It was just 2 and a half years ago, in early 2009 that after having worked in salons both in Lincolnshire and in Penzance, I made the decision, then just 22, to take the step into the world of business and start my salon.

Having experienced first hand being a manager, and a stylist, in some larger salons, I realised that so many salons were missing the touch of a qualified and experienced hair stylist in the running of the business, and often this meant that clients weren’t given the service that they should have been. Because of this, even at the very beginnings of Kelly Anza Hair Design, my plan was to create a comfortable, cosy atmosphere for clients to relax in, and still get the exceptional service and professional hair styling they deserve.

From viewing the premises on Parade Street, Penzance, to opening the doors to my first clients, it took no more than 4 weeks to completely revamp, style and decorate our tiny building space into a cosy, yet luxurious salon. I have to thank my team, family and friends for helping make that possible! Of course, opening in such a short space of time was a risk, as it meant us all giving up work for a couple of weeks and putting our all into the salon, but luckily it paid off and I don’t think any of us have looked back since.

My team of 4 soon grew into a wonderful team of 6, and the salon started to feel a bit too close for comfort. We soon realised that to cope with the overwhelming success of the salon, we were going to need more space – any guests will know how little room to manouvre there is – and so after just 6 months of business we extended onto the second floor of our salon.

And things haven’t slowed down since – under 2 years after expanding the salon, I realised that, thanks to the unrelenting, and quite honestly overwhelming support of our loyal clients, friends and family, the team (which now consist of 5 stylists, 2 juniors and 1 assistant) the business had well and truly outgrown our building. I don’t think any of us realised when we opened that the salon would be such a success – opening a new business in the middle of the recession was a risk, but thanks to a lot of hard work, we’ve not only made a small business work, but we’re having to move to larger premises to keep up with demand.

So my dream come true of opening my own salon has taken a massive jump, and at the age of just 24, I will be lucky enough to be opening my own salon on the main High Street in Penzance. When I first saw the building, I could see how the space could be used as a salon straight away, and I knew it was the place for us – but not without some very, very hard work. Since viewing the space just 2 months ago, the entire ground floor of the new Kelly Anza Hair Design has been entirely refurbished.

Between working late nights to see to clients and train our assistants, I’ve also been frequenting local auctions to source out vintage furnishings and helping out redesign the building – it’s every stylist’s dream to open their own salon, but to completely design their own and put their own stamp on their local High Street, that’s just unbelievable. Still avoiding the clinical, cold look of many high-end salons, we have kept the comfortable, unique, vintage-inspired look we’ve come to be known for, complete with beautiful vintage furniture, like our gorgeous seat in reception, which was originally made in the 1700s – it’s inspired the entire room!

We will be closing our Parade Street premises on the 5th November, and are reopening on Thursday 10th November in our new salon, in 29 Market Jew Street, right next to the Victorian Tea Rooms!

Without our amazing clients, friends and families, none of this would be possible, and we can’t wait to show you what you’ve helped us achieve. So, you were blonde, and it was lovely. Your healthy, natural, golden locks were gorgeous and healthy and thick. They shone in the sun and they were your best friend. And then you decided to dye it dark. It washed you out, it faded really quick and the roots on your crown look like you’re gaining a bald spot… This, this is not the look you were going for. You need to get that colour back, you want to get rid of the colour on your hair…

So you decide that getting it bleached will be the best thing.

We get tonnes of girls coming in to the salon with this situation, and the first thing they ask is how much for a full head of bleach. The chances are, this bleaching isn’t going to give you the result you want. Firstly, due to how dye sticks (especially home dyes and when people have coloured it more than once) your hair will end up patchy. The natural roots of your hair will lift up to the whitest of blonde, but the ends will probably be left looking dull and orangey. I bet you didn’t have dull orange hair before, did you?

Then, there’s the condition issue. Bleach/lightener can literally suck the shine and health completely out of your hair. If you have long hair, the ends are likely to break, which could give you a chemical haircut, even if you don’t want it. This can be hard to fix, often once hair has been over processed, the best thing you can do is cut the worst of it off. Admittedly, we’re over exagerrating a little, with some good hair care and the right strength bleach this shouldn’t happen, but if it does, you’ll feel worse about your hair than when it was dark!

Lastly, as all over bleach will more than likely lift your roots lighter than the rest of your hair, you then get the issue of regrowth. Compared to Gwen Stefani blonde, even the lightest natural hair will look dark, and it won’t just gradually fade out, oh no, you will be left with a big, dark ruler line. Instead of your usual 6-8 weekly highlights, you’ll be noticing those dark roots in 2-3 weeks! Scary, isn’t it?

