-up. For daytime, why not think smudgey pastel purple eyes (we’re loving Revlon’s Soft On The Eyes pallete!) and healthy pink cheeks, with just a slick of clear lipgloss? Remember, you’re looking for soft, feminine and pretty, so heavy eyeliner is a no-no – but wide eyes are key, so curl eyelashes and use a couple of coats of Maybelline Great Lash mascara, making sure eyelashes look separated and natural, but big and doll-like. To dress this look up a little for nighttime, why not go for smokey black eyes and a pastel lipstick – the runways have been showing models with anything from lavender lipstick to coral-orange, but for a slightly less daring look, we love a good pink matte lipstick, teamed with flawless skin and subtle smokey eyes. Try MAC’s Bombshell lipstick for a pretty in pink look that’s feminine and sexy. And to complete the look, think pastel nails of every colour – we’re loving varnishes by Nails Inc for great lasting colours. Why not try shade South Molton Street?

Turn Up The Volume… Get Big Hair at Home!

How-To No Comments

Polished and beehived or wild and backcombed, big hair is back, and it’s back with a vengeance. Wiith everyone from Cheryl Cole to Angelina Jolie, and on catwalks the world over, big hair has pushed it’s way back into fashion, and thank god – it’s sexier, more flattering and easier than poker straight hair, and you don’t need the latest GHDs to do it! Whether you’re vibing sexy secretary or festival chic this summer, there’s a voluptuous ‘do to suit you.

The Big Fatty ToolBox

For big hair, you don’t need hundreds of tools and products, just a little bit of help here and there and a bit of know-how. However, there are a few essentials to add to your kit…

Volumising Mousse – This is a girls best friend, and here in the salon, the Kelly Anza team swear by it. Whilst any mousse will do, one that adds body to the hair with a light hold will work best – we love Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Sculpting foam. This will give flat, limp haired girls a boost and it will give hold and texture to thicker and more unruly hair.

Root Spray – Though root spray is not an essential, for more gravity defying styles it’s definately a nessecity. Root spray is a great product to use to give hair a little extra lift without the hard work – just spray close to the roots, blow dry and go! By adding extra hold onto the roots of the hair it can give the impression of thicker hair in seconds. Paul Mitchell’s Root Boost is great, but there are other alternatives out there.

Fine Toothed Comb – Easier to get hold of than a professional teasing brush, this will help you smooth out the parts you want sleek and backcomb the parts your want big. Any comb is good for this but don’t worry, if you haven’t a comb a hairbrush will do – just need to be a little more gentle with the hair!

Strong Hold Hairspray – An essential for all styles, a good quality strong hold hairspray will ensure your locks don’t fall flat, and will keep some good backcombing in for days on end – because lets face it, who has time to do their hair everyday?! We recommend Freeze and Shine Super Spray by Paul Mitchell, it never fails to keep our hair big, but for a slightly softer hold, try Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Finishing Spray – great for holding teased hair and adding texture.

Curls Aloud

If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, you’re a lucky girl! With natural movement in your hair, it’s easier for you than for most girls to achieve volume in your style – it’s just knowing how to start! If your hair is not curly, don’t fret, you can still achieve this look at home, just start curling your hair (guide to curling can be found on our how-to menu).

To begin, was your hair with your usual shampoo and conditioner, however fine haired girlies should try to use something volumising (we’re loving Paul Mitchell’s Lemon Sage range, coming soon to Kelly Anza Hair Design), but no matter what your hair’s like, don’t overload on conditioner, we’re looking for light and bouncy, not heavy and weighed down. Once washed, towel dry your hair until most of the moisture is out, and if your hair is particularly tangly, comb it through, but don’t brush it flat to your head – this will make it dry flat to your scalp. Next, apply your volumising mousse – mostly to the ends but don’t neglect the midlengths of your hair – and your root spray around your crown where you need the most height. Now, with the next step it’s best to dry your hair how you find works for you. If your hair is particularly curly, tipping your head upside down and using a diffuser will ensure your curls don’t frizz but you still get that rootlift, however if your hair is wavy or straight, blast it off until completely dry, pointing the dryer away from your root, and then curl your hair using your method of choice!

Okay, so now your hair is totally dry and curly, the styling can be done! The best way to add more body at the root is simply by backcombing – pick up a section of hair, and just comb your hair from about 3 inches from your scalp toward the root of your hair. This will create little knots whcih will help add a bit of oomph to the style. Do this all over and then run your fingers through your hair to break up those curls. Now your hair should be looking sexy and wild, but if you are still looking to make those curls a bit more catwalk and daring, brush them! Most of the time we strive to make curls look separated and perfect, but sometimes what you need is a bit of a more untamed look, so get your comb and gently tease the curls out, so they separate out, and backcomb slightly, this will give a tonne more oomph and paired with a LBD and some killer cat-eye liner, will have all eyes on you.

Oh Do Beehive

Beehives can be the ultimate sign of retro sophistication, but don’t wrong, and you can find yourself feeling more like Amy Winhouse than Bridget Bardot. So here’s a quite quide to getting that sleek volume, and how you can customise it to suit you!

When washing your hair, more curly and wavy haired girs should go for a smoothing shampoo and conditioner, we love Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny range, whereas straight haired girls should use either their normal routine or a volumising hair care range. Once washed, towel dry the hair and lightly comb into place – if you have a fringe, comb that smooth and dry and style as you usually do, and use your rootspray close to the scalp from the crown forward – you’re going to be looking for alot of rootlift so keep this in mind! Rough dry your hair until around 50% dry, and then using a large round brush, dry hair from the scalp, curving it away from your face. This takes some practice but after a while you should be able to acheive a look that is smooth and shiny, but with a lot of rootlift. Do this until all your hair is dry – if your struggling with the back section, finger dry that and focus on the top, as this is hat will really make the style.

Once hair is completely dry, decide how you want the rest of the style to look – long tousled curls look great when going out, but a straight, low ponytail can look very sleek and editorial. If you’re wanting curls, use a heated styling product to curl all the ends of the hair – we think this looks great with messy GHD curls, but it’s upto you. If your going for a low sleep ponytail, straighten the ends your hair, but be careful to avoid the top – this will ruin your voluminous blowdry! Once the ends are sorted, focus back on the beehive section of your hair. Now some girls will find that the blowdry has given them sufficient body, but if this is not the case, section of the front of your hair and clip forward (you will later bring this over the rest to keep the look smooth and tidy). Next, take your trusty comb and go to town on that top section of hair. Backcomb until your hearts content, and don’t fret – none of this will be visible at the end. Once you are satisfied, bring that front section back over your knotted area, and smooth down over it, without flattening any of the body. Spray generously with your favourite hairspray, and then, using kirby grips, fasten the hair over at the back of your head. If you are wearing your hair down, you will find that you are good to go – a pretty clip or barrette can dress up this look and cover and grips at the back that you can still see, and a wide hairband looks great across the front. However, if you are looking for a more office friendly look, secure hair at the nape of the neck with a snag-free elastic, and using a section of hair from the ponytail, wrap around the elastic and grip underneath, for a sleek, sophistiated easy style. Cover in hairspray, smooth out any visible knots, and voila! Sixties chic!