Fergi’s highlights took her from dark to sunkissed blonde in a healthy, natural-looking way. Gorgeous? I think so!

This isn’t all doom and gloom though, we aren’t saying you can’t go back to blonde, we’re just saying that an all over bleach is not the way to go (and certainly not one to try at home!). The best, easiest and longest lasting way to go back to your blonde is highlights. Before you protest and say you don’t want stripy hair, we aren’t talking about massive chunky slices of blonde, we’re talking full head, finely woven highlights of blonde to blend into the darker colour thats around and give you a sunkissed blonde that look completely natural. And when your hair grows through, the multi tonal blonde will blend into your roots, giving you a soft, faded effect rather than a harsh solid line.

Once you’ve had a full head, the upkeep can be easier than you would think. You probably won’t need to come in for 6-8 weeks (though many clients come back in around 4 weeks for a toner to be put on to banish yellow tones), and when you do you can opt for a T-section or half head to get rid of pesky roots without breaking the bank!

What’re your New Years Resolutions? We’re all going on a big health kick, but more importantly we’ve already kept to ours and finally sorted out our Online Booking! If you’re ever unable to ring or pop in during salon times, you can now book your appointment yourself online!

On a slightly less positive note, due to the VAT increase our prices have all gone up slightly – don’t panic, nothing too dramatic! Only a couple of pounds here and there.

This year, we originally intended to do what everyone does for their work Christmas party, you know the deal, get dressed up after work, go for a meal somewhere and drink much too much wine, go out far too late and wake up feeling tired, hungover and pretty much just awful. But then we realised we do this a lot throughout December anyway, plus with the salon getting busy and working late.. Suddenly going out didn’t seem so inviting.

And then Kelly came up with the best idea yet: We visit The Great Escape beauty salon in Truro. The Great Escape is a gorgeous little beauty salon just outside Truro’s city centre. With a cosy, vintage-esque style (much like our own!) and lots of comfy cushions, the salon makes you feel instantly at home from the second you walk in the door. The girls in there were absolutey lovely, and quickly led us up to the Relaxation Room where we would be spending our Girl’s Night In. It was a cosy and warm ittle room with 2 sofas and a lovely big beanbag and loads of cushions. Complete with champagne, tea, smoothies, nibbles and face masks, the room was a complete dream – not to mention the Sex And The City boxset! We relaxed and had some pizza wfirst, and then 2 by 2 went off for our treatments. We had the most relaxing facials and back and shoulder massages ever, and manicures. We then finished off our own facials in the room with luxury Spieza face masks, which was so much fun!

1 week to go before Christmas, and here at Kelly Anza Hair Design we have been rushed off our feet! Because whilst we all get a few days off, and should probably take this time to relax, how can we?! With parties and invitations to nights out and junk food coming out of our ears, we can’t resist to take up every offer and get into the festive spirit, even if it means wearing ourselves out. But you can prevent the damage, with these few simple steps…

1. Start Off Beautiful!

It’s so easy when you’re busy with work and parties and dinners to begin to forget about yourself, whether it’s forgetting to get your hair done or letting your nails chip – and the best way to prevent this? Start off Beautiful! As soon as December 1st hits, book in for some very important appointments. Firstly, book in to have your hair done – whether it needs to be done now or later in the month, book well in advance, most salon’s find the week before Christmas gets booked up as early as November, so make sure you get your way in there! Secondly, go for a pamper. A facial at the beginning of this time will make sure your skin’s in good condition before you start to abuse it (with the late nights, the forgetting-to-take-your-make-up-off, the hangovers and getting dehydrated), and why don’t you treat yourself to a Gel Polish Manicure? These genious treatments (offered now in most salons in Penzance) involve putting a layer of coloured gel (like you would use for nail extentions) over the nail, which lasts until you have them taken off! Perfect for when you’re too busy to reapply!

2. Always Take Off Your Make-Up

And we know it’s a chore for most lovely ladies after a night out! But think about it for a second: During the party season, you want to look your best, so without realising it you’re probably cakin more make-up on your face than ever before, and we all know you’ll at least once reapply on top of you evening make-up – don’t deny it! Just thnk of your poor old pores, getting more and more clogged up with dirt, getting drier and more and more tired… Counteract these acts of skin misjustice with a skin regime to boot! Start off by investing in some good quality cleansing wipes – we don’t think you can go wrong with Simple’s Cleansing Facial Wipes – at just £2.99, these little wonders remove all traces of make-up and leave skin fresh, smooth and moisterised.

3. Prep That Pout!

Whether it’s underneath the mistletoe, or when the clock strikes twelve at New Year, soft, smooth, kissable lips are essential during the party season, despite the harsh cold. Often lips can get particularly dry, chapped and sore when the weather turns cold, and a great tip for reviving them is smearing on loads of Blistex’s Relief Cream – it’s penetrates the lips and deeply moisterises them! Once this has stopped them feeling cracked and sore, keep up that smoothness with Carmex Cherry Lipbalm! Not only does it smell delicious, but it protects the lips and keeps them smooth, and is great to prep your lips before wearing a gorgeous Berry lipstick, the only colour our lips will be gracing this festive season!

4. Defend Your Locks From Heat!

Simple blow dry to curled, smoothed, backcombed, it’s all damaging, and with the cold weather taking it’s toll as well, your hair’s going to be sad! And I know we repeat these things all the time but: Invest in a good shampoo, conditioner and weekly treatment. Use the treatment once or twice a week and leave it on for as long as you can. Avoid using excessive heat on your hair. Always use a heat protect spray before any heat-styling. And finally, a good serum can revive those ends without washing your hair. Live by these rules, this party season, and stop your hair from tiring itself out.

5. Perfectly Primed and Ready!

The perfect primer will not only make your make-up apply easier, it’ll make it last longer and it’ll mean you need to use less! The whole point of a primer is to prep (or prime) your skin ready for foundation, so that it can really hold on to the skin and do the job it’s meant to do without sliding off or flaking! Which we all know happens a lot when we’re on the dance floor! There are loads of different brands and kinda, but if you’re looking to spend a little more, MAC’s Prep + Prime is great, but GOSH also do a great one for just £11 if you’re on a budget! If you’re looking for the perfect long lasting, crease free smoky eye this season, look no further than Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. This little Holy Grail of Make-Up will make your shadow appear brighter, more vibrant, and make it last all night long. We swear by it for crease free eyes, and you only need a tiny bit!

6. Look After Those Feet!

Whether it’s platforms, peep toes, or kitten heels, we all know heels get a good wearing during the party season – and whilst they lool beautiful, they can also make walking for the next few days agony! We can’t stop this post-party-pain, but we can help you in a couple of ways! First off, as a general rule, the cheaper the shoe the more pain you’ll be in! A good quality pair of heels will be made to support your foot and look good, and the sole won’t be too solid – have a good walk around in them before you buy, and imagine standing up in them all night. Are you wincing? If so, don’t buy them! Secondly, always take a pair of flats with you. A night can be ruined if you have to go home early because your feet hurt. You can get loads of fold-up flats, that still look party gorgeous, to fit in your clutch. No excuses!

7. Keep Hydrated!

Sometimes, during this time of year, we kind of forget about keeping hydrated. We swap our diet cokes for mulled wine, our early nights infront of the TV for late nights on the dancefloor, and our usual salads for salty roasts. And in the end, our skin feels dry, we feel exhausted and frankly, we don’t want to part any more. Often, these are signs of dehydration, which can make you feel sluggish, give you headaches, and cause your skin to break out and become dry. Not what you were planning on? Didn’t think so! If the cold air’s making you crave a hot coffee, swap it for a fruity or herbal tea. Alternate every alcoholic drink on a night out with a soft drink (this will also prevent a hangover from hell!). Lastly, when you get in, before you go to bed, have a pint of water. I know that sounds excessive, but it will help rehydrate you!

8. Look Sensational, Not Starved!

When everyone’s talking about their amazing little black dress or their new skin tight trousers that their gonna wear this season, it’s easy to begin to feel a little competitive about how you’re going to look in your outfit. You know, when you start noticing little lumps and bumps, thinking your fat when you’re not! Avoid this by eating healthily from the start of the month. Avoid treating hangovers with a fry up, and opt for porridge and fruit instead. Swap bloaty fizzy drinks for still, and always go for diet coke in mixers!  These will stop you eating any unnecessary large ammounts of fat and anything that will make you feel bloated. Don’t you feel better already?!

9. Plan Your Way Home! 

It sounds obvious, but a safe way home will end the night on a high! Wandering around on your own late at night is dangerous, so make sure if you’re walking, you’re with a friend. If you’re planning on getting a taxi home, book it before you go out – this is an especially good idea if you have somewhere to be in the morning – and in your name. This also gives you a great opportunity to haggle the price of the taxi a little cheaper, before you’re too drunk to be taken seriously. Lastly, if you have a designated drive, try not to make them feel left out! Arrange for another of your party to stick to the soft drinks, and if she/he says it’s time to go, listen!

10. Get Moving!

And we aren’t just talking about the dancefloor! Gentle exercise like brisk walking, jogging or swimming will help you to feel more alert and will give you more energy! Drag yourself out of bed, have a glass of water and pop into town. Yes, we know you maxed out your credit card, but a speedy bit of window shopping will up your heard rate! If you choose to give swimming a go, half an hour of breast stroke will relax and invigorate you, not to mention a relax in the toxin-releasing sauna…  Ready for tonight? Good!