Get Quiffed

Undone and rebellious, or cutesy and girly, quiffs are the ultimate no fuss style – they keep your hair out of your eyes, and they can be as high or as big as you like. Often used to represent 50s pin up chic, the quiff has been copied by girls the world over, from models, to rockstars, to movie starlets… to you!

Quiffs are best done of second day hair, but if your have just washed it, use a little styling cream (Paul Mitchell’s Fast Form does the jopb for us!) to stop the hair being so slippy. Now, to start off, section off the part of your hair you want in your quiff, and tie the rest back. For this section, we reckon about about mid eyebrow to mid eyebrow is the best width, but it’s upto you. Now, depending on the look your going for, there’s a couple of different ways to get the height and shape how you want it. If you’re looking for something that’s quick, easy, and work or school friendly, the best thing to do is grab your entire quiff section, twist the ends and grip down, pushing it forward slightly for a little more height. This is great for making a simple ponytail that little bit more special. If your looking for something that is a much bigger and a bit more rock and roll, try taking about a 1cm section from the back of the quiff section, and backcombing it, then, once it’s backcombed to your satisfaction (the more you backcomb, the bigger the quiff), spray the root with hairspray. Work your way towards the front, but leave the very front section smooth. Now you’ll look a bit like you’re trying to recreate the punk era, but don’t panic, just bring the front section over the rest, using your comb to smooth any lumps and bumps, and grip into place. Spray generously with more hairspray and voila! A big fat quiff to last the sweatiest gigs and the wildest of clubs.

There you have it, a quick rundown of the best ways to go maximum capacity on your style – and remember, if you’re still struggling at home, we are on hand to make you look fabulous – just phone up and book today! 01736 361 878

Bombshell – The Ultimate Blonding Handbook

How-To No Comments
Naturally flawless light blonde hair is a beautiful rarity, which is why so many men and women spend so much time and money into acheiving this sunkissed style. However, no matter how much money or time you have, it can still be difficult to acheive the look you want. So here’s a quick guide for blondes who want to keep their locks looking good!

Natural Blondes

The envy of bottle blondes everywhere, natural blondes are blessed, however, sometimes, no matter how well you condition and look after your hair, your colour can often be left looking dull or brassy, even if colour has never touched it. Whilst this is annoying, it can be fixed without using harsh colours or chemicals. If your hair is looking brassy, try using a purple toned shampoo (we love Paul Mitchell’s Platinum Blonde Shampoo) or conditioner to neutralise yellow tones, or if it needs something a little more powerful, why not book in a toning treatment with your stylist? At Kelly Anza Hair Design we offer Flash Finish toning treatments personalised to suit your hair, which can be applied, finished and then blowdried in an hour – perfect during your lunchbreak. However, if the problem is your golden locks looking dull and flat, your usual stylist or our newly qualified or trainee stylists can put one of our PM Shine gloss colours on. These are a asemi permanant colour with a difference – as they contain no harsh chemicals they are more like a treatment than a colour and add a hint of colour and gorgeous shine to ther dullest of blondes – perfect for quickly and easily brightening up your blonde! The above treatments can be added on to your usual regular trim or blowdry, just ask when booking your next appointment!

Bleached, Coloured or Highlighted Blondes

If you fit under this category, I bet you’re dedicated to the blonde! Coloured blonde hair can be hell to keep looking gorgeous, especially if your regrowth is natrually dark but don’t panic – there are loads of ways you can keep your blonde fresh, healthy and gorgeous! One of our very best tips to keep roots at bay between colours is good old trusty dry shampoo – or baby powder works just as well! When your roots are coming through, just spray on some dry shampoo and rub in – this is especially good for bleach blondes, the whiteness of the powder will blend in any roots – Kelly swears by this, and almost always has a bottle of talc in her bag! If you’re having the problem of your blonde looking brassy or dull, you can follow our tips above for Natural Blondes, but sometimes coloured hair needs something a little stronger, and a little bit more TLC. If your hair is particularly brassy or in bad conition, the best thing to do is pop in for a consultation with your stylist, who can go over some options with you for colour and give you some hints and tips to prevent it getting like that again. A great tip is to leave on purple toned shampoos and conditioners for at least 5 minutes – this will give your hair time to really soak up all the violet goodness. If you find your hair is brittle and dry from heat and colouring, invest in some strengthening treatmeants for your hair. These usually contain protein to releplenish what your hair has lost over time. We love Paul Mitchell’s strength range, especially the Super Strong Liquid Treatment, for quick, easy and daily strength. If you love bleach blonde white hair and usually have your regrowth painted on, but hate that solid line of roots, why not switch to subtle highlights to give you more control over your look, and less obvious regrowth when it come through?

Celebrity Blondes

Blonde hair can be an ultimate sign of glamour and sophistication, and yet also a sign of a fun loving party girl.. which is why so many celebrities make the big choice to lighten up. From old school movie icons to IT girls to rock stars, they’ve all had a go – here’s a selection of our favourite inspirational celeb looks!

Which is why we have now started offering a luxury upgrade to be added to any of our services. The Paul Mitchell Wash House Experience.

The Wash House Experience is a chance to relax and unwind in our new second floor salon, away from the hustle and bustle of the main floor. Here one of our team will talk the service through with you, discuss your hair’s needs, and have a chance to settle on the kind of products to be used.

The service begins with a colour friendly cleansing treatment which will remove any product  or oils from the hair. We will then use the hair care range that we discussed at the beginning to provide you with a relaxing shampoo head and neck massage. Using an intensive treatment to restore your hair’s natural beauty and shine, we will repeat this massage, finishing with a hot towel to help the hair soak up all the nutrients from this luxurious treatment. We will then run a conditioner through the hair, and to add shine and improve manageability.

This treatment is perfect for making a cut or a blow dry a little more special or for adding onto a colour service to repair and protect the hair after being exposed to colour. It can be customised to include a unique and exfoliating scalp scrub with raw brown sugar, or with an envigorating and shine enhancing sparkling water rinse.  Plus, at the end of your service you will recieve a free Take Home Kit worth upto £15 RRP, to ensure your hair stays salon gorgeous.

The Kelly Anza Team’s Tricks of the Trade!

How-To No Comments
In hairdressing there’s hundreds of little tips and tricks that can help you acheive gorgeous hair all the time. And we don’t mean the obvious things, like conditioner making it soft! There are hundreds of obscure little tricks which we hairdressers often take for granted, and forget to pass on to our clients. So here we have it, a quick rundown of our best kept secrets to Photo Shoot Fabulous hair, all the time.