As a majority of you probably already know (because we haven’t been able to stop talking about it) this weekend the Kelly Anza Design Team travelled up to London to go to Salon International! For those of you who have never heard of it, Salon International is a huge trade show for those in the hair and beauty industry, with many world reknowned hair care and beauty brands. Not only is it a great opportunity for these brands to show off their products, but also for top stylists to present their latest looks and ideas and pass these on to other stylists. Needless to say, we returned feeling tired but inspired, ambitious and armed with new and exciting products!

Whilst there we met up with the Paul Mitchell team, who were promoting their new Awapuhi Wild Ginger range of haircare. Not only does their new range smell delicious, but it combines the moisture-rich juice of the Awapuhi Ginger plant (a Hawaiian staple in the Paul Mitchell hair care range) with the KeraTriplex formula, a protein almost identical to human keratin (which is what our hair is made from) found in pure sheep wool from New Zealand.  With this combination, Paul Mitchell have created a system that reduces breakage by 80%, improves shine by 35% and prevents colour fade by 67% – which is quite amazing! We also came back with a pair of brand new, gold plated GHD stylers. The GHD stand beckoned us from afar, with it’s gold and black, it’s huge chandelier, not to mention the most amazing wallpaper throughout… It was incredible, and right down our street – Vintage, Gold, with tonnes of framed pictures of the GHD Stylist’s amazing work. Needless to say, we were in hair heaven.

On the many stages we also got to see some of the worlds top stylists showcasing their newest looks and ideas for upcoming hair trends, which included some amazing hair up techniques – from using staples instead of grips to building hair out of a steel cage, we saw it all, and can’t wait to put our own twist on all the amazing styles and techniques we learnt about. Not only did we learn about Hair Up techniques but some of the incredible barbers from clipper brand “Wahl” showed us some surprisingly elegant, feminine and edgy cuts – using clippers instead of scissors. Sounds mental, we know, but it creates a flattering, soft, feathery finish that can be time consuming with scissors. From sleek bobs with gorgeous choppy layers, to edgy designer crops, Wahl had it covered – and that’s not even starting on shaving a London skyline into someone’s hair…

This week we recieved our tickets to Salon International! For those who don’t know, Salon International is a huge gathering and meeting of hair stylists, hair companies, beauty companies and has platform shows with some of the most successful hair-stylists in the world! So pretty much like Christmas for all at Kelly Anza Hair Design!

Hopefully our trip up to London won’t be too traumatic for us little country girls!

Here at Kelly Anza Hair Design, we like to stay one solid step infront of the pack, which is why when looking at the predicted hair trends for this Autumn/Winter, which is why this winter we’ve decided to take our inspiration from the recent Spring/Summer catwalk shows – and they did not disappoint. From Mulberry to Topshop, the runways were full of glamourous, sexy styles, from the well loved Candyfloss hair to Florence Welch inspired colour, and we love it.

The Wash House Experience is a chance to relax and unwind in our new second floor salon, away from the hustle and bustle of the main floor. Here one of our team will talk the service through with you, discuss your hair’s needs, and have a chance to settle on the kind of products to be used.

The service begins with a colour friendly cleansing treatment which will remove any product  or oils from the hair. We will then use the hair care range that we discussed at the beginning to provide you with a relaxing shampoo head and neck massage. This weekend, Kelly and Lilly, our two top stylists, travelled upto Bristol to take part in a colour course held by Paul Mitchell. The course took place on monday morning, so after a good nights rest in a Bristol hotel,  they went to discover some new techniques that they could not only pass onto the other stylists, but to you, to give your hair the stylish colour you deserve.

The technique they learnt about is called ‘Block Colouring’ – and no, it won’t give you hair to resemble a lego man. It’s all about faster ways to acheive multi tonal colour than highlighting, which will mean less time sitting around, and a personal, more fun result for you. Block colouring can be used to acheive more natural all over colour – for example, if you are blonde and are considering going dark, we could use a few different shades so your brown will look more alive and not as flat as an all over colour can. Or if you really want a drastic change, block colouring can be used to throw a few colours together, like various shades of copper and orange, or tones of red and purple, for a bright, exciting effect. The colours and ways in which we use block colouring can change your hair’s style without a cut – it is all designed with your needs in mind. Tie your hair up alot? We can add in some peek-a-boo blonde to peep out of your pony tail. Blunt fringe and tonnes of attitude? Block colouring can allow us to give your fringe the outspoken style it deserves with a chunk of rebellious red.