Blondes will often find, when exposed to chlorinated pools or hard water, their blonde can begin to take on a greenish tinge… It’s not pretty, we know, but other than not gettng your hair wet, sometimes it’s close to unpreventable. But, there is a cure! When you wash your hair, run some ketchup through it or rinse it with tomato juice. I know it sounds gross! But honestly, this will restore the gorgeous neutral blonde shine your hair had when it was fresh out of the salon. And what’s even better? It’s cheap!I bet you blonde ladies also have big problems with roots don’t you? And the worst bit is, the blonder your highlights, the darker you’re roots will look. I bet you also find your roots get greasier quicker than your blonde… This is simply because the blonde will be a lot drier than your regrowth. So, to tide you over until your next hair was and appointment, sprinkle a little bit of talc baby powder into the roots of your hair and rub in – the talc will soak up the oils in your hair, so it won’t look as greasy, and the whiteness will disguise your roots!

Heavy blunt fringes are about as fashion forward and as sexy as it gets, right? Well yes, they are, until your head gets a little sweaty and they begin to part and look strandy… Don’t worry! This is bound to happen, but the best way to stop it parting is to back comb it! And don’t worry, it won’t be sticking in the air!! Simply clip the top part of your fringe up, and with the very underneath layer, use a brush or fine toothed comb to gently tease little knots into it. Work your way up the fringe until each fine layer has lots of little knots. Brush over the top layer to create to smooth surface layer and then spritz with a little hairspray. Viola! A sexy heavy blunt fringe that’s going to stay that way.

So it’s sunday night, you’ve decided to have a long luxurious shower, scrub yourself smooth, put a lovely deep conditioni- wait. You’ve run out of your favourite conditioner, and no where is open to get some more… Don’t panic! There are always plenty of things around the house that can smooth your locks out. The easiest to get hold of is probably mayonnaise. Just work a medium sized dollop through the ends of your hair for a few minutes and rinse! The mayonnaise is packed full of oils which will moisterize your hair, but it is also made with egg which will help add shine. If your hair is particularly unruly, try running a few teaspoons of olive oil through the ends of your hair. This intensive moisteriser will pack loads of moisture in and give damaged locks an unbeatable shine – however, this one is not for the fine or floppy haired! Olive oil can make finer hair greasy so avoid putting it on the roots and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Last but not least, for a fruity fix, simple mash half an avocado and mix with a spoon full of olive oil, and you have yourself a luxury fruity hair mask. Just run through to the ends of your hair, wrap in a hot towel, and let the rejuvenating avocado oils work their magic. Plus, avocado is a great moisteriser for your skin too, half a mashed up avocado (minus the olive oil) makes a great face mask!

Whilst it isn’t strictly a hair secret, one of the worst stains to get out it hair colour or bleach. Speaking from experiance, we know how a “small smear of colour” can ruin an entire dress!! So next time you get some colour or bleach on your clothes, douse the area in hairspray, until it’s soaking, and then was as usual. Providing you prayed it soon enough, the hairspray should have stopped the bleach or colour developing, and there for stopped it staining your clothes!

So, your hair used to be bright blonde and fabulous, and when you saw the latest Megan Fox film, you decided sultry dark locks were the way forward. Then you went and bought a chocolate brown home dye, left it on a bit too long, and your once healthy blonde locks are now dry, ratty and black. Or maybe you just thought you’ve give bright blue a try, and your hair has faded to a nice off-green colour…The best thing to do to strip the very worst of your colour out without bleaching or harming your hair is to start doing some intensive cleansing shampoos. The things to use to strip colour are washing up liquid, head and shoulders, and, believe it or not, baby shampoo. These all have certain ingrediants in which will fade colour, so whilst it won’t return you to your original colour, it’ll take the harshness off and make it easier to fix in salon. But please remember to keep deep conditioning your hair inbetween using these shampoos!

If you’ve got any more to add to our list, please let us know via our email: salon@kellyanza.com. or send us a message on facebook!

The Big Bang Theory.. Everything You Need to Know about Fringes!

How-To 1 Comment

Long hair, short hair, curly hair, straight hair – the easist and most fun way to switch your style up is a fringe! Be it subtle layers around the face, or above-eyebrow length blunt bangs, a fringe can transform your style, with minimum effort. So many people say to us “I need a change but I’m happy with my length and my colour, what can i do!?” and honestly, the easiest thing to do is simply get a fringe!

There are as many different types of fringe as there are different hairstyles, and there is one out there to suit everyone’s face shape, hair type and lifestyle – the only problem is… Which one will suit me!? So here we have it, the ultimate fringe guide!

If your face is…

Round steer clear of short blunt fringes, these can emphasise a round face. Instead go for longe fringes in side swept styles, as these can add length and structure to a round face!

Heart Shaped you can rock much shorter, edgier fringes – why not go wild and go for something short and angled!? But watch our – anything too heavy or long could swamp your face and leave you looking like your hiding behind your hair.

Oval you are a very very lucky lady – the chances are you’ll be able to pull of any kind of fringe, but look out for anything too heavy on the face, you could end up hiding your gorgeous features behind your hair!

Long and the length is in your forehead, try a long eyebrow skimming blunt fringe – it’ll make you look so much more feminine! However, if your forehead is small, go for longe layers around the face as a fringe will emphasise the length of your face.

Square, softer, more wispy fringes will soften your jawline. shorter, side swept fringes look great with shorter cuts, and longer, wispy finges look good on long styles – avoid heavy, blunt fringes, as these can look too sharp.

So now you know what you can pull off, think about your hair care routine before you rush into anything. Are you a slave to the GHDs and a lover of styling your hair? Then go for something edgey and dramatic – if you already spend time styling your hair, a higher-maintenence fringe will work for you! Short, straight blunt… Try it out! Do you loathe spending time faffing about in the mirror and would rather get on with things? Try some longer layers around your face or a long side swept fringe that you can comb into place and it’s done.

How to Style your Fringe like a Star!

We recommend having a good chat with your stylist about different style of fringes and your lifestyle and routine, as theres nothing worse than getting somethign high maintenence when you don’t style your hair – it will never look like it did in the salon! And whilst your stylist can show you how to style your fringe, we know sometimes a little extra help is needed, so here’s a quick aftercare guide for your bangs!

Long Sweepy Fringes
Depending on your hair type, long sweepy fringes can require a lot of work but some people will find their hair just wants to fall to the side. If your not one of those lucky ladies, don’t fret! A week or so of hair training will get your bangs into shape. I bet your probably sat at home thinking ‘Training my hair?! You bunch of crazies!’ but we promise it will work! Often, when you start trying to comb your hair somewhere other than where it usually parts, it will start lifting up and trying to go back to where it’s used to – to train your fringe not to do this, simply comb it where you want it to go when it’s soaking wet everytime you wash your hair, and then blowdry it in this direction. If you have a cowlick your hair might resist a little more, but if it does just clip it over to the side you want it to go whilst doing your make-up and give it a little spritz of hairspray and soon you’ll find your fringe will sweep over easily! Girls with a little bit of subtle wave will probably find their’s sweeps over easier, but if your hair is particularly straight, try using a medium-sized round blowdrying brush to help give it that little bend.

Sharp Blunt Fringes
These gorgeous, style-forward bangs can be very easy or slightly harder to style, depending on your hair type, but not to fret, they’re never too hard to get looking gorgeous. Straight hairs girlies will find that brushing them forward and blasting with a hairdryer will often be enough, but sometimes the help of a medium round brush or a pair of straighteners will be required to smooth out wavier and curly hair. Just remember when using straighteners to gently bend the fringe under so that it isn’t too poker straight and harsh!

Long Feathery Layers
If you’ve opted out of the fringe and instead for longer, face framing layers, then remember that face framing is what they’re there for, and so don’t let those locks just hang there! Make the most of that perfect style – for a sexy look, try using a brush to blowdry those layers under slightly so that they curl into your cheekbones and enhance your bone structure. Or, if you’re a bit more daring, how about using a pair of straighteners to flick and curl them away from your face for an edgier look, this looks great teamed with loose, messy curls!

Still undecided? Why not check out some of these tress transforming fringes…

Katy Perry!

When Katy Perry recently stepped out with her new Bettie Page style fringe, she changed her style from cute and playful to sexy and vamp in one move. Her fringe before was a simple long fringe that she swept to the side, and her new fringe it a much shorted, heavier fringe, great for girls with great cheekbones and tonnes of personality.

Lady GaGa

If you’ve already taken the plunge and gone for blunt bangs, everyone’s favourite Fashionista Lady Gaga here shows that by sweeping your fringe to the side, you can soften up your look and go for a more Hollywood Chic look without getting any more cut off.

Gwen Stefani!

Despite constantly exploring her sense of style, Gwen knows how a fringe can completely change your style. In her No Doubt days, Gwen Stefani rarely sported a fringe, often opting for longer feathered layers. However, on the launch of her Great Escape album, the singer cut her platinum locks into a blunt fringe, and showed a more stylish conservative side of fashion. But, despite this sharp, sexy change, Gwen still knows how to show her individuality and often experiments with sexy quiffs.

You Spin Me Right Round – The Kelly Anza guide to Curling and Texture

How-To No Comments

Curls can be spontaneous, curls can be sexy, curls can be cool. But for some reason a lot of you girlies are still having problems creating them in your own hair, which is why we decided to give a quick guide on the ‘how to’ and ‘what to use’ on curling.

Curling with Straighteners
This is probably one of the easiest and quickest ways of curling your hair – once you know how. It’s best to use a medium barreled straightener. The new GHDs are designed with a rounder barrel for curling, but don’t run out and replace yours – the old ones work just as well! Always work with dry hair when doing this, and use a firm hold hairspray after to keep the curls looking fresh. Okay, so now we know what we’re using, you’re probably wanting to know what to do. Well, take a small section of hair, we’d say about the thickness of your thumb, but bigger or smaller is up to you – experiment, the size will change the overall look. Now, clamp the straighteners onto the hair near the roots, as you would if you were straightening, then literally just twist the straightener so that as you pull the straightener down the section of hair, after the hair as been through the irons it is curling around the outside. Just pull the straightener down the hair in this way, and let it go, and you should have a curl. If you want a tighter curl, go slower, if you want a looser, more natural curl, go faster. This all sounds very complicated, I know, but I’ve included a couple of great videos at the bottom to show you how. And honestly, if you aren’t very good when you start, just practice. It’s easier to practice on others, but any practice will do – it get’s easier, I promise!

Curling Tongs and Wands
This is an easy but time consuming way to curl hair – but with a good curling wand, your curls can last all day. A curling wand is just a slightly tapered cylinder made of the same material as the plates on hair staighteners. It heats up just like them. To curl hair with one of these, simply wrap a strand of the hair around the hot wand, wait a couple of seconds, and let go. Curled! This is easy but can take a while, especially if you wrap particularly narrow strands of hair around. However, the great thing about curling wand is the tightness of the curls is totally upto you. If you want tighter curls, just wind the hair around narrowly, if you want them more natural wind the hair aruond the barrell more spaced out. Tongs are very similar, but have a clamp, so that you can clamp the end of the hair, then roll it up from the end, meaning you are much less likely to burn yourself! This means they’re very similar to the wand, and in some ways they are more versatile – you can buy huge barrelled tongs or very narrow ones, meaning your look can b completely down to you. Again this takes practice to get them looking right, but is much easier than using straighteners – though more time consuming, and you have to buy something other than your trusty straighteners.

Bendy Rollers and Ragging
For a slightly more old-school approach to curling, bendy rollers, or even more old-school, ragging, is a great way to acheive messy, natural looking curls, with little work. Bendy rollers generally come in a heater, so that before you use them they get hot, and help mould the hair. This means you generally use this from dry hair, but if you spray it down a little it’ll help the curls last longer. To use these just choose the size of each curl (as we said before, thumb size or a little thicker is about right) and then just wrap the hair around the roller, end first, hair over hair, and then bend the roller into a knot, so that it stays there. Repeat this until all your hair is in rollers, and then spray generously with a firm hold hair hairspray and leave until it is completer cool and dry. Then just take them all out, run your fingers through, and voila! Deliciously curled hair is very little effort. Ragging is very similar to using bendy rollers, and is what girls used to use in to 1900s and before to curl their hair. First things first, find an old sheet or pillow case, and rip into strips (I’d say about 1inch wide and between 6 and 10inches long). Then wash your hair as usual and run a blob of mousse through it – Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Foam is perfect because it dosen’t make the hair feel too stiff – and begin to wind sections of the hair around the ‘rags’ like with the bendy rollers, and then tie the rags into knots all over the head. Leave your head of rags until the hair is completely dry (feel free to sleep in them or blast them with a hairdryer) and then untie all the knots and shake out your curls. Perfect curls overnight! And if your dont have any old sheets or bendy rollers, scrunched up tin foil makes great bendy rollers – and retains heat!

Because our explaining might not have been enough, and we’re still searching for Kelly’s digital camera, we found some great youtube videos to help us explain…

If you have any questions about curling, don’t hesitate to email us or get us on facebook! Love the Kelly Anza Team

“Honey, I’ve Ruined my Hair!”

How-To No Comments

We’ve all done it. Even us hair stylists, at some point or another, have fallen for the lure of home hair dyes. I mean, who wouldn’t? In ten minutes they can make your hair look like Eva Longoria’s/Cheryl Cole’s/Davina McCall’s… Or can they? One of our most common reasons for immediate appointments is home colour kits gone wrong, which is why we’re compiled a quick guide to help you in your time of need!

One of the things we see the most is blondes having dyed their hair dark – and it’s gone disasterously wrong. You’ve gone from blonde bombshell to black, dry and frazzled, when you wanted chocolate, shiny and voluptuous… First thing to do is put a deep conditioning treatment on it, this will help heal the hair, and get rid of the frazzled feeling. We really recommend something like Paul Mitchell’s Super Charged Moisteriser, which will pack your hair with moisture – but if your hair is feeling brittle and your worried about it, pop in for a consultation. Sometimes the old ends of your hair, which often are the parts that feel driest anyway, are the bits that get really affected by colour, so sometimes a good trim is a good first step to curing your colour. And when you come in, we’ll be able to pop a couple of treatments on your hair that have been specifically chosen to cater for your hairs needs.
Okay, so now the condition is on it’s way to being fixed, all we need to focus on is getting the colour as close to your preferred shade as possible. The best thing to remember here is that it will take a long, long time to get your hair back to blonde, and even then you will be risking it’s condition to get there. The best thing to do is come in for a consultation where we can do a strand test, to see how you’ll hair will react to being lightened – this will show us the colour it will come up to (sometimes black hair lifts to a nice brown, but often to an ugly orangey colour) and also how much lightening it will damage it. Once we’ve done this we will be able to phone you up and advise you on the best thing to do. If your hair is not ready to be lightened yet, we will probably recommend you use certain products to help strip any colour out of your hair – and no, we aren’t talking home bleach. This best things for this are particularly cleansing shampoos, head and shoulders, baby shampoos, and the best – wasing up liquid. We know it sounds awful but these combined with deep conditioning will lift at least some of the colour out, and keep your hair in good condition before your undergo any more chemical processes.

Gwen Stefani makes regular trips to the salon to keep her hair looking perfect!

Home bleaching kits look like a miracle worker – just slap this on your hair, and you will have this gorgeous Gwen Stefani blonde at home, no matter what your before shade! Sadly, this is not, and never will be, the case – and even if your hair does lighten up, it will feel fried and brittle. However, once you’ve already dyed your hair, us telling you not to isn’t going to be of any help, so if you’ve gone bleached ‘blonde’ just follow a few simple steps to get your hair back to normal.
The first thing to do, as when you’ve gone too dark, is to put a deep conditioning treatment on the hair – something that has protein in it like Paul Mitchell’s Super Strength Treatment is ideal – this will help rebuild what the bleach has taken out. Now, if you’ve previously coloured your hair, your hair now will probably be patchy, and if you were particularly dark, its probably an unsightly shade of orange. Don’t fret and run out and buy a brown to put back over it – this will just damage your hair more, and probably won’t even go the shade you want. Just give us a ring or pop in for a consultation, and we’ll be able to decide what’s best for you, whether it’s toning the colour down or popping in some highlights, we can do our best to acheive the colour you originally wanted.

And remember, if you’re in doubt, Kelly Anza Hair Design are just a phone call away to help you cure your colour!

Camoflage Colour… Without the face paint.

News No Comments

The Kelly Anza Hair Design know about how it is, between your usual colour dates, when your colour just begins to look dull, or grown out, or faded – it’s even worse when you know you’ve got 3 or 4 weeks to wait until your next appointment…

…so why not book in to have your colour camoflaged? And no, we’re not talking about going green, or joining the army – we’re talking about effective, inexpensive ways of touching up your colour between visits, so your colour carries on looking fabulous – and doesn’t break the bank.

Wondering how this is possible? Between your colour appointments just book in with one of our trainees or newly qualified stylists, who can then apply a retouch colour thats been recommended by your usual stylist, to your parting and hairline, and a colour gloss on the rest – this service is quick and effective, and will help your colour last between appointments. And the best bit? By booking in with a trainee, you can get the colour you want around half the price of what you’d usually pay.

Ask your stylist on your next visit what Camoflage Colour can do for you!

Paul Mitchell’s Block Colouring…

News No Comments

This weekend, Kelly and Lilly, our two top stylists, travelled upto Bristol to take part in a colour course held by Paul Mitchell. The course took place on monday morning, so after a good nights rest in a Bristol hotel,  they went to discover some new techniques that they could not only pass onto the other stylists, but to you, to give your hair the stylish colour you deserve.

The technique they learnt about is called ‘Block Colouring’ – and no, it won’t give you hair to resemble a lego man. It’s all about faster ways to acheive multi tonal colour than highlighting, which will mean less time sitting around, and a personal, more fun result for you. Block colouring can be used to acheive more natural all over colour – for example, if you are blonde and are considering going dark, we could use a few different shades so your brown will look more alive and not as flat as an all over colour can. Or if you really want a drastic change, block colouring can be used to throw a few colours together, like various shades of copper and orange, or tones of red and purple, for a bright, exciting effect. The colours and ways in which we use block colouring can change your hair’s style without a cut – it is all designed with your needs in mind. Tie your hair up alot? We can add in some peek-a-boo blonde to peep out of your pony tail. Blunt fringe and tonnes of attitude? Block colouring can allow us to give your fringe the outspoken style it deserves with a chunk of rebellious red.

Fancy a change or finding out more? Email, phone or pop in to see us at Kelly Anza Hair Design for a free consultation, and we can help you add life to your locks! And the best thing? You’ll leave the salon with a totally unique colour that no one else wil have. Go one, give it a try!

Sea, Sun…and Damaged Hair – The Kelly Anza Team’s Holiday Survival Guide

How-To 1 Comment

It’s getting to that lovely time of year, the kind of time the sun starts to shine a little more, and weather gets a bit warmer… and you start to get excited about your holiday! Between us at Kelly Anza we have a few holidays planned, and we can’t wait, but the one thing that always gets us talking (as well as how many pairs of shoes we can fit in our luggage allowance) is holiday hair care. When battling it out with the sun, sea and the swimming pool, hair can undergo some hell of abuse – especially when you’ve probably just bought travel sized bits that your not used to. So we thought we’re rally around for all our best tips and put them into a Hair Survival guide to keep your locks looking sexy this summer!

Before you Leave

When planning on what toilettries to take on holiday, take into account your hair type and what treatments and services your hair has undergone recently. Do you have highlights, lightened or brittle damaged hair? Remember to take a treatment with you, such as Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong. This will help stop your hair breaking off in the heat and keep it feel smooth. Have very coloured hair that’s at risk of fading? Why dont you pop in and pick up one of our colour care Take Home Kits. With travel sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner and reconstructive treatment, this is the ideal thing to take home – the bottles are bigger than average travel sized products, but aren’t too bulky so you can only take what you need. Do you tend to over straighten or blowdry your hair? Give your hair a break and leave your straighteners at home – this will give a chance for your hair to repair it’s self and it will mean you can’t reach for those stylers! Remember, taking plenty of conditioner and hair care products should be one of your top priorities, because it will save you money in the long run – we’re sure you’d rather not come back from your relaxing beah break in a panic about your hair! And don’t panic about getting your colour done right before you go – whilst we’re sure you want to look gorgeous on your holiday, it will be ruined in the sun and be a waste of your money. Instead, why don’t you come in for a consultation a few weeks before you go, and we’ll recommend some good inbetween treatments and a good hair-care routine for your hair on holiday.

On the Holiday

On your holiday, your hair is the last thing you want to be worrying about, so here’s some tips and quick fixes to help manage any nightmare hair…

  • When out in the sun, the best way to protect your hair from the sun is to wear a hair or a headscarf. This will protect it from some of the harmful UV rays – think of what your skin would be like with no SPF, you don’t want this on your hair do you? Going for a boho look? Just use a colourful sarong, fold it up a few times and tie it up like a bandana – cool and protected. Want something a bit edgier? Topshop and other high-street shops sell some of the coolest straw trilbys, perfect for keeping your hair fresh and the sun out of your eyes.
  • Before heading out to the pool or the beach, apply a sun protection spray onto your hair. There are tonnes available, but for an easy fix, just mix some conditioner (we recommend particularly moisterizing ones, like Paul Mitchell’s Instant Moisture Daily Treatment) with some high-factor suncream and run through your hair, before tying up out of the way. This will help keep your hair protected from the salt, sun and chlorine, and help keep it moisterised.
  • Have your highlights gained a slightly green tinge from the swimming pool? Don’t panic! Just rub a large dollop of Tomato Ketchup (we recommend the cheapest you can find…) through your hair and leave for a couple of minutes. The red of the ketchup will counteract the green leaving you with gorgeous blonde locks again.
  • Hair feeling a bit flat after lots of washing and conditioning? Don’t stop the conditioner – instead just spray some of Bastiste’s Dry Shampoo through the roots of your hair to dry them out a little and give your hair a little lift. This is a bit of a wonder product as it’s very cheap and available in most high street chemists – and it now comes in black, so dark haired girlies aren’t left looking grey!
  • Panicking without your straighteners? Just pop some conditioner and mousse in your hair (Or Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting foam, which is gorgeously conditioning with great hold) and scrunch it up for beach-sexy waves.
  • Worried about the ends looking frazzled? Book in for a slight trim before and after your holiday – har grows faster during the summer, so if you want to keep your cut looking sharp and sexy, even more regular trims are definately a good idea!

On your Return

The day you get back, wash your hair, smother on an intensly moisturising and strengthening treatment, and leave it in over night. Your hair will not only have had to put up with the heat and holiday, but any stress from your journey home can leave your hair feeling fried. Leaving a conditioning treatment in over night can help repair this. Worried about your faded colour? Don’t hesistate to book in to the salon straight away, and then they can help  cure your colour and have a consultation about the condition of your hair – whilst if you’ve followed the above tips your hair is probably okay, you stylist might be able to recommend a product to help you manage it.

If you have any tips or tricks for you holiday hair, don’t hesitate to email us at salon@kellyanza.com, and we’ll add them to our list.

Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to check back next week for our next How To!

Kelly Anza loves… Dannii Minogue!

How-To No Comments

Be it classy and elegant,or punky and edgy, Dannii Minogue’s style always stands out, and she manages to reflect her eclectic and sophisticated style not only in her clothes, but with her hair too. Dannii has shown us UK girlies that bobs are just as versatile, if not more so, as long hair, and have heaps of attitude and style. And this was why we were so excited to pick her as our subject for this weeks How-To!

Since rising to the UK’s attention in 1988, as the younger sister of Neighbour’s star (and later pop singer) Kylie Minogue, Dannii has publicly gone through marriages, music projects, and image changes, but never quite won over the hearts of the United Kingdom. At least, not until Simon Cowell chose her to appear on the X Factor Panel. It was this big break that pushed Dannii Minogue out of her sister’s shadow and into her own spotlight. She has since managed to establish herself as an honest and worthy judge, and as a true fashionista.

This week we’re going to focus on cut and styling, because Dannii styles her hair so beautifully and in such an array of styles, and we think all hair colours can get away with a chic bob like this, be it a blonde bombshell, a fiery redhead, or a sophisticated brunette, the bob can work for you.

When considering a bob, remember to think about your hair’s texture, your daily routine and how often you can make it to the salon for trims. If your hairs gorgeous curls and you tend not to spend too much time on it, go for a long bob that you can scrunch up and it’s done, without too much hassle. If your hair has a tendency to kink in a certain place, talk to your stylist about whether an inverted bob or a more sleek, one length bob would suit your hair best. Bobs can suit all hair types, it’s just finding the style for you. Don’t go for an ultra high maintenence chin length bob with a pixie fringe if your always in a rush – you’ll find yourself stuck with a messy looking hairstyle that you never have time to make look sexy! Are you going from a long style to a short one? Thing about doing this gradually. In the morning when you wake up, imagine going to touch your hair and it not being there – If your hair is very long, think about going just onto your shoulders before you go any shorter, decide whether you like it and pop back in – it’ s better to do it gradually than plunge into something you’ll regret!

The best thing about using Dannii Minogue as an example of this kind of style, is that she experiments so much with it. She doesn’t let her bob get boring because she uses extensions, quiffs, different textures and a variety of hair accessories to stop her bob getting boring. By using our following tutorials and tips, and taking inspiration from other stars like Dannii, you can see how to work a bob without getting bored.

Smooth And Sleek

In the above picture, Dannii’s sporting a slightly more edgy a-symmetrical version of her usual bob. This is a great look for people who are a bit more daring and spend a bit more time styling their hair, but to achieve this shiny, smooth look, you can use any bob!

  1. Using a Smoothing shampoo and conditioner (we love Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny range) wash and towel dry your hair. Comb your fringe into place, if you have one, so that it straight away begins to dry in the direction you want it to. Use a straightening balm or serum, and run it through the ends of your hair to protect it from the heat. Balms are great for this, but if your hair is thicker, or curlier, a serum will help smooth it out more.
  2. Rough dry your hair until it’s about 90% dry with the blow dryer. It’s best to dry it in the direction you want it to go, so most hair types should blow dry down the hair shaft (this will also help seal off the hair cuticles and give a gorgeous shine) however, if your hair is particularly fine or flat, dry your hair upside-down for a while, to give it a bit more body in the roots.
  3. Once it’s almost completely dry, using a round brush just curl all the ends under and smooth our the top layers. Do this until your hair is totally dry.
  4. If your hair is particularly straight, you will probably find that you have already been able to achieve this look without the help of straighteners – this is great! Simply put a little serum through the ends to smooth it down and encourage shine, and spray a light hairspray over the style to help it hold in place. Voila! However, if your hair is thicker or wavy, you’ll need to pull our your trusty straighteners you help you finish this one off. Section off the hair and start from the bottom, and just gently glide the straighteners over each section of the hair. When you get to the end of each section, just curl the straighteners under so it gives a gentle flick under, to stop it looking too spiky.
  5. Continue step 4 until the hair is totally smooth, and then just finish off with a light serum on the ends and some hairspray (we love Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Light) to seal the style. Ta Da! Gorgeously smooth sleek hair.
  6. To finish this look, Dannii sometimes fastens her fringe to the side with some criss crossed kirby grips, or puts a delicate slide in the side to dress the look up.

Beach Beautiful Curls

  1. This look is very similar to the long waves I wrote about for Jennifer Aniston last week, but with shorter hair it is much easier to create the desired look! Of course as I said last week girls with particularly straight hair, I would advise using a curling tong to enhance your waves, but most girlies will be able to recreate this look with even just a subtle wave in their hair! First off, wash your hair with your usual shampoo and conditioner, we recommends Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body range, to give your hair a bit more ‘Ooomph!’
  2. Once you’ve washed your hair, rigorously towel dry it and then if you have a fringe comb that into place, but be careful not to flatten it down too much. Run either a mousse (we recommend Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting foam for this, it’s super conditioning and smells coconutty and lovely) or a curling gel (Round Trip by Paul Mitchell is gorgeous) through your hair, and scrunch it up in handfuls so that it creates natural waves. To really enhance them, twist a couple of bits up into ‘faux deadlocks’ so that they create curls themselves.
  3. Either let it dry naturally and keep scrunching it or grab your trusty diffuser and use that on a low heat to scrunch dry the curls. But don’t over dry them! Leaving a little bit of moisture in the hair will help it stay curly.
  4. Finish off with a spritz of firm hold hairspray (pump ones are great, we recommend Freeze and Shine by Paul Mitchell) or a scrunch of serum for a beach gorgeous hairdo, great with big shades and summer dresses!

Rock n Roll Quiff

  1. This style oozes sex and attitude, and teamed with a smoky eye and big lashes can dress up any outfit. It works best with day old hair, so don’t worry about washing it, but if you are working this from clean hair, use a light mousse (like Sculpting Foam) to give it a bit of hold when drying it.
  2. Section off the part of your hair you want to quiff. We recommend about mid-eyebrow to mid-eyebrow as the perfect width, but you might like yours thinner or thicker. Tie back the rest of your hair, so just the part you want is down.
  3. Grab the very back of the section of hair (usually about an inch forward of your crown) and using a fine toothed comb, gently tease the roots of this section (brush hair the opposite way to create knots at the roots). Tease it more for bigger and less for a smaller quiff. Do this in as many sections as you need until you have a fine section at the front with no back combing. Spray all the roots and you will probably look like you’re trying to make a mohawk… No fear!
  4. Pull the unteased section from the front of your hair over the teased part, and comb it until it’s smooth. On doing this, you might notice that you need some parts a bit bigger – just go back a few steps and tease the bits you want a bit higher. Once it’s looking the right size, smooth it all over (the sides are likely to be messy so comb them a bit more to smooth them over) and pin it all at the back. Generally 2 kirby grips in an ‘X’ shape will hold it, but more or less, it’s upto you.
  5. Spray your finished quiff with a strong hold hairspray (we love Paul Mitchelll’s Extra Body Finishing Spray) and you’re all set! This quiff should last really well, even in a hot sweaty night club, but we recommend taking a comb and a small can of spray out with you just in case anything falls out. You can leave it like this, or back comb the sides to balance it out, or even curl the ends to create a vintage 1950s look. Sexy and sorted!

How-To No Comments

For the second installment of our new weekly How-To feature, we decided to choose a woman who’s hair is always immaculate and elegant and yet so stylish! She (and her hair!) was thrust into the public eye in 1994 as Rachel from the incredibly popular sitcom, Friends. She won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performances, and most of our hearts. But not only did her personality win us all over, but her hair. ‘The Rachel’ cut was asked for in salons worldwide, and whilst now it tends to look a bit dated, her modern styles have followed through – and we’re still getting women coming in asking for them!

Jennifer’s hair is so popular because of one main reason – it looks natural, and healthy. She tends to change her colour but only ever subtly, ranging from light ash browns to dark golden blondes, sometimes all one colour and other times gentle highlights to lift the colour. Her cuts are almost always long, with long layers and rarely much of a fringe, though she has been known to sport a side fringe too! But even when she has mixed it up, and gone for a bob or a fringe, Jennifer knows what suits her, and sticks to it. And the golden rule to Jen’s style? It’s all about Beach and not Bleach. Gentle highlights in warm hues stop her hair from looking too styled and too harsh…

If your hairs..

  • Dark ~ Discuss with your stylist how light your interested in going, but remember to keep it soft and natural! Jen’s hair has that ‘Never Been Coloured’ look, so try to stick to similar shades to your own, but if you do fancy a change, think about going ashier or more golden!
  • Dark Blonde to Medium Brown ~ Your hair is perfect for getting Jennifer’s look! Just ask your stylist for subtle highlights, or mabe even a gloss toner to brighten up your natural shade, but whatever you decide, make sure it adds life! Flat, dull browns are a no no!
  • Fair ~ Maybe thing about adding some subtle darker tones to add depth to you natural highlights, or talk to your stylist about how a colour gloss can make your flat pale blonde into a shiny, lively golden blonde.
  • Red Hair ~ Whilst any change too dramatic with red hair can look unnatural and be unflattering to your delicate colouring, don’t panic! A light gloss toner can ass shine and tone down your fiery tresses, keeping the look casual and natural.

You’ve probably noticed that we’ve mostly written about gloss toners and semi permanent colours in our colour section today – This is because permanent colours can be your worst enemy when looking for a natural style! With semi permanent colours they not only keep your hair healthier, but they prevent any knd of regrowth line, which can look unnatural and just not very nice if you’ve changed your colour dramtically!

Now colour and cuts are over and done with, we thought we’d give you a few little how to’s on Jen’s various styles, so you can easily copy her simple and sophisticated style at home.

Beach style curls!

This look is gorgeous and casual but can also look incredibly cool and effortless in the evening with a nice summery dress and a prety headband or hairclip. The main thing to remember when trying to obtain this style is that too much product will make your curls look crispy and fake!

  1. First thing to do is wash your hair with a volumising shampoo, and use a very little bit of conditioner (unless your hair is particularly dry/curly, then follow you usual routine). This will stop your hair weighing down the curls and looking flat and messy.
  2. Depending on the natural wave in your hair, different products are needed for this looks. If your hair is slightly wavy to curly, we recommend using Paul Mitchell’s Round Trip, which is a gorgeous lightweight curling liquid, with possibly a little bit of mousse/foam to help hold your hair. Straight haired girls, go for something with a bit more hold! Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Foam has a lovely coconut sent and conditions you hair rather than making it sticky or solid.
  3. Once you’ve run an even ammount of your chosen product from root to tip of your hair, clip the top layers up and grab about 1cm thick sections of your hair, and twist them up as tight as you can, and slowly work your way up your head. For bigger curls, take bigger sections, and for smaller tighter curls take smaller sections. once you have done this all over your head you should look like yours sporting a dodgy dreadlock-like look!
  4. Next, grab your hairdryer and put a diffuser on the end of it (most hair dryers come with these but if not they can usually be ordered online to fit your dryer! Don’t worry if you haven’t got a diffused, you can always let your hair dry naturally and scrunch it up with your fingers). Put this on a medium to high heat and a low power, and then grab large sections of hair and place them in the diffuser – this will dry your hair without blowing it around and making it frizz.
  5. Once you’ve dried all the hair this way, run your fingers through the curls and break them up a bit. Voila! If yours isn’t quite as curly as you’d like, use a large barrelled curling iron to put a few more structured curls in, but not too many or it won’t look natural and beachy!

Off the face and Glam!

This look is really flattering and pretty, but what’s really great about it is it’s versatility. This is the sort of look you can do in the morning, and then easily dress it up at night by curling sections of your hair or clipping the rest up and away for a quick and easy updo!

  1. This look can be done either with a small twist or a more complicated french plait. For this tutorial we’re going to do a twist, but we will feature french plaits in a later tutorial so you can upgrade this look! To start off, wash and dry your hair as you usually do, and then part your hair on the side.
  2. On the larger side of the parting, take a small section of hair right at the root next to the parting, and make a small twist in it. Then, take another section of hair, next to the first, and add it in to the twist. Do this a far as you want the twist to go (we like to just do it across the very front).
  3. Fasten the twist with a couple of hair grips, or a clip. Give the front a generous spray of hairspray to make sure no strands try to escape! Once you’ve done this you can hide the grips by pulling the hair on that side over them slightly, so it looks natural and pretty!
  4. To finish off, either loosely curl the ends of the hair for a natural way like in the picture, or curl all your hair and loosely grip it all back for a smarter, more formal look.

Remember, if this all sounds a bit too complicated, pop in for a consultation or book in for an updo/blowdry, and we can take you step by step on what we do so you can try it yourself next time! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send us a message by email or on our facebook, the links are under the Contact tab…

Remember to check back next week when we give short hair a turn and tell you how to acheive some of Dannii Minogues elegant and edgy styles at home!

Kelly Anza loves… Cheryl Cole

How-To No Comments

Here at Kelly Anza Hair Design we’re constantly being asked by our clients how to acheive celebrity looks, and whilst we try to give as much advice as we can in our consultations and appointments, we know we can’t cover everything. So after a little bit of thought we decided to start doing a weekly post on here, with some how-tos and some information on how to acheive these must have celebrity styles. And to start off, the girl we are asked about more than anyone else.. the gorgeous Cheryl Cole.

Now if you haven’t heard of Cheryl Cole, you must’ve been living underneath a rock for the past 8 years! Since rising to fame with girl group Girls Aloud, Ms Cole has since become a WAG, a TV personality on The X Factor, a style icon to hundreds and possibly the most talked about woman in British magazines and newspapers, especially since appearing on the cover of UK Vogue – the ultimate style approval.

I think the first thing most people notice about Cheryle Cole is her hair, and that’s because she knows exactly what looks good on her, and yet is still daring enough to try new things, such as when she recently stepped out sporting gorgeous red tones on her locks! Despite this, you are most likely to see her with gorgeous chocolate brown hair, with a few carefully placed caramel highlights, lots of layers and most importantly BODY! But don’t worry, to get Cheryl’s look to suit you and on your own budget, we have a few ways to help…

If you’re…

  • Naturally Dark  You can perfect Cheryl’s colour, just ask your stylist for chocolatey brown lengths with  fine caramel highlights, but avoid having any on your parting – this can lead to your hair looking stripy, which will look unnatural!
  • Mousey or Fair   Whilst you can still emmulate Cheryl’s colour, a slightly lighter, softer look will probably be more flattering for your colouring, so if your on the paler side, opt for a lighter golden brown all over with lighter highlights, or if your feeling a bit more brave or have darker skin, you might be able to get Cheryl’s dark colours – but remember, it’s best to find a colour that suits you, because this style is all about looking natural and healthy, so if you’re unsure, pop in for a consultation and we can have a chat, or ask about one of our PM Shine services, a semi permanent colour gloss – great for trying out a new colour without committing.
  • Red haired  You’re lucky to be able to sport such a head turning colour! Make the most of it by keeping it in good condition by using lots of strengthening treatments and always protecting your hair from heat – this will stop it from going dull and breaking off from damage. Ask your stylist for some subtle golden blonde or coppery shades to spice up your colour without covering it up!

When talking about your cut with your stylist, it’s important to think about your life style and appearance before asking for something exactly like Cheryl’s! Are you often in a rush and don’t have much time for your hair? Then maybe its best not to go for a blunt fringe or anything that takes too much styling – go for longer layers and a sweepy fringe that you can style quickly on the go and won’t get in your eyes! Recently cut your hair short? In her earlier days Cheryl used to sport a choppy layered bob, think Posh Spice with more volume and life.  Have more time to style and play wit yor hair? Try Cheryl’s blunt fringed look or maybe even splash out and get some clip in extensions to boost what you already have – it’s all about body and length!

Going out and need that perfect polished style? A big bouncy blowdry with some loose natural curls at the ends will sort out longer styles. Simply wash your hair and towel try, before using something to hold your style and protect your hair from the heat – we love Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Sculpting Foam. Next rough try your hair with the dryer, and style your fringe. Most of you probably already know how you want to do this, but for long sweepy fringes we recommend using a medium styling brush to curve your fringe across so that it sweeps just above your eyes and looks full and shiny. Then, dry most of your hair upside down, or pointing the hair dryer the opposite way to where the hair hangs, this will give it maximum root lift, making the rest of the style easier. Once your hair is nearly completely dry, use a large styling brush to smooth out the top layers of the hair with the dryer, pulling the brush up away from the head. A good tip is to point the dryer down the hair itself, as this will smooth the cuticles and make your hair shiny and healthy looking. Lastly, gently curl the ends of your hair using a wide barrelled curling tong, so it looks like it naturally falls into loose curls. If, after this your hair is still lacking in volume, your comb is you best friend – back comb the roots of your hair to give your style that extra boost.

This all sound like a bit too much effort for you? Book in for a blow dry, and we’ll make sure you leave looking Cheryl-Cole fabulous! And lastly, to finish off your gorgeous Cheryl Cole-esque style remember chic, tailored dresses, nude lipgloss, fake eyelashes (we like the Eyelure’s extra length best!) and a flawless complexion never go amiss!

We hope that helped anyone who’s been after Cheryl’s look, if you have any other questions please send us a message on facebook or on here. Check back next week for styling tips on how to acheive Jennifer Aniston’s look, the Kelly Anza way!

Despite being a little late, we just want to say Happy Valentines day to all our clients! We all had lovely weekends with friends and loved ones and we hope you did too! We have a few offers on the way for the month of March that will help you  get that fresh spring style without breaking the bank!

Last night was the much anticipated Rock for Rosie concert in Club 2k, Penzance. As you probably already know, Rock for Rosie was an event organised in celebration of the inspriational life of Rosie Jade Howis, who sadly passed away earlier this year after battling cancer. The Lauren Hoare and Rosie Howis Charity for all young people with cancer will be recieving all the proceeds, and over £1000 of prizes for the raffle were donated by local and national businesses, not only raising money but also cancer awareness. We had a brilliant night, the music was amazing (all provided by local bands and DJs) and everyone made a massive effort with their fancy dress costumes. The night was a sellout, and 2k had never been so packed, and we hope plenty of money was made for the charities involved!
